  12. In February I got hold of Roger Gammans' extremely useful lpr client. lpr is
  13. a command line utility that allows the user to send jobs to remote printers.
  14. To make it a little easier to use, I have written this simple desktop
  15. frontend for it.

  17. It's a bit of a rushed application, and certainly could do with some
  18. refinement, especially on the error-reporting side, but it seems stable
  19. enough for use at the moment.

  23. To use !LPR, double click on its icon and it will install itself on the
  24. iconbar. Clicking select on its icon opens the configuration window.
  25.  
  26. The configuration window allows you to set the remote host where print jobs
  27. are queued, and the remote printer name. When first opened, there will be no
  28. known hosts or printers, so you will need to enter these details into the
  29. writable fields. Once you have clicked select on the 'OK' button, the
  30. information you have entered will be added to the list and will be available
  31. next time you start !LPR. The currently selected host and printer will also
  32. be preserved as the defaults for the next session.

  34. To print a file on the remote host, simply drag its icon onto the iconbar
  35. icon. The icon will indicate that it is busy while the file is sent, but the
  36. app multitasks while doing this. If the job is taking a long time, there could
  37. be a problem, so you can hit the 'Halt' button to cancel the job. This can 
  38. occur if the printer selected doesn't exist on the host you are trying to print
  39. to.

  41. ...and that's about it! Fortunately Roger has done all the hard work in
  42. getting us a usable lpr client for which thanks are due.

  53. To date, I have only tested LPR with postscript (mono and colour) and plain
  54. text files files to three of our remote printers, and have encountered no
  55. problems. It has been tested with RISC OS 3.1, 3.60 and 3.70 (with a StrongARM).
