  2.                   Caller Display from Octopus Systems

  5. Caller Display allows you to see the name and number of the person calling
  6. you before you answer the telephone. A small Caller ID unit connects to
  7. the serial port of an Acorn computer (or a PC) and the Octopus Systems
  8. software displays the  call details in a window just before the telephone
  9. rings. Without the Caller ID hardware you can still try the other functions
  10. of the software.

  12. The icon bar menu controls most functions:
  13.  
  14.   Choices      Used to set the serial port and Area code options
  15.   Area code    Finds an area code for a place or a place from an area code
  16.  
  17.   Show calls   Lists incoming calls received 
  18.                (also shown if you SELECT click over the icon)
  19.   Find call    Finds all calls from a particular person or number
  20.   Last call    Shows details of the last call and lets you step through 
  21.                new calls
  22.  
  23.   Directory    Shows the user database of names and numbers
  24.                (also shown if you ADJUST click over the icon)
  25.   Find Name    Finds the number of a person in the database
  26.                (or finds the name of a person from a number)
  27.   Add number   Adds a new name/number to the user databse
  28.   
  29.   Quit         Quits the CallerID program, updates the directory and frees
  30.                the serial port for other software.
  31.   
  32. When a call is received the software looks for numbers in a user database
  33. and if found it displays the name of the caller as well as the number. The
  34. database can easily be extended and it is possible to make files or
  35. directories open automatically when a particular person calls. This can be
  36. used for storing notes of telephone conversations as well as addresses,
  37. membership numbers or other details.

  39. Telephone numbers can be dialled by clicking on the DIAL button in the Edit
  40. window, or by double clicking ADJUST over an entry in the Calls or Directory
  41. window. If a number is engaged dial 5 and the exchange will call you back
  42. when the number becomes free. When the line becomes free the Caller Display
  43. System will show the name of the person you were trying to call and lifting
  44. the receiver will dial their number.

  46. The software can be linked into database or accounts applications (including
  47. Datapower 3 and Prophet 2) so the caller's records can be displayed. The
  48. software can also link to other applications and a simple utility is
  49. provided to mute the CDROM audio when a call is received.

  51. Calls are logged in a database on disc and you can see at a glance how many
  52. new calls have been received if you have been away from the phone.

  54. The Caller Display software also includes a database of area codes, so
  55. even if you don't know the caller’s name you can click on the Area button
  56. to display the area code. Where possible it will display the district as
  57. well as the main area. For example, '0181 864 1234' would display 'London
  58. (outer), South Harrow'.

  60. The unit is BABT approved and has a REN of 0. It will work with any modern
  61. Acorn computer (but not the A300 or A400 series) and is available now
  62. from Octopus Systems for £99 inc VAT.  BT users will also need to pay
  63. £4 per quarter for the Caller Display service.

  69. Using this Demo
  70. ---------------
  71. Although this program is just a demonstration of the full system it
  72. is still useful in its own right as it may be used for dialling numbers
  73. from a directory, searching for names or numbers, or even looking up
  74. area codes and displaying locations on the UK map.

  76. If you enable the map facility in the Choices, you can use the Area
  77. Codes menu item to find an area code or a place name, and the place will
  78. be marked on the map (except for small places which don't yet have
  79. co-ordinates entered into the database).

  81. The full version is supplied with the Caller Display hardware which connects
  82. to the telephone line to enable the software to display details of incoming
  83. calls.

  94. The Atomwide serial port card is only needed if you have an A300 or A400, or
  95. if your serial port is already in use.  Speak or Speech software is needed
  96. to speak the callers’s name.  All prices include the Caller Display unit,
  97. software, manual, telephone splitter and VAT, but please add £4.70 for
  98. p&p.
