Caller Display from Octopus Systems
Caller Display allows you to see the name and number of the person calling
you before you answer the telephone. A small Caller ID unit connects to
the serial port of an Acorn computer (or a PC) and the Octopus Systems
software displays the call details in a window just before the telephone
rings. Without the Caller ID hardware you can still try the other functions
of the software.
The icon bar menu controls most functions:
Choices Used to set the serial port and Area code options
Area code Finds an area code for a place or a place from an area code
Show calls Lists incoming calls received
(also shown if you SELECT click over the icon)
Find call Finds all calls from a particular person or number
Last call Shows details of the last call and lets you step through
new calls
Directory Shows the user database of names and numbers
(also shown if you ADJUST click over the icon)
Find Name Finds the number of a person in the database
(or finds the name of a person from a number)
Add number Adds a new name/number to the user databse
Quit Quits the CallerID program, updates the directory and frees
the serial port for other software.
When a call is received the software looks for numbers in a user database
and if found it displays the name of the caller as well as the number. The
database can easily be extended and it is possible to make files or
directories open automatically when a particular person calls. This can be
used for storing notes of telephone conversations as well as addresses,
membership numbers or other details.
Telephone numbers can be dialled by clicking on the DIAL button in the Edit
window, or by double clicking ADJUST over an entry in the Calls or Directory
window. If a number is engaged dial 5 and the exchange will call you back
when the number becomes free. When the line becomes free the Caller Display
System will show the name of the person you were trying to call and lifting
the receiver will dial their number.
The software can be linked into database or accounts applications (including
Datapower 3 and Prophet 2) so the caller's records can be displayed. The
software can also link to other applications and a simple utility is
provided to mute the CDROM audio when a call is received.
Calls are logged in a database on disc and you can see at a glance how many
new calls have been received if you have been away from the phone.
The Caller Display software also includes a database of area codes, so
even if you don't know the caller’s name you can click on the Area button
to display the area code. Where possible it will display the district as
well as the main area. For example, '0181 864 1234' would display 'London
(outer), South Harrow'.
The unit is BABT approved and has a REN of 0. It will work with any modern
Acorn computer (but not the A300 or A400 series) and is available now
from Octopus Systems for £99 inc VAT. BT users will also need to pay
£4 per quarter for the Caller Display service.
For more help use the Acorn Help program (or David Pilling's excellent
Balloon help) and point at a window, button or menu item. You can also
find sales and support information on our WWW site (below).
Using this Demo
---------------
Although this program is just a demonstration of the full system it
is still useful in its own right as it may be used for dialling numbers
from a directory, searching for names or numbers, or even looking up
area codes and displaying locations on the UK map.
If you enable the map facility in the Choices, you can use the Area
Codes menu item to find an area code or a place name, and the place will
be marked on the map (except for small places which don't yet have
co-ordinates entered into the database).
The full version is supplied with the Caller Display hardware which connects
to the telephone line to enable the software to display details of incoming
calls.
