****Dark Legions Alpha Demo Notes****
Developed by Silicon Knights
Published by Strategic Simulations, Inc.
Thank you for taking a closer look at Dark Legions! This Alpha version is
intended to give you an idea of how the final game will play. In order to
keep the size down to 1 disk, sound is not available, and only 4 selections
are possible out of the 29 that will be available in the final version.
The game is currently at an Alpha state and is known to contain bugs.
These circumstance may result in some hardware incompatibilities and game
crashes. One problem that we are aware of is a crash that occurs from the
overhead strategy view after battles. If your machine crashes, initiate
battles from the perspective strategy view and the problem will be avoided.
Rest assured that this will be fixed at the time of release.
To Play:
Type "dl". You must have 4 MB of ram. On a clean system you can run a 256K
smartdrv. Make sure smartdrv is not over 256k on 4 MB machines or you may
recieve an error message. If you have a joystick, make sure it is plugged
into the port and the port is active. The game can be played with two
joysticks for head to head competition. To play via modem or direct connect
link, pick one machine as the master and the other machine as the slave.
Select link on both machines. Set the preferred settings for the connections.
Dial. One player will have to wait while the other player selects pieces.
Select Characters/Traps:
Do not use the disk icons or eye icons at this stage - they are not fully
functional. Use the arrows to choose the various characters or a trap. Costs
are shown in the pictures. Pick a strategy that works for you. In Dark
Legions, there is no set strategy that can guarantee victory. Wizards are
very powerful in the strategy section and weaker in combat, while trolls are
very strong in the combat section and slow in the strategy section. The
Berserkers are cheap, well-rounded characters with no strategic specials.
Void traps are extremely powerful, remaining on the board no matter how many
victims they kill.
Setup:
Traps can only be placed in your zone or the neutral center zone. Characters
must be placed in your zone. Select 1 character as your Orb Holder by
clicking with the left mouse button on the tiny sphere in the upper right
corner, then selecting the character (see below). You cannot exit from the
setup screen until the setup is complete.
Winning:
To win, you must kill your opponent's orb holder.
Playing the game:
Use the Left mouse button to select characters by clicking on their feet
(only). To use magic, click on the right mouse button until the cursor
becomes a lightning bolt. Select a wizard -- they are the only characters that
can use magic in the demo. If characters are within 6 units of the wizard
and no closer than 3 units they will be highlighted as targets. Select a
target and the wizard will fire an ice ball. Repeated hits can kill.
Menu:
Click on either gargoyle to see the options menu. You can perform all of the
main actions from here (not all are implemented). To change to an overhead
view select the icon with the squares. Choose view character option by
selecting the icon with the magnifying glass. Choose magic by clicking on
the lightning bolt. To leave the game click on the button with the doors.
