Before the World Wide Web came along, FTP was the premier method of downloading large files such as programs from the internet. FTP allows you to connect onto the internet, browse through the folders on its hard disc and copy files found there onto your own hard disc. Not nearly as easy to use as the Web, but useful all the same.
