  46. To run Internet Explorer 5.0, your system must meet the following 
  47. minimum requirements:
  48.  
  49. - A 486 with a 66 MHz processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  50.  
  51. - For Microsoft Windows 95:
  52.   12 MB of RAM minimum
  53.  
  54.   For Microsoft Windows NT:
  55.   16 MB of RAM minimum
  56.  
  57. - For Microsoft Windows NT: 
  58.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)
  59.  
  60. - 45 to 70 MB of hard-disk space (depending on installation type) 
  61.  
  62. - Mouse
  63.  
  64. - Modem
  65.  
  66. - CD-ROM (if installation is done from a CD-ROM)

  69. SETUP

  72. Installing Internet Explorer 5.0
  73. --------------------------------
  74. Whether you choose to install over the network or to download the 
  75. installation files to your hard disk, the Setup files are copied to 
  76. your hard disk. This is so you can reinstall more quickly if you need 
  77. to. If you want to reclaim the disk space, you can remove the Setup 
  78. directory by double-clicking the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control 
  79. Panel and then clicking Internet Explorer 5.0 Setup Files.
  80.  
  81. You cannot install Internet Explorer 5.0 to or run it from a 
  82. network drive. However, you can download it to a network drive. 
  83. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  84. your computer. You cannot download Internet Explorer 5.0 to a 
  85. UNC path.

  88. Running Internet Explorer 5.0 on Windows NT
  89. -------------------------------------------
  90. NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install and 
  91. uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes having 
  92. administrative privileges the first time you start your computer 
  93. after installing or uninstalling.
  94.  
  95. You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 
  96. 5.0. This is also true for some add-on components.
  97.  
  98. If you're running Internet Explorer 5.0 on Windows NT, you must 
  99. set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary Internet 
  100. Files folder (cache). The user must have write permission in order 
  101. for files to be stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  102.  
  103. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) after 
  104. you install Internet Explorer 5.0; you must specify when prompted 
  105. that you do not want it to overwrite any files that are newer. 
  106. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the following steps to update 
  107. the registry:
  108.  
  109. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  110. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dll
  111. 3. Click OK.

  114. Running Internet Explorer 5.0 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  115. -------------------------------------------------------------
  116. If you dual boot between two operating systems that are configured
  117. to share a Program Files folder, and you uninstall an add-on
  118. component from one of your Internet Explorer 5.0 installations,
  119. it will be removed from both of them. This is because the add-on
  120. files are stored in the Program Files folder.

  123. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.0
  124. ----------------------------------
  125. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 5.0 by carrying out the 
  126. following steps:
  127.  
  128. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  129. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  130. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.

  133. Adding or Removing the Windows Desktop Update
  134. ---------------------------------------------
  135. The Active Desktop is not available for users who install Internet
  136. Explorer 5.0 on a system that does not already have Internet Explorer
  137. 4.0 with the Windows Desktop Update (Active Desktop) installed. If you
  138. want to use the Windows Desktop Update, it must be installed prior to
  139. installing Internet Explorer 5.0. This can be done by installing Internet
  140. Explorer 4.0 and then installing Internet Explorer 5.0.
  141.  
  142. If you are experiencing difficulties with the Windows Desktop Update,
  143. you can restore Internet Explorer 4.0 by using Add/Remove Programs in
  144. Control Panel. Click Internet Explorer 5.0, click Add/Remove, and then
  145. follow the instructions on the screen.
  146.  
  147. Once Internet Explorer 4.0 is restored, you can remove the Windows Desktop
  148. Update by clicking the Start Menu and then clicking Run.  Then type: 
  149.     Rundll32.exe, setupwbv.dll, IE4Maintenance
  150. You will then see an option to remove the Windows Desktop Update.

  153. KNOWN ISSUES
  154. ============
  155.  
  156. Customized Proxy Settings Per Connection 
  157. ----------------------------------------
  158. Internet Explorer 5.0 provides added functionality enabling users to
  159. configure proxy settings for each dial-up connection. When upgrading
  160. Internet Explorer with the previous proxy setting enabled; Internet
  161. Explorer 5.0 applies that setting to all existing dial-up connections.
  162. This causes your existing dial-up connection to stop working properly
  163. if that connection did not require a proxy server. 
  164.  
  165. To fix this, click the View menu in the browser, and then click Internet
  166. Options. On the Connection tab, click the dial-up connection in the list
  167. of available connections. Click the Settings button, and clear the Use A
  168. Proxy Server check box.

  170.  
  171. New FTP User Interface and Functionality
  172. ----------------------------------------
  173. Internet Explorer has an improved FTP user interface when direct access
  174. to an FTP server is available. This feature allows file upload,
  175. drag-and-drop support, file deleting, and the downloading of several
  176. directories. If you discover an issue in the new FTP user interface that
  177. blocks FTP functionality, the feature can be disabled by typing:
  178.     regsvr32.exe /u msieftp.dll
  179. in a command window while in the directory C:\Windows\System
  180. (or C:\Winnt\System32 on Windows NT systems).
  181.  
  182. The FTP feature is new and has the following outstanding
  183. issues in this release:
  184.  
  185. 1. Progress dialog boxes are not finished for all operations.
  186. 2. The Web View HTML is not enabled.
  187. 3. The Login As dialog box does not work. Include username and password in
  188.    the URL for now (for example, ftp://user:password@ftp.server.com/dir/).
  189. 4. In some cases an empty browser will be displayed during the downloading
  190.    of a file if the file was double-clicked.
  191.  
  192. If you are unable to see the new FTP user interface, you are probably being
  193. blocked by a CERN type proxy server. You can verify this by trying to connect
  194. to the server by using FTP.exe. You can work around this issue by using a
  195. non-CERN type proxy server, such as Microsoft Remote WinSock.

  198. Outlook Express Auto Select Feature
  199. -----------------------------------
  200. The Auto Select feature, accessed via the Language command on the View menu,
  201. requires that the corresponding language support files are installed on the
  202. system. The language support files can be obtained from the Internet Explorer
  203. 5.0 Add-On Components page.
  204.  
  205.  
  206. Menu Sound Events May Not Play
  207. ------------------------------
  208. The Menu Popup and Menu Command sound events may not play when you navigate
  209. the Start menu or Favorites menu, if the Internet Explorer 5.0 Developer
  210. Preview is installed over the Windows Desktop Update included with Internet
  211. Explorer 4.0.

  214. Printing HMTL Tables from Web Pages
  215. -----------------------------------
  216. Tables that do not explicitly declare <TR> and <TD> tags according to current
  217. HTML specifications may not print correctly.
  218.

  220. Using FTP Sites via an Online Service Dial-up Connection
  221. --------------------------------------------------------
  222. Web sites that use FTP protocols cannot be accessed or viewed properly
  223. through any online service using dial-up connection. Some FTP sites may
  224. display a directory tree that cannot be opened, or the FTP sites may not
  225. display as expected. Files cannot be downloaded from a Web site.  FTP sites
  226. have also been observed causing the computer to stop responding when they
  227. have been accessed through America Online (AOL).

  230. Active X Controls when Using America Online, CompuServe, or MSN
  231. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  232. Web sites that contain Active X controls might not work properly if you use
  233. America Online (AOL), CompuServe, or The Microsoft Network (MSN). Some controls
  234. may not be able to be downloaded, and when you are specifically using AOL some 
  235. Active X controls may cause the computer to stop responding.

  238. Undo Command Does Not Work for Data <input> Fields
  239. --------------------------------------------------
  240. The Undo command for data <input> fields is not working in this release. 
  241. This will affect your ability to "undo" typed entries if any data
  242. <input> fields are used.

  244.  
  245. Tab Order for Certain Controls in HTML Forms 
  246. --------------------------------------------- 
  247. Tab order for certain INPUT controls (RADIO and BUTTON) are not functioning
  248. correctly in this release. Presing TAB to move to another control causes the 
  249. focus to be sent to menu bands instead of to the next control in the tab order.

  252. APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  253. =========================

  255. Internet Information Server After Installation
  256. ----------------------------------------------
  257. For systems with Internet Information Server, there may be problems with
  258. the server operation on the first restart that is part of installation process
  259. for Internet Explorer 5.0. To resolve this issue, restart the computer after
  260. the installation of Internet Explorer is complete.

  263. Outlook Express Address Book Digital ID with Outlook 98 Installation
  264. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  265. If Outlook 98 and Outlook Express are installed, the address book is shared.
  266. For this release, you are unable to add a digital signature to shared address
  267. book entries. To work around this, open the Address Book, click the Tools
  268. menu, and then click Options. Click Do Not Share. This removes the shared
  269. address book and allows the addition of a digital signature to all address
  270. book entries.

  273. Traditional Chinese Windows 95 (Gold) Users
  274. ------------------------------------------- 
  275. There is a known issue when installing the Internet Explorer 5.0 Japanese Language
  276. Pack and IME on Traditional Chinese Windows 95 systems.  Before installing the 
  277. Japanese language support, first install the GDI patch from:

  281. Visual Interdev 6.0 or Visual J++ 6.0 Beta Releases
  282. ---------------------------------------------------
  283. Internet Explorer 5.0 Developer Preview should not be used on the same computer
  284. as beta versions of Visual InterDev 6.0 (March Pre-Release) or Visual J++ 6.0
  285. (Technology Preview 1) or should be used with extreme caution. After upgrading
  286. to Internet Explorer 5.0 Developer Preview, if you open HTML documents or active
  287. server pages in Visual Interdev 6.0 or Visual J++ 6.0, any HTML markup past
  288. approximately the 4,000th byte in the .html or .asp file will be truncated. The page 
  289. will not appear correctly in the preview and editing panes. If you save the page, 
  290. your data will be lost.  Updating to Visual Interdev 6.0 or Visual J++ 6.0 released 
  291. versions will remove this problem. We apologize for this incovenience. For updates,
