Charming Chaos v0.1
╜1998 Electronic Cow Freeware
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This program is completely free and unrestricted and it may be
freely copied for all to use, as long as it remains in tact,
unaltered, and no-one benefits financially from its distribution!
By all means, include it on your cover-mount disk/CD-ROM, FTP/WWW
site or public domain library, but don't expect Electronic Cow to
be responsible in any way for any loss or damage to your system
as a direct or indirect use of this program. But hey, it works!
The moral is don't tamper with it, else it won't. Besides, you
wouldn't like us to visit your home, and ruin your work, so don't
do it to ours please :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Charming Chaos is a two-part random(ish) music generator, and it
should work on any Atari in 640 x 400 with at least 512k RAM.
You'll also need a MIDI synth or module plugged into the MIDI out
of the Atari, and the in of the instrument, else you'll hear
nothing!
Some simple instructions
------------------------
There are two tracks in Charming Chaos labelled A and B. Each
track has controls to set the MIDI channel (though both can share
the same channel also), patch number, and dials to control pan
and volume (as per the standard controller messages: 0x07 for
volume, and 0x0a for panning). Your synth might not actually
respond to any of these controllers, and that isn't the
software's fault. On the other hand, you may be able to program
your synth to respond differently to these controller messages,
so you can change the filter or something equally mad. The LED is
for auto-pan. When this is lit (press it to toggle the state),
the track is randomly panned.
Each track has four buttons labelled A to D. When none of these
are pressed, Charming Chaos makes no noises. This is because
these are the random seeds (each of them are slightly different,
but are all sort-of in key, hence the name 'Charming' chaos). Any
number of algorithms can be active simultaneously; the greater
the number of active seeds then then greater likelihood that
notes will overlap and cause chords or clusters.
And that's it! It's really simple to use, but the music it
creates can be really cool. Electronic Cow are currently workring
on some more algorithmic music composition tools, and should have
a fully working commercial title available by the end of 1998
(replete with MIDI file export, load/save, editable algorithms,
MIDI clock, loads of tracks, that sort of thing). Please do
contact us if you like the sound of that program (it'll inspire
us to write it faster!)...
