  8. This document contains important information regarding the
  9. installation and operation of Unite CD-Maker.  It is 
  10. recommended that this entire document be read prior to 
  11. installing this software.

  24. What is Unite CD-Maker?
  25. ---------------------
  26. Cirrus Technology's Unite CD-Maker software is a complete software
  27. package for creating your own custom audio CDs and CD-ROMs (data
  28. CDs).  It was developed using IBM's state-of-the-art System Object
  29. Model (SOM), Workplace Shell, and OpenClass technology.  CD-recordable
  30. discs can hold in excess of 650 MB of data or 74 minutes of music
  31. and are readable by virtually any DOS, Windows, OS/2, or UNIX system
  32. with a CD-ROM drive.  With Unite CD-Maker, you can simply and easily
  33. create custom audio CDs by combining songs from several CDs onto
  34. one CD.  You can create CD-ROMs for backup, archiving, and distribution
  35. of personal computer data.
  36.  
  37. Even if you don't have a CD-recordable device, Unite CD-Maker lets
  38. you simulate the burn process by using its enhanced CD Burner icon!
  39. Install this demonstration version of Unite CD-Maker today, and find
  40. out more about this exciting, new technology!
  41.  
  42. Installation Requirements 
  43. --------------------
  44. In order to run the UNITE INSTALL program, your system must meet the 
  45. following criteria:
  46.  
  47. DISK DRIVE.  There must be at least 3 megabytes of available disk 
  48. space on the hard disk on which Unite CD-Maker will be installed.
  49.  
  50. OPERATING SYSTEM.  IBM OS/2 WARP Version 3.0 or greater must be 
  51. installed and running on your PC.
  52.  
  53. OS/2 CD-ROM SUPPORT.  If your PC does not have OS/2
  54. CD-ROM support installed, use OS/2's selective install procedure to
  55. install CD-ROM support.  Refer to your OS/2 documentation for more
  56. information.  After OS/2's CD-ROM support is installed, Unite CD-Maker
  57. can be installed.

  59. Installation Procedures
  60. -------------------
  61. The INSTALL program will create all necessary directories and update 
  62. CONFIG.SYS as noted below.  
  63.  
  64. Follow the steps below to initially run the INSTALL program; 
  65.  
  66. 1) Invoke an OS/2 FULL SCREEN session.
  67.  
  68. 2) UNZIP the file CDMAKER.ZIP into a temporary directory, and
  69.    Set your current default directory to this temporary directory.
  70.  
  71.     i.e., PKUNZIP2 CDMAKER.ZIP
  72.  
  73. 3) Type INSTALL and press the ENTER key.
  74.  
  75. 4) The first install window displays the CDMAKER.TXT file.  Review its
  76.    contents and click on the Continue pushbutton.
  77.  
  78. 5) Select Update CONFIG.SYS from the second install window.  If this
  79.    option is not selected, CONFIG.SYS must be manually updated.
  80.  
  81. 6) If this is an initial install, the second selection option, Overwrite
  82.    files, may be left unchecked.  If you are reinstalling the software, 
  83.    check the Overwrite files option.
  84.  
  85. 7) Click on the OK pushbutton.
  86.  
  87. 8) Select the "Unite CD-Maker" as the component you wish to install.
  88.  
  89. 9) Before selecting to continue the install, review the install directory
  90.    provided on the lower portion of the Install - directories window.  
  91.    This is the directory into which the software will be installed.
  92.    As shown, the default drive is "C", the default directory is "UNITE".
  93.  
  94. 10) After reviewing and modifying, if required, the directory path;
  95.      select the Install... pushbutton to continue the installation.
  96.  
  97. 11) You are informed when the installation has completed.
  98.  
  99. 12) Reboot your PC immediately after installation.
  100.  
  101. NOTE:  The files in the temporary directory (see Step #2) can be
  102. deleted after successful installation of Unite CD-Maker.
  103.  
  104. How to update your CONFIG.SYS if you didn't select the 
  105. "Update CONFIG.SYS" option during installation                                
  106. ---------------------------------------------
  107. If you didn't select the Update CONFIG.SYS option during installation, 
  108. you need to manually update your CONFIG.SYS file.  Follow the 
  109. instructions below to manually update your CONFIG.SYS file.
  110.  
  111. NOTE:  The examples below reflect the default installation drive 
  112. and directory (C:\UNITE).
  113.  
  114. 1) LIBPATH must be modified as follows:
  115.  
  116.    The location of the Unite CD-Maker libraries must be added
  117.    as the FIRST entry of the LIBPATH statement as follows:
  118.  
  119.    i.e., LIBPATH=C:\UNITE\LIB;
  120.  
  121.    The location into which the SOM libraries are installed must
  122.    be added immediately after the above LIBPATH entry.
  123.  
  124.    i.e., LIBPATH=C:\UNITE\LIB;C:\UNITE\SOM30;....
  125.  
  126. 2) PATH must be modified as follows:
  127.  
  128.    The location of the Unite CD-Maker executables must be added
  129.    as the FIRST entry for the PATH.
  130.  
  131.    i.e., SET PATH=C:\UNITE\BIN;
  132.  
  133. 3) The following line must be at the END of the CONFIG.SYS file:
  134.  
  135.    i.e., SET CIRCFGPATH=C:\UNITE
  136.  
  137. 4) All device drivers provided by Cirrus Technology are installed into the
  138.    C:\UNITE\BIN directory.  The CONFIG.SYS must be modified as follows
  139.    to load the device drivers during boot:
  140.  
  141.    i.e., BASEDEV=CTCDRFLT.FLT
  142.         REM the driver below replaces OS2CDROM.DMD /Q
  143.         DEVICE=C:\UNITE\BIN\CTCDROM.DMD /Q
  144.  
  145. 5) After these modifications are made to your CONFIG.SYS file, reboot 
  146.    your PC prior to using the software.

  166. 1)  Fully supported under OS/2 Warp V4.0 (code name Merlin).  The
  167.     online documentation and manual have been modified to the
  168.     Merlin look and feel!  Operationally, Unite CD-Maker works the
  169.     same as under OS/2 Warp V3.0.

  171. 2)  Support for the TEAC CDR-50S CD-recordable device.
  172.  
  173. 3)  Support for the Creative CDR-2000 CD-recordable device.
  174.  
  175. 4)  Support for the Ricoh RS-1420C CD-recordable device.

  177. 5)  Support for the Sony CDU-924S CD-recordable device.

  179. 6)  Support for the Smart & Friendly CD-R 2004 CD-recordable
  180.     device.

  182. 7)  Multisession support for most CD-R drives.  Previously, unless
  183.     you had a Sony CD-R device, the only session that was accessible
  184.     from a CD-ROM/XA multisession disc was the first.  Now, Unite
  185.     CD-Maker gives you the ability to select any session on a
  186.     CD-ROM/XA multisession disc to be recognized as the primary
  187.     CD-ROM volume in the drive.
  188.  
  189. 8)  The Unite CD-Maker documentation is now available on-line!  The
  190.     installation of Unite CD-Maker places an icon titled "Help" in
  191.     your Unite CD-Maker desktop folder.  Use it to access Unite
  192.     CD-Maker's on-line documentation.
  193.  
  194. 9)  If you do not have a CD-recordable device attached to your PC,
  195.     you can now simulate the burn process using the enhanced CD
  196.     Burner icon.  The CD Burner icon has been enhanced to simulate 
  197.     the burn process even though you might not have a CD-recordable 
  198.     device attached to your PC.
  199.  
  200. Facts
  201. -----
  202. 1.  The HP 4020i CD-recorder is commonly bundled with an ADVANSYS SCSI
  203.     host adapter (ADVANSYS APB-510).  This adapter is not distributed
  204.     with a driver for OS/2.  If you plan to use this adapter to control
  205.     your HP 4020i, you will need to manually install the driver as
  206.     follows:
  207.  
  208.        a)  Copy the file ASC.ADD from the \UNITE\BIN directory to the
  209.            \OS2\BOOT directory.
  210.  
  211.        b)  Edit the CONFIG.SYS file, and add the entry:
  212.            BASEDEV=ASC.ADD.
  213.  
  214.        c)  Reboot your PC.
  215.  
  216. 2.  Unite CD-Maker is multi-threaded software.  Setting
  217.     "PRIORITY=ABSOLUTE" in the CONFIG.SYS file forces all priority
  218.     to a single thread.  Unite CD-Maker will NOT operate in this
  219.     environment.  If a priority statement exists in the CONFIG.SYS, it
  220.     MUST be set to "DYNAMIC".
  221.  
  222. 3.  Although many sound files for PCs have an extension of .WAV, not
  223.     all .WAV files are compatible with CD audio. Do not burn .WAV files
  224.     as audio tracks unless they are 16-bit stereo and have a
  225.     44.1KHz sampling rate. 8-bit .WAV files and files that are sampled
  226.     at a rate other than 44.1KHz will not play back properly when
  227.     burned to an audio CD, and playing them could damage stereo speakers.
  228.     All .WAV files created by Unite CD-Maker's "Copy to file" function
  229.     can be safely burned to an audio CD, but .WAV files from other
  230.     sources may not be 16-bit, 44.1KHz files.
  231.  
  232. 4.  Unite CD-Maker is a multi-threaded software.  Setting 
  233.     "PRIORITY=ABSOLUTE" in the CONFIG.SYS file forces all priority 
  234.     to a single thread.  Unite CD-Maker will NOT operate in this 
  235.     environment.  If a priority statement exists in the CONFIG.SYS, it 
  236.     MUST be set to "DYNAMIC".
  237.  
  238. 5.  The Philips, HP, and Yamaha CD-recorders do not reset themselves
  239.     after a "test" burn.  If a "test" burn is aborted, or fails, for any
  240.     reason, the disk must be ejected and re-inserted prior to continuing.
  241.  
  242. 6.  At the time of the release of version 2.1c, a firmware bug exists in the
  243.     HP 6020 and Philips 2600 recorders which can result in the failure to
  244.     copy a track to a file. The copy action will appear to complete successfully
  245.     and immediately, but the track is not actually copied. Ejecting the CD and
  246.     reinserting it should correct this problem.
  247.  
  248. Demonstration Version's Limitation
  249. -----------------------------
  250. This is a fully functional version of Unite CD-Maker created
  251. specifically to be installed with IBM OS/2 Warp 3.0 or greater.
  252. This demonstration version is restricted in that only a limited
  253. amount of data can be burned to a CD.  To upgrade this demonstration
  254. version of Unite CD-Maker, please call Cirrus Technology on
  255. (301) 698-1900.
  256.  
  257. This demonstration version of Unite CD-Maker is restricted in its 
  258. BURN capacity in two aspects.
  259.  
  260.   1)  Only 100 megabytes of DATA can be burned to a CD.
  261.  
  262.   2)  Only 11 minutes of AUDIO can be burned to a CD.
  263.  
  264. NOTE:  Burned disks which are kept open (allow future sessions)
  265. can be reused after upgrading to the commercial version
  266. of Unite CD-Maker.  For information and to upgrade Unite
