This is David Bilsby's Archimedes port of NetHack 3.1.3, with a small
front-end by Mike Williams.
For people who do not know what this is, it's a character based adventure
game in the D & D vein. NetHack originated on Unix systems years ago when
text terminals where common, not X terminals as today. However, NetHack has
moved on very much since then in size and complexity, but it still retains
the character graphics of its original incarnations.
Clicking SELECT on the icon bar icon, or choosing "Play" from the menu,
starts the game with the current option selection.
Clicking ADJUST on the icon bar icon, or choosing "Configure" from the menu,
allows the options to be set.
The options are:-
Your Name The name of your character
Dog's name The name of your pet dog
Cat's name The name of your pet cat
Fruit name The name of your favourite fruit
Pet type If neither of these options is selected, then one will be
chosen randomly. The pet type setting is ignored for wizards,
who always have a cat, and samurai, who always have a dog.
Automatic pickup Things get picked up automatically when you walk over them.
Pickup options Allows you to determine which items are automatically
picked up. Only works if "automatic pickup" is on.
Use colour Switch off for black & white
Don't attack friends
Gives a warning if you attempt to attach friendly creatures.
Extra Help Text Slightly increases the text displayed
Highlight your pet Your pet is made more visible
Display legacy info
Switch off if you don't want to see the legacy info when
you start a new character.
Your gender This is ignored for valkyrie, who are always female
Display news Switch off if you don't want to see NetHack news
Numeric keypad Use numeric pad for specifying directions
Space key = rest Normally the space key does nothing. With this option set,
the space key performs a rest command.
Show experience Display your experience points
Show score Display your score
No Beep Rig for silent running
Sort your posessions
Sort items in your pack by item type.
Highlight special text
Certain text fields are printed in bold
Display number of moves
Displays the current turn number
Display tombstone Displays a tombstone when you die
Verbose Slightly increases the displayed text
Automatic Cheat Normally, save files are deleted when your character
dies or quits. This option causes a backup copy of any
save files to be kept, and automatically recovers them
when necessary.
If you really want to start over, with the same
character name, you'll need to switch this option off.
SAVE Saves these options to disk.
Hints :
Details of how to play the game can be obtained by pressing "?" once the
game is in progress.
To get the most out of NetHack, it's a good idea to read the
"rec.games.roguelike.nethack" usenet newsgroup, where you will find lots of
hints, tips and pointers to FAQs and spoilers. Do remember, however, that
most NetHack players on other platforms will be using a more recent version.
