  1. This is David Bilsby's Archimedes port of NetHack 3.1.3, with a small
  2. front-end by Mike Williams.

  4. For people who do not know what this is, it's a character based adventure
  5. game in the D & D vein. NetHack originated on Unix systems years ago when
  6. text terminals where common, not X terminals as today. However, NetHack has
  7. moved on very much since then in size and complexity, but it still retains
  8. the character graphics of its original incarnations. 
  9.  
  10. Clicking SELECT on the icon bar icon, or choosing "Play" from the menu,
  11. starts the game with the current option selection.
  12.  
  13. Clicking ADJUST on the icon bar icon, or choosing "Configure" from the menu,
  14. allows the options to be set.
  15.  
  16. The options are:-
  17.  
  18.   Your Name          The name of your character
  19.  
  20.   Dog's name         The name of your pet dog
  21.  
  22.   Cat's name         The name of your pet cat
  23.  
  24.   Fruit name         The name of your favourite fruit
  25.  
  26.   Pet type           If neither of these options is selected, then one will be
  27.                      chosen randomly. The pet type setting is ignored for wizards,
  28.                      who always have a cat, and samurai, who always have a dog.
  29.  
  30.   Automatic pickup   Things get picked up automatically when you walk over them.
  31.  
  32.   Pickup options     Allows you to determine which items are automatically
  33.                      picked up. Only works if "automatic pickup" is on.
  34.  
  35.   Use colour         Switch off for black & white
  36.  
  37.   Don't attack friends
  38.                      Gives a warning if you attempt to attach friendly creatures.

  40.   Extra Help Text    Slightly increases the text displayed
  41.  
  42.   Highlight your pet Your pet is made more visible
  43.  
  44.   Display legacy info
  45.                      Switch off if you don't want to see the legacy info when
  46.                      you start a new character.
  47.  
  48.   Your gender        This is ignored for valkyrie, who are always female
  49.  
  50.   Display news       Switch off if you don't want to see NetHack news
  51.  
  52.   Numeric keypad     Use numeric pad for specifying directions
  53.  
  54.   Space key = rest   Normally the space key does nothing. With this option set,
  55.                      the space key performs a rest command.

  57.   Show experience    Display your experience points
  58.  
  59.   Show score         Display your score
  60.  
  61.   No Beep            Rig for silent running
  62.  
  63.   Sort your posessions 
  64.                      Sort items in your pack by item type.
  65.  
  66.   Highlight special text
  67.                      Certain text fields are printed in bold
  68.  
  69.   Display number of moves
  70.                      Displays the current turn number
  71.  
  72.   Display tombstone  Displays a tombstone when you die
  73.  
  74.   Verbose            Slightly increases the displayed text

  77.   Automatic Cheat    Normally, save files are deleted when your character
  78.                      dies or quits. This option causes a backup copy of any
  79.                      save files to be kept, and automatically recovers them
  80.                      when necessary.
  81.                      If you really want to start over, with the same
  82.                      character name, you'll need to switch this option off.

  85.   SAVE               Saves these options to disk.

  91. Details of how to play the game can be obtained by pressing "?" once the
  92. game is in progress.

  94. To get the most out of NetHack, it's a good idea to read the
  95. "rec.games.roguelike.nethack" usenet newsgroup, where you will find lots of
  96. hints, tips and pointers to FAQs and spoilers. Do remember, however, that
  97. most NetHack players on other platforms will be using a more recent version.
