- This file contains a list of major updates to the Unix Archive since the
- release of the SCO licenses on the 10th March 1998.
-
- Oct 17 2002
- -----------
-
- Applications/Ritter_Vi/README says:
- Gunnar Ritter has set up his own web site to track the developments of
- his port of the original vi to modern systems. You can find it at:
-
- Applications/Portable_CC/README says:
- Al Kossow sent in these versions of the portable C compiler for the
- 8086, Z8000, and 68000 done by MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science.
-
- Other/V6on286 contains a port of 6th Edition UNIX to the 80286 PC
- platform.
-
- The various 2.9BSD variants have now been collected into the
- directory PDP-11/Distributions/ucb/2.9-derivatives.
-
- Documentation/Papers/lions_PCCpass2_jun1979.pdf contains a paper
- written by John Lions about the second pass of the Portable
- C Compiler.

- -----------
-
- Caldera have released a BSD license for 1st to 7th Editions plus
- 32V. I have quickly removed all the password restrictions on
- ftp, http and rsync, and tried to rewrite the various docs which
- mentioned the SCO license and authorised access.
-
- Jun 27 2000
- -----------
-
- The archive has been renamed from the PUPS Archive to the
- Unix Archive, and has been rearranged into categories.
-
- May 26 2000
- -----------
-
- Tom Burnett has contributed a System 3 ported to a Z8000 platform
- (Plexis) in Other/Distributions/Plexis_Sys3.
-
- Alexey Chupahin has contributed a modified 7th Edition UNIX system
- which has had some Y2K bug fixes applied, in
- PDP-11/Bug_Fixes/7th_Edition_Y2K.
-
- Norman Wilson has contributed all or part of Ultrix-32M versions
- 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 in VAX//Distributions/dec/Ultrix-32M

-
- Tim Shoppa has found & recovered the tapes from the following Usenix
- conferences: 1983, 1987, 1988 and 1989. Their contents are now in
- Applications/Shoppa_Tapes in the archive.
-
- Dennis Ritchie has sent in two DECtape images, s1-bits and s2-bits.
- s2-bits dates from 1972, and contains several 1st Edition binaries and
- the binaries of an early C compiler. s1-bits is part of a disk image,
- but I've been able to recover some of its contents: some application
- source in both assembly and C. It seems to date from early 1973. Both
- tapes are in PDD-11/Distributions/research/1972_stuff in the archive.
-
- By using the C compiler binaries on s2-bits, I've been able to recompile
- the two primeval C compilers whose source is in
- Applications/Early_C_Compilers and which are described by Dennis on
- his web page at http://cm.bell-labs.com/who/dmr/primevalC.html
-
- Most recently, Dennis has also unearthed the on-line manual pages for
- 3rd and 4th Edition UNIX. They are in
- PDP-11/Distributions/research/Dennis_v3 and
- Distributions/research/Dennis_v3, respectively.
-
- Aug 3 1999
- -----------
-
- Ken Wellsch has contributed a partial vesion of 2.9BSD for the
- Pro 350/380 in PDP-11/Distributions/ucb/2.9bsd4pro350-kcwellsc.
-
- Tim Shoppa has donated the tapes distributed at the 1980 and 1981
- USENIX conferences in Applications/Shoppa_Tapes.
-
- Jan 27 1999
- -----------
-
- There have been several 4BSD additions:
-
- new versions from the Quasijarus project,
- a modified 4.3BSD from the Uni of Wisconsin, and
- a copy of 4.3BSD revision 2
-
- We now have an early version of the 3rd Edition kernel source, in C.
- There are some new tape manipulation tools. There is also a new
- version of the Apout PDP-11 usermode emulator.
-
- Nov 17 1998
- -----------
-
- 4BSD/Distributions now has boot tapes for 4.3-reno/Vax and
- 4.3-tahoe/CCI.
-
- Sep 27 1998
- -----------
-
- Now that Kirk McKusick has released the 4CD set of CSRG releases,
- people have been asking for boot tapes to actually install the
- 4BSD releases. I've augmented the PUPS Archive with the directory
- 4BSD/Distributions. Per Andersson has donated a set of 4.2BSD tape
- images, which are in the above directory. Steven Schultz has also
- sent in some notes explaining how to get 4.3BSD installed on a uVax.
-
- Sep 19 1998
- -----------
-
- A copy of the Software Tools (in C and Ratfor) has been donated by
- Debbie Scherrer, with the tape being read by Tim Shoppa. It is
- located in Applications/Software_Tools. The README says: This is the
- "Software Tools for Unix 4.1BSD" distribution tape.
-
- June 1998
- ---------
-
- Wilko Bulte sent in a copy of the Ultrix 3.1 installation tape.
-
- May 1 1998
- -----------
- A new version of Bob Supnik's PDP-11 emulator has been added.
- System III for the PDP-11 has been donated by Kirk McKusick.
-
- Apr 20 1998
- -----------
- A new version of the P11 PDP-11 emulator from Begemot has been added,
- as well as 2.10.1BSD from Steven Schultz. The first CDs can now be
- burned from the on-line PUPS Archive.
-
- Apr 15 1998
- -----------
- A full distribution of V7M, Release 2.1, has been donated by Jean
- Huens. This replaces the v7m.tar.gz tarball, which apparently was
- just the patches to get virgin V7 to V7M.
-
- The mythical `50 bugs' tape, described in Peter Salus' book `A Quarter
- Century of UNIX' has been found lurking in the PUPS Archive. You can
- find it in Applications/Spencer_Tapes/unsw3.tar.gz as the file
- usr/sys/v6unix/unix_changes.
