- INSTALL NOTES/MORE on FEATURES:
- ----------------------------
- COHERENT 4.0 The entire distribution consists of 6 floppy disks and
- installs in under 1 hour. (Possibly longer for most of us)
-
- COHERENT will run on machines with 1MB of RAM and 20MB hard disks. The
- more ram and disk you have, the better it runs.
-
- COHERENT 4.0 runs on most 386 and 486 ISA/EISA based IBM compatible
- computers. 8 bit SCSI from Future Domain and Seagate are supported, as
- are IDE, RLL, MFM, ESDI and Perstor hard disk controllers. 16 bit
- controllers such as the Adaptec 154X, DPT Smart Connex SCSI host adapter
- (WD emulation) and the DPT Smart Cache Plus EISA 16 bit bit (WD emulation).
-
- Future support will include the Always IN2000 and the Future Domain 16 bit
- SCSI host adapters.
-
- COHERENT 4.0 requires a minimum of 1 MB of RAM and will support systems with
- up to 16MB of RAM. It works with monochrome, CGA, EGA, and VGA/SVGA displays.
-
- COHERENT's kernel is around 100K.
-
- COHERENT 4.0's new features is a development system which produces System V
- Intel BCS compliant COFF binaries that run on many other compliant PC UNIX
- systems, such as The Santa Cruz Operation's (SCO) SCO UNIX System V/386
- Version 3.2.2, a licensee of AT&T's System V UNIX.
-
- COHERENT 4.0's development tools include an optimizing C compiler, a new
- optimizing linker, and versions of lex, yacc, awk, make as well as termcap,
- terminfo and curses.
-
- COHERENT 4.0 also comes with a new 386 macro-assembler. The assembler is
- fully documented and supports conditional assembly, listings, and assembly
- time variables.
-
- COHERENT 4.0 also contains versions of the traditional UNIX text processing
- utilities, nroff and troff, along with support for the LaserJet(PCL) and
- PostScript.
-
- COHERENT comes with UUCP, ckermit and kermit.
-
- COHERENT's administrative commands include several archiving utilities,
- a Bourne shell, a Korn shell, System V style cron, virtual console
- support, on-line manual pages and many of the popular Berkeley utilities.
-
- COHERENT 4.0 has built in support for multi-user cards made by ARNET Corp.,
- Chase Research, Inc., Comtrol Corp, Connect Tech, Inc., DigiBoard, GTEK, Inc.,
- Sea Level Systems, Specialix Corp., Sritek, Inc., and Stargate Technologies.
-

-
- COHERENT 4.2 Product Summary:
- -----------------------------
-
- The following summarizes the changes to COHERENT 4.2:
-
- * Improved support for third-party packages. The UNIX V editions of Lotus and
- WordPerfect now work out of the box.
-
- * Support for X Windows. An X Windows package is available from MWC.
-
- * A rewritten version of the kernel. The kernel now includes STREAMS.
-
- * Many new system calls, including support for the sigset() and sigaction()
- families of signal-handling system calls; and UNIX System-V interprocess
- comunications, including shared memory, semaphores, and messages queues.
-
- * Tools for configuring and rebuilding the kernel. With release 4.2, you can
- change kernel variables, add or delete drivers, and modify driver variables,
- then build a new bootable kernel. Dropping a new driver into the kernel -
- whether from MWC or from a third-party source - is now very easy.
-
- * Support for peripheral devices has been expanded. Devices support now
- include SCSI tape and a variety of SCSI devices. A floppy tape driver is
- being written, and will be ready soon after release, at no extra cost.
- The console has been rewritten to be more robust and to conform more closely
- to accepted UNIX standards. The keyboard driver has been expanded and now
- supports more languages, including Greek.
-
- * An improved compiler, linker, and assembler. These include a completely
- restructured set of header files, which bring COHERENT closer to the
- POSIX standard; and support for mathematics co-processors. This greatly
- simplifies the task of porting UNIX software to COHERENT.
-
- * Udo Munk's visual shell vsh. This shell uses drop-down menus, function keys,
- and single-key commands to give you a simple, clear interface to the
- COHERENT system; yet it works on a character-based terminal.
-
- * The Taylor UUCP package. This is a more robust and flexible version of UUCP.
-
- * The MLP print spooler. This spooler is modelled after the UNIX command
- lp. You now can have multiple printers of any type plugged into your
- COHERENT systems, and access them via parallel ports, serial ports, or the
- auxiliary port on a terminal.
-
- * A more robust version of the "curses" library, including support for
- eight-bit characters and color.
-
- * troff now supports eight-bit character sets. troff now comes with tools
- to ``cook'' loadable PostScript fonts, and to access fonts built into the
- Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III.
-
- * Improved versions of the Bourne shell sh and the Korn shell ksh.
- Many bugs have been fixed, and the Bourne shell now supports shell functions
- and other useful features.
-
- * The following new commands have been added to COHERENT:
- almanac Print a listing of the events on today's date in history
- apropos Find the Lexicon entries that relate to a given topic
- asymkdev Create a node for asynchronous devices
- cancel Cancel a print job
- chreq Change a job's priority, life expectancy, or output device
- cohtune Change the value of a flag or variable in a device driver
- cu UNIX-style communications program
- fmt Adjust the length of lines in a file of text
- fwtable Build a troff font-width table from a PCL or PostScript
- ``soft font''
- gnucpio GNU version of the cpio tape-archiving tool
- gtar GNU version of the tar tape archiver
- gzip Industry-standard compress tool. The Free Software Foundation
- idenable Add a device driver to the COHERENT kernel, or delete a
- driver from it
- idmkcoh Build a new bootable kernel
- lcasep Convert text to lower case
- idtune Set the value of a ``tunable'' variable in the COHERENT kernel
- ipcrm Remove an interprocess-communication item from memory
- ipcs Display a snapshot of interprocess communications
- lp Spool a job for printing via the MLP spooler
- lpadmin Administer the MLP spooler
- lpsched Turn on the lp print spooler
- lpshut Turn off the lp print spooler
- lpstat Give the status of a printer or job spooled through the
- MLP spooler
- pclfont Prepare a PCL for downloading via MLP
- PSfont Cook an Adobe font into downloadable PostScript
- reprint Reprint a spooled job
- route Show or reset a user's default printer
- tape Manipulate a tape device
- ttytype Set the default types of remote terminals
- vsh Invoke the visual shell
-

- X comes with color and monochrome servers, a selection of fonts, and a number
- of standard utilities and clients. It also comes with X libraries and tools
- so you can recompile your own X sources, should you wish, and a manual.
-

- addition to what is used by COHERENT), and at least four megabytes of RAM
- (we recommend at least eight megabytes if you want to do anything real).
