  10. <P>To be as simple as possible: It's a program which makes World Wide Web pages
  11. available to everyone who points a webbrowser to your Internet site.
  12. Every webpage on the Internet (or intranet) is served by an so called
  13. httpdaemon (hyper text transfer protocol daemon).  
  14. Apache is the most used web server in the Internet and is now available for the Amiga.

  16. <P>The Amiga Apache http server is fully compatible with the Unix version of the Apache
  17. http server which can be found at <A HREF="http://www.apache.org/">www.apache.org</A>.

  23. <LI>  Configurability - the configuration files let you change just about
  24.   every aspect of the server
  25. <LI>  HTTP 1.1 support
  26. <LI>  the fastest webserver for the Amiga available
  27. <LI>  Virtual Host support (have more hosts on your Amiga)
  28. <LI>  Cool ftp directories - Apache associates icons with files
  29. <LI>  Easier navigation in ftp server directory trees
  30. <LI>  RX-GATE for execution of Arexx scripts
  31. <LI>  proxy server capabilities
  32. <LI>  Unix paths for more compatiblity. Default path changed to: /usr/local/apache
  33. <LI>  Secure SSI capable (as far SSI can be save :)
  34. <LI>  Execution of CGI scripts as another user than root.

  37. <CENTER><H2>Who is who?</H2></CENTER>

  40. The Amiga Apache project is runned by Amiga volunteers who think that the Amiga could
  41. benefit from a professional http server like Apache. We do it for free, since the
  42. Apache sources are for free too. The real work is therefore not done by us, but
  43. at the <A HREF="http://www.apache.org">Apache server project</A>. However, it still needs
  44. a lot of work before it runs on the Amiga.

  47. At this moment there are three of us: Jeff Shepherd, who does the really hard work,
  48. Bert Vortman, the webmaster, package maintainer & developer of the Amiga Apache homepage
  49. and Rüdiger Kuhlmann who made the Apache_1.3.4 available and gave the project a new
  50. push. The sources are compiled by Jeff Shepherd, who compiled succesfully the Pine, Pico,
  51. Pilot, Imapd and Ipopd sources. He is also one of the developers of the Ixemul.library,
  52. he added the network support of ixemul.

  54. <CENTER><H2>What has happened until now?</H2></CENTER>

  57. Well, there was for a few months a big silence at the Amiga Apache Site. Bert has a new
  58. provider which didn't offer a static ipaddress needed for the mailinglists and also on 
  59. a personal level in his life things were not too great which made that the Project 
  60. was at hold. My sincere excuses to everybody who waited for new development.

  63. Well, basically, Jeff has compiled the sources and made some changes in the Ixemul.library
  64. in order to run Apache. The 1.3.4 sources are succesfully compiled now and we await bug
  65. reports from you all. We are now at the 1.3 release, since the 1.0.5 apache version
  66. that Jeff Shepherd uploaded to the Aminet archives.

  69. <CENTER><H2>What's in the future?</H2></CENTER>

  72. With the help of the Amiga Apache server it is possible to make a real professional 
  73. internet server out of the Amiga with enhanced capabilities. Here are some ideas:

  75. <UH> interfacing with Amiga programs like: 
  76. <LI> databases 
  77. <LI> spreadsheets 
  78. <LI> paint-programs
  79. <LI> conversion utilities, 
  80. <LI> mail & news software etc, etc...

  84. These things are possible with the REXX interface that most of the Amiga
  85. programs supports. For example: you can a make HTML page where you put a form
  86. with some questions. With 'submit' you execute a REXX program that reads the
  87. data from the html form, puts the data in a database (Fiasco or Superbase for example),
  88. and returns with a message. It's then very easy to maintain the data, much easier
  89. than on a UNIX machine. Print it, save it, make a chart, save it in Lotus 123 format,
  90. delete it, port it to a PC, etc, etc. The possibilities are endless, use your own
  91. creativity! These kind of applications are very easy to make with a little
  92. knowledge of REXX and sh.

  96. uses Amiga Apache (It does not matter if the site is 24h a day online or not!)
