  7. What is it?

  10.     LharcUUCP is a small tool to speed your uucico transfers up.  uucico's
  11. performance goes down, when you have to transfer plenty of small files,
  12. like e-mail and the corresponding description file.  Larger files,
  13. however, are transferred at satisfying speed and efficiency--at least with
  14. a larger blocksize.

  16.     The idea is to batch all your e-mail and to transfer this large file
  17. rather than all of them seperatly. Additionally, this larger file can be
  18. crunched much better than the smaller ones. Ideas like this are available
  19. for several years now, namely bsmtp or rsmtp.

  21.     But these methods have one significant disadvantage: Once, the mails
  22. are batched, you can't add any files anymore! This means, that you can't
  23. run the batcher several times a day without having several smaller files
  24. again. And if you batch only a few times a day, you're stuck with certain
  25. poll-times.

  27.     "So," I thought, "why not use lharc or any similar archiver?" These
  28. archivers can crunch the data very well and they can still add files at a
  29. later time. Additionally, lzh-archives are understood on virtually every
  30. platform.

  32.     This is what LharcUUCP does! It scans your spool directory for queued
  33. jobs and archives them into one file using lharc. Currently, only mail-
  34. and news jobs are processed. Future versions might batch UUCP file
  35. transfers, too. Then an appropiate command- (`X.system*') and description
  36. file (`D.systemX*') is created--to tell uucico what to do with the archive.

  38.     In case, such an archive already exists when LharcUUCP is issued, it
  39. adds the new jobs to that archives, *not* creating a second file to
  40. transfer!

  42.     On the other side of the transfer, a new uuxqt is required, which
  43. recognizes the archive type and handles it correctly, but that is a very
  44. small and easy addition.
