New installations
=================
To install Angband, simply copy !Angband onto a hard or floppy disc.
It is not advisable to run it directly from the archive.
You may need to use SysMerge to update your System folder before
running Angband for the first time - see SysMerge's Help file for more
info.
If you are installing Angband in a read-only area, you may want to alter
the values of the Angband$Path and Angband$ChoicesFile system variables
in Angband's !Run file.
For general (platform-independent) information on Angband, read the README
file in this directory. For information on RISC OS Angband, see Angband's
Help file.
For information on how to recompile Angband, look in the Compiling
directory.
Upgrading from Angband 2.7.8
============================
If you already have a copy of Angband 2.7.8, you should follow the
following steps:
1) Move your existing Angband application to a safe place.
2) Copy this Angband application onto a hard or floppy disc.
3) If you want to keep your savefiles (as you probably do!) you
should copy them from lib.save in your old Angband to somewhere
alongside your new Angband, then set their type to 118. Note that
once loaded into Angband 2.7.9, they will no longer be usable
with Angband 2.7.8. Keep a backup, just in case.
4) You may want to move files from your old lib directory into your
new directory. In particular:
the contents of the bone directory (data for ghosts)
any extra help files you have installed in the help directory
the "scores/raw" file from the data directory (your hiscores)
[but note that this should now be stored in the lib.apex
directory]
5) Any existing macro definitions you have in your pref-acn directory
will not work, as keycodes have changed. See the Help file for more
info.
6) Use SysMerge to update your System folder (this release uses more
modules than previous releases).
Reset your machine. You can now start Angband by double-clicking on
a savefile.
