  27.     Security Fix Description

  29. TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
  30.  
  31. Netscape Navigator uses random information to generate session
  32. encryption keys of either 40 or 128 bits in length. The random
  33. information is found through a variety of functions that look into a
  34. user's machine for information about how many processes are running,
  35. process ID numbers, the current time in microseconds, etc. Previous
  36. releases of Netscape Navigator were vulnerable because the size of
  37. random input was less than the size of the subsequent keys. This
  38. means that instead of searching through all the 2^128 possible keys
  39. by brute force, a potential intruder only had to search through a
  40. significantly smaller key space by brute force. This was a
  41. substantially easier problem to solve because it takes much less
  42. compute time and means 40-bit or 128-bit key strength is
  43. substantially reduced.

  46. SOLUTION
  47.  
  48. Netscape Navigator 1.22 (Windows), 1.12 (Macintosh and Unix), 1.12I
  49. (localized builds for all 3 platforms) fixes the specific portion of
  50. our software where this vulnerability existed. We have significantly
  51. increased the amount of random information that cannot be discovered
  52. by external sources from approximately 30 bits to approximately 300
  53. bits.

  55. Netscape has greatly expanded the techniques and sources used to
  56. generate the random information. The number of unpredictable bits in
  57. the RNG makes it no lnoger the weak link in the chain.

  60.         Installation Instructions
  61. =======================================================================

  63. * Installation
  64.    Version 1.22 is being distributed as both a 16-bit Windows program and 
  65.    a 32-bit windows program.  If you are running Win3.x you must use the 
  66.    16-bit version even if you are running Win32s, because the 32-bit 
  67.    version makes use of 32-bit API calls not supported by Win32s.
  68.    Both the 16-bit and 32-bit versions includes an installation program.
  69.    To install Netscape run the setup.exe program. The Netscape
  70.    installation program will install Netscape in a directory of your
  71.    choice, add a Netscape section to your WIN.INI file, and create a
  72.    Program Manager group and item.
  73.  
  74.    The 32-bit Netscape Navigator stores preferences in the system registry.
  75.

  79.         MAPI Installation
  80. =======================================================================
  81. MAPI is now available in the 32bit version of the Navigator in Win 95
  82. for Mail and News.  This is only for Windows 95 and not NT.
  83. As you know MS Exchange is a mail application, it stores and
  84. orginizes your mail.  Just like MS Mail, Netscape Internet Transport is
  85. a messaging service, but different than MS Mail, and it allows you to
  86. send and receive internet e-mail and post news messages in Netscape.
  87. Enabling the option "Use Exchange client for Mail and News" will not
  88. work correctly unless Netscape Internet Transport in Configured for
  89. MS Exchange app in Control Panel.

  91. To configure MAPI, you will need to do the following if you don't have MS
  92. MAIL already configured.
  93. 1) Adding Netscape Internet Transport
  94.    a) go to the Control Panel
  95.    b) double click on Mail/Fax icon
  96.    c) click on the Add button
  97.    d) Select Netscape Internet Transport, click on Next
  98.    at this point follow the Inbox Setup Wizard.
  99.    f) When you are done, click on Properties and make sure
  100.       that Netscape Internet Transport is list under Services.
  101.  
  102. To configure MAPI when you have MS MAIL already configured do the 
  103. following.
  104. 1) Adding Netscape Internet Transport to your existing Profile
  105.    a) go to the Control Panel
  106.    b) double click on Mail/Fax icon
  107.    c) click on the Add button
  108.    d) Select Netscape Internet Transport under the list of available
  109.       Information Services. Click on OK
  110.    e) Fill out the the forms for USERS and HOST. Click OK
  111. 2) Adding Netscape Internet Transport to a new Profile
  112.    a) go to the Control Panel
  113.    b) double click on Mail/Fax icon
  114.    c) click on Show Profiles
  115.    d) click on Add
  116.    e) Select Netscape Internet Transport, click on Next
  117.    f) enter the Profile Name
  118.    at this point follow the Inbox Setup Wizard.
  119.    g) When you are done, click on Properties and make sure
  120.       that Netscape Internet Transport is list under Services.

  122. If you don't have MS Exchange already installed and you have already
  123. installed the Netscape Navigator, you will need to reinstall the 
  124. Navigator once you have installed MS Exchange.
  125.

  127.         Win32s
  128. ========================================================================
  129. If you are running version 1.15 or below of Win32s, you will be unable to
  130. install the Netscape Navigator unless you upgrade to version 1.20 of Win32s
  131. or you remove Win32.
  132.  
  133. You can determine which version of Win32s you have in one of two ways:
  134.     - check the WIN32S.INI file in your Windows system directory
  135.     - if you are running Windows for Workgroups, select the WIN32S16.DLL 
  136.       file from the Windows system directory in File Manager. Then from 
  137.       the File menu, choose Properties. The Version line contains the 
  138.       major version and the build number. 
  139.  
  140. To remove Win32s, do the following:
  141.  
  142. 1. Remove the following line from the [386Enh] section in the SYSTEM.INI 
  143.    file:
  144.       device=<WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\win32s\w32s.386
  145.    where <WINDOWS> and <SYSTEM> are where the Windows and System
  146.    directories are, respectively.
  147. 2. Remove winmm16.dll from the following line from the [BOOT] section in 
  148.    the SYSTEM.INI file:
  149.       drivers=mmsystem.dll winmm16.dll
  150. 3. Delete the following files from the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM> subdirectory:
  151.       W32SYS.DLL
  152.       WIN32S16.DLL
  153.       WIN32S.INI
  154. 4. Delete all the files in the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\WIN32S subdirectory.
  155.    Then delete the subdirectory itself.
  156. 5. Restart Windows.
  157. Here's how you can obtain Win32s version 1.20 which Microsoft refers
  158. to as application note PW1118:
  159.   To obtain this Application Note (number PW1118) and the files
  160.   included with it, download PW1118.EXE, a self-extracting file,
  161.   from the Microsoft Software Library (MSL) on the following services:
  162.    - CompuServe
  163.         GO MSL
  164.         Search for PW1118.EXE
  165.         Display results and download
  166.    - Microsoft Download Service (MSDL)
  167.         Dial (206) 936-6735 to connect to MSDL

  176. The Netscape install program for Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups
  177. will install the following OLE2 files into the Windows System directory

  193. The Netscape installer will overwrite existing OLE2 DLLs with the latest
  194. versions for US Windows. This will not affect 32-bit Windows. For 16-bit
  195. Windows, the only difference between the US and the Japanese versions are
  196. the internationalization of error strings.
  197. Occasionally, the Japanese user may see an English language OLE2 error
  198. message after installing Netscape.
  199. Currently, there are no Japanese versions available for the OLE2 DLLs.
  200. Netscape is working with Microsoft to make the Japanese version of the 
  201. OLE2 DLLs available.

  203.         Running Netscape
  204. =======================================================================
  205. What do I need to run Netscape Navigator?
  206. You must have a direct Internet connection before you can use Netscape.
  207. The ability to send and receive e-mail does not necessarily mean you can
  208. run Netscape. There are three requirements for Netscape Navigator 1.22:
  209.     1. A direct Ethernet connection to the net, or a dialup
  210.        SLIP or PPP account from an Internet service provider.
  211.     2. TCP/IP stack
  212.     3. Netscape Navigator software
  213.  
  214. You can get a direct connection to the Internet through a service
  215. provider in your area.  You will need to get a SLIP or a PPP account
  216. from an Internet provider (for a dialup account).
  217.  
  218. When you have full Internet connectivity, you need to have a TCP/IP
  219. stack, dialer, and WINSOCK.DLL file.

  222.         Cannot Find WINSOCK.DLL

  225. If you get the error message "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL" when running 
  226. Netscape Navigator that means your computer is looking for the WINSOCK.DLL
  227. file, which is part of a winsock package (also includes dialer, 
  228. TCP/IP stack).
  229.  
  230. A winsock package makes it so that your PC can talk TCP/IP, which is 
  231. necessary for Netscape to run. See the "Running Netscape" section for 
  232. details on running the Netscape Navigator, and the "Obtaining a Winsock 
  233. Package" section for suggestions on obtaining a winsock package.

  252. Implementation (general):
  253. Put the winsock in its own directory, for example, C:\WINSOCK,
  254. and include the directory in your DOS PATH statement.
  255.  
  256. Enter Windows, create a group in the Program Manager for all files
  257. with your winsock program.
  258.  
  259. Please be sure that the Netscape directory is in your path located
  260. in your autoexec.bat file. You may need to add:
  261.  
  262. PATH=C:\(name of the directory where netscape is located)
  263. After making this change, save the file and reboot your computer.
