  27. WHAT ARE .DAT FILES?
  28.  
  29. DAT files contain up-to-date virus signatures and other
  30. information that Network Associates anti-virus products use
  31. to protect your computer against the thousands of computer
  32. viruses in circulation. New .DAT files are released each
  33. month to provide protection against the 100 to 300 new
  34. viruses that are discovered each month. To ensure that you
  35. are protected against the latest virus threats, download
  36. and install the latest .DAT files every month.

  41. The 9712 .DAT files were the last .DAT files Network
  42. Associates released publicly for the 2.x series of
  43. anti-virus products. The 9803 .DAT files are being supplied
  44. as a service to Network Associates customers who have not
  45. yet upgraded to the current 3.x versions of Network
  46. Associates anti-virus products. The 9803 .DAT files are the
  47. last that will be available for the Network Associates 2.x
  48. series of anti-virus products.

  62. anti-virus products that use v2.x series engines only. These
  63. .DAT files are not intended for use with Network Associates
  64. v3.x series engines.

  297. 1.  Using the 9803 .DAT files with VirusScan v2.0.4 for
  298.     Windows 95 or later Windows versions will cause an 
  299.     Invalid Page Fault. To avoid this problem, upgrade
  300.     VirusScan to v3.x.x.
  301.  
  302. 2.  Installing the 9803 .DAT files on a system running
  303.     Windows 3.1x and VirusScan v2.5.0 will cause Windows
  304.     to quit when you start File Manager. To avoid this
  305.     problem, upgrade VirusScan for Windows 3.1x to
  306.     v3.x.x.
  307.  
  308. 3.  These .DAT files include a comprehensive list of virus 
  309.     definitions. You may view this list, but please note
  310.     that your system might run out of memory if you attempt
  311.     to do so while running VirusScan for Windows 3.1x
  312.     version 2.x.
  313.  
  314. 4.  VirusScan versions 2.0.8 and 2.0.9 might falsely detect
  315.     the virus TENTATRICKLE.1049C while scanning your system
  316.     during bootup. To avoid this problem, upgrade VirusScan
  317.     to version 3.x.x.

  320. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  322. Q: VirusScan detects viruses in memory on a system known to
  323.    be virus free. What can I do to eliminate this false
  324.    detection?
  325.  
  326. A: If you are experiencing false "virus in memory"
  327.    detections while using the .DAT files in conjunction
  328.    with VirusScan for DOS, use the /NOMEM scan option or
  329.    upgrade to VirusScan for DOS v3.x. See Contacting
  330.    Network Associates below to learn how to connect to one
  331.    of the Network Associates electronic services.

  337. * INSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
  338.    
  339. DAT file updates are stored in a compressed format to reduce
  340. transmission time. To install your update, create a
  341. temporary directory and copy the downloaded file to the
  342. directory. Unzip the files, then copy them to the
  343. appropriate permanent directories, replacing your existing
  344. files.
  345.

  352.        NAMES.DAT = Data file for virus names
  353.         SCAN.DAT = Data file for virus scanning

  355. * TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *
  356.  
  357. The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort
  358. by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to come up with
  359. one standard by which customers can verify their anti-virus
  360. installations. To test your installation, copy the following
  361. line into its own file and name it EICAR.COM.
  362.  
  363. X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
  364.  
  365. When done, you will have a 69- or 70-byte file.
  366.  
  367. When VirusScan is applied to this file, Scan will report
  368. finding the EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.
  369.  
  370. It is important to know that THIS IS NOT A VIRUS. However,
  371. users often have the need to test that their installations
  372. function correctly. The anti-virus industry, through the
  373. European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research, has
  374. adopted this standard to facilitate this need.
  375.  
  376. Please delete the file when installation testing is
  377. completed so unsuspecting users are not unnecessarily
  378. alarmed.

  383. Macro viruses are named using this standard:
  384.  
  385. The first of a family is given "name.A". For each
  386. subsequently discovered variant, The suffix letters progress
  387. until .Z is reached. The next is given .AA until .AZ is
  388. reached. The next is given .BA, etc. until .ZZ is reached.
  389. The next would then be given .AAA and so on.
  390.  
  391. A macro virus name given without a variant notation means a 
  392. non-specific variant is being referenced.
