TECHNICAL NOTE: Upgrading NetWare 4.01 Resources to NetWare 4.02
(TN 9403)
Purpose of This Technical Note
==============================
To tell users how to upgrade NetWare 4.01 resources in their
Protected Resource List. Users must perform this procedure in order
for Network Archivist or Backup Director to communicate with the
NetWare 4.02 server and back up its protected resources.
NOTE: This technique also applies to NW 3.1x situations where updating
the TSA can cause PLSM-53 errors because the TSA Name pattern
changes from one version to the next.
Problem Description
===================
If you have already installed NetWare 4.02 and attempted to scan or
back up the 4.02 server, you may have already observed the
following error:
PLSM-53 "There are no Target Service Agents that match
the <ServerName> pattern."
The problem occurs because the System Control Database still refers
to the name of the former version of the 4.x TSA ("NetWare 4.01
File System") and not the name of the TSA400.NLM ("NetWare File
System"), which is currently being shipped with NetWare 4.02.
Future upgrades of NetWare will not affect protected resources
residing on NetWare 4.02 and above servers. The TSA name reported by
this new version of TSA400.NLM is not version specific, therefore you
need to modify the TSA name in the Protected Resource List just once
for each 4.02 resource.
Modifying TSA Names in the Protected Resource List
==================================================
You can do this procedure whether or not you already attempted to
run a backup operation on the 4.02 server. Repeat this procedure
for each 4.01 server you have upgraded to 4.02.
Before You Begin
----------------
+ You must have completed the upgrade installation of
NetWare 4.02 on the appropriate servers.
+ If you are using a DOS workstation for this procedure, be
sure that you have at least 530K of conventional memory
and a total of 1MB of extended/expanded memory available.
Without sufficient available memory on the workstation, there is
a risk that the System Control Database may be corrupted
during this procedure.
1. From Network Archivist (or Backup Director), open the
Configure menu and select the Protected Resource List
option.
2. Highlight a resource on the 4.02 server and press
<Enter>.
The resource's volume and history information appear.
The lower-left corner of the screen displays:
"TSA Name: <ServerName>.Netware 4.01 File System"
3. Press <Enter> again. The program displays the "Select a
Server" menu listing all servers where TSAs are loaded.
4. Select the 4.02 server that this resource resides on.
5. Network Archivist (or Backup Director) prompts you to
select the appropriate TSA and/or resource, depending on
the configuration of the server and the number of TSAs
loaded on the 4.02 server. If there is no prompt asking
you to select a TSA, that means the server has only one
TSA (this should be the NetWare File System TSA) and it
has automatically been selected for you.
After you have selected the resource you want protected
(Choose the same resource that is displayed in the
Resource field on the upper-left of the screen), note
that the lower-left corner of the screen now displays:
"TSA Name: <ServerName> NetWare File System"
You have successfully modified the TSA name for a 4.02
server's resource in the Protected Resource List. Repeat
steps 2 through 5 for any additional resources on this
server you want protected.
NOTE: For additional information about this procedure, refer to
the "Adding a Resource" section in Chapter 3 of your User's Guide.
If You Have Problems
====================
If the workstation runs out of memory during the procedure it can
corrupt your System Control Database, you could observe any of
the following problems:
+ The workstation "hangs."
+ The server for which you were selecting the new TSA appear
deleted from the Protected Resource List.
+ The remaining resources on the Protected Resource List no
longer correspond to the numbered lines.
These problems indicate that your System Control Database is
corrupted. You must restore your System Control Database from media
and verify that the workstation has sufficient memory.
