Tech Note #: 9103 (Revised 03/21/95)
Date: January 29, 1991
Subject: The Palindrome Bulletin Board System (BBS)
Keywords: BBS SUPPORT DOWNLOAD UPLOAD
Introduction to the Palindrome BBS
----------------------------------
Palindrome's Technical Communications Department operates a Bulletin
Board System (BBS) for the exchange of messages and files between
Palindrome Technical Support and resellers and users of the Network
Archivist.
The Palindrome BBS is not an alternative to Palindrome Technical
Support. If you have a basic question and wish to receive advice, a
message or comment can be left for the Sysop.
∙ Phone Number: (708)505-3336
This line is on a "hunt
group" - if the line is busy
you will rotate to the next
available line.
∙ BBS Software: Wildcat!
∙ Modems: USRobotics Courier HST Dual
Standard - HST, V.32, V.42, and
V.42BIS compatibility.
The phone number is answered by a modem and the bulletin board software
when you place a call with your modem and communications software. The
BBS software is designed and configured to make your use of the BBS as
simple and as reliable as possible. If your modem is a:
∙ US Robotics HST modem, you can connect to the
Palindrome BBS in USRobotics High Speed Technology
(HST) mode at 14.4K bps.
∙ V.32 compatible modem (MultiTech V.32, USRobotics
Courier V.32, etc.), you can connect to the BBS at
9600 bps.
∙ Any 1200 bps modem, you can connect to the BBS at
1200 bps.
∙ Any 2400 bps modem, you can connect to the BBS at
2400 bps.
Prepare for a Call to the Palindrome BBS
----------------------------------------
Obtain a modem and a terminal emulation communications program. Procomm
Plus from DATASTORM TECHNOLOGIES, Inc. is a good and readily available
communications program. Some other commonly used communication programs
include: Crosstalk, Smartcom, or QMODEM. Use of a terminal emulation
communications program for BBS access is generally easier and more
straight forward than use of a "remote control" program such as Carbon
Copy, PC Anywhere, or CO-Session.
Your communications program should allow settings for baud rate, parity,
data bits, stop bits, duplex mode, and terminal emulation. Configure
the communications program as follows:
∙ Set the baud rate to match the highest rate
supported by your modem.
∙ Set parity to NONE
∙ Set Data Bits to 8
∙ Set Stop Bits to 1
∙ Set Duplex to FULL
∙ Set Terminal Emulation to ANSI
Once these have been set you are ready to call the Palindrome BBS.
Instruct your communications program to dial (708)505-3336.
What to Expect During Your First Call
-------------------------------------
When you make your _first_ call to the Palindrome BBS, after the modem

protocols such as ZMODEM for file transfers, or to quickly see and
change choices as new protocols are added.

========================================================================
You are now logged onto the Palindrome BBS. From the Main Menu you can
access the File Menu and the Message Menu.
File Menu
---------
The File Menu is your gateway to receive files from Palindrome or to
send files to Palindrome.
Notes on Compressed Files
-------------------------
File compression is a technique used to "shrink" files and/or combine
several files into one. The Palindrome BBS uses file compressed with
PKware's PKZIP utility.
PK204G.EXE are available for downloading from the BBS.
PK204G.EXE, when executed, will "self extract" and create PKZIP.EXE,
PKUNZIP.EXE and documentation files. Read the documentation for
information on the programs. PKZIP.EXE and PKUNZIP.EXE also display
help screens when executed from the command line.
To reduce file transfer time and keep your upload files together
Palindrome prefers that you compress them with PKZIP before you call.
