CPC-MODEM Ver. 2.1
Authors' Description
Written by Arnold Isp
1. What is CPC-MODEM ?
CPC-MODEM v2.1 isÉ aÉ simpleÉ communicationÉ program which supports
èthree main sections: terminal, echo-terminalÉ and X-Modem protocol. It
èalso allows to configure SIOÉ andÉ useÉ phoneÉ book (20 entries).
CPC-MODEM is a rewritten versionÉ ofÉ widely-known (but not widely-
èused) PC-MODEM. WatchÉ creditsÉ whenÉ runningÉ -É theyÉ show stages of
èdevelopment. First, Stanislaw Szczygiel adaptedÉ itÉ for CPC and wrote
èprocedures to access hardware directly.É TheÉ second stage: me, Michal
èSzokoloÉ &É SEMÉ 03375991ÉÉ BÉÉ wroteÉÉ PhoneBookÉÉ unitÉ andÉ rewrote
è"the terminal".
2. What it gives and what it's for?
CPC-MODEM allows to communicate thruÉ RS 232C interface (and MODEM)
èbetween two computersÉ atÉ reasonableÉ speedÉ (300-2400É baud)É and to
èsend/receiveÉ filesÉ usingÉÉ X-MODEMÉÉ protocolÉÉ (inventedÉÉ byÉ Ward
èChristiansen). MostÉ commonÉ useÉ ofÉ CPC-MODEMÉ isÉ toÉ accessÉ BBS's
èfor user-to-user communicationÉ (byÉ electronicÉ mail),É file exchange
èetc.
Linking to FidoNet (by CPC-MODEM)É gives an opportunity to exchange
èmail and/or softwareÉ withÉ allÉ computerÉ usersÉ (evenÉ with ones in
èAlaska).
3. How to use CPC-MODEM ?
To run CPC-MODEM simply insert disk with CM.COM file into the drive
èand type "CM<return>" at theÉ systemÉ prompt.É Program loads and shows
èyou the mainÉ menuÉ withÉ options.É PressingÉ keyÉ shownÉ to the right
èinvokes the option.
3.1. Configuring CPC-MODEM
Option "O" (set communicationÉ Options)É allows to change baudrate,
èword lenght and parity check.É WhenÉ youÉ pressÉ "O"É you will enter the
èsubmenu of selections. It has built-in explanation.
Option "L" (Log disk or user) allows to change disk and/or user for
èfiles to be accessed. Unfortunately, phoneÉ book file (CM.PHB) is read
èfrom and written to logged drive/user.
3.2. Terminal and Echo-terminal.
CPC-MODEM supports two modesÉ ofÉ terminal:É with and without local
èecho. Echo-terminal (the one withÉ localÉ echo)É is used only when you
èconnect to friendsÉ CPC-MODEMÉ (orÉ otherÉ commsÉ program,É like ZMP).
èStandard terminal allows also:É one-keyÉ send/receive (pressing Ctrl-S
èor Ctrl-R enters SEND or RECEIVE) and phone dialing (semi-automatic).
3.3. X-MODEM operations: Sending and Receiving files.
CPC-MODEMÉ supportsÉ X-MODEMÉÉ protocolÉÉ toÉÉ send/receiveÉ files.
èSend/Receive module can beÉ calledÉ fromÉ mainÉ menu or from Terminal.
èStandard X-MODEM is implemented, but when receiving, batch mode may be
èused. Batch sending is not possible.
When you enter Send/Receive, youÉ willÉ beÉ askedÉ for file name to
èsend/receive (when receiving batch, youÉ shouldÉ enter "*.*"), then X-
èMODEM starts. You can stop transfer at any time by pressing Ctrl-X.
3.4. Other operations
Other operations,É likeÉ "Quit"É andÉ "Directory"É don'tÉ needÉ any
èdescription at all.
4. Message and warning
With great amount of workÉ doneÉ and time-consuming testing we give
èyou CPC-MODEM version 2.1, the public domain communication program for
èAmstrad CPC (well, it worksÉ onlyÉ underÉ CP/M Plus...). We regret, we
èare unableÉ toÉ includeÉ suchÉ thingsÉ likeÉ ANSIÉ emulation,É Z-MODEM
èprotocol etc, but we areÉ onlyÉ humansÉ andÉ we cannot understand some
èthings.
Warning: we can notÉ guaranteeÉ thatÉ CPC-MODEMÉ willÉ work in your
èenvironment,É butÉ weÉ thinkÉÉ itÉÉ would.ÉÉ WeÉÉ willÉ notÉ takeÉ any
èresponsibility for damages caused byÉ CPC-MODEMÉ (but we couldn't find
èany possibilty of any damage).
We may change program and/or documentation without any notice. We will
try to give full and up-to-date documentation, but we're only humans (not
LGM's nor LCP).
Now, you are warned.
5. Copyrights etc.
CPC-MODEM is a PUBLIC DOMAINÉ (FREEWARE)É program. It may be copied
èand used without paying usÉ anyÉ money.É ItÉ canÉ notÉ beÉ sold. It
may be modified (source text will soon be distributed) as long as the
credit messages are preserved, but of course, you may add your name!
