CP/M PRINTMASTER
for the
AMSTRAD CPC6128 COMPUTER
Herewith are the two CP/M PRINTMASTER discs. You are strongly advised
to make working copies of these discs and to set aside the 'originals'
as master discs.
Because difficulties were experienced in getting PRINTMASTER to run
properly on a CPC6128 computer, certain changes have had to be made
but the program is essentially the same as that reviewed in CPC USER.
Disc No.1 is in Amstrad CPC system format and must be used in Drive A.
Disc No.2 is in Amstrad CPC data format and must be used in Drive B.
Disc No. 1 has the same files on both sides; similarly, Disc No.2 has
identical files on both sides. The constituent files are listed
overleaf. There is no CP/M on either disc, so you will need to load
CP/M Plus before inserting the program discs in your disc drives. The
program can now be run on a dual disc drive system or a single drive
system. For use on a single drive system, load Disc No.1 in the disc
drive and load Disc No.2 in the drive only when requested by the on-
screen scrolling prompt.
To load and run CP/M PRINTMASTER proceed as follows. Insert your CP/M
Plus system disc in Drive A and enter |CPM to load CP/M Plus. When
the A> prompt appears on screen, replace the CP/M Plus system disc
with Printmaster Disc No.1 then enter PM and press the Return Key.
Follow the menus and on-screen prompts. For most of the time, select
"From System Disc" whenever there's a choice between "From System
Disc" or "From Other Disc" on the menus (Disc No.2 is mainly for
selecting fonts, so most of the program's features are accessed from
Disc No.1). If, when you run the program, you find that the program
does not respond to the keyboard cursor keys, this is probably due to
a setkeys command in a Profile.Sub file on your CP/M system disc; CP/M
PRINTMASTER is very sensitive to some aspects of the CPC6128 hardware.
I could find no logical reason for these irritating hic-cups, but
trial and error has shown that CP/M PRINTMASTER is more reliable when
there's no setkeys or language command. My advice is to use a 'clean'
CP/M Plus system disc with no .SUB file and no enhancement utilities
of any sort. Doesn't make sense I know, but there it is.
You will need to 'install' the printer driver of your choice; this is
achieved via the Select Printer option on the Main Menu; the selected
option will be automatically stored in the SET.UP file. Unwanted
printer drivers can then be deleted from your working copy of Disc
No.1. Once this has been done, you may like to re-arrange the files
on your working copies of the discs so that you can have more .FNT
files on Disc No.1. However, proceed with caution and make your
changes only to working copies of PRINTMASTER; do NOT alter your
master discs. Remember that Disc No.1 is in system format and Disc
No.2 is in data format; problems may arise if you change Disc No.2 to
system format. For single disc drive systems, users may prefer to
have Disc No.1 on Side 1 of the disc and Disc No.2 on Side 2 of the
same disc - it's up to you.
Unfortunately, time does not permit me to provide any further
configuration or customising service concerning CP/M PRINTMASTER. The
organisation of discs and files is a matter for individual users to
resolve. So far as I'm aware, no user-documentation exists for this
program; the only guidance I can offer is contained in my article
published in CPC USER.
The file extensions have the following meanings: COM is a program
file; MTX is a menu text file; PRN is a printer driver; SDR is a
graphics driver; SHP is a graphics library file; FNT is a typeface
font file.
The SD.COM file (a Sort Directory utility) is not part of the program
but has been included on both sides of both discs for your convenience
(at the CP/M A> prompt, enter SD// for on-screen help).
CP/M PRINTMASTER is supplied to you in the belief that it is a 'public
domain' program. Should it subsequently be learned that the program
is not in the public domain, you are requested to either destroy the
discs or make your peace with whoever the proprietor may be. The
program has been supplied to you in good faith and free of charge; I
accept no responsibility or liability whatsoever concerning any
dispute legal or otherwise that may arise out of the use of the
program.
