Another World
Now,it's my second issue,and I've still hav'nt got AW out on time.Never
mind.Better late then never.
AN EXPLANATION
I bet that you lot will be wondering why this issue was late.Well, this is what
happened. It was easter, and I was using a program which dumps CATs of discs to
the printer. When this was done,I sat down with a cup of tea in one hand and a
endless roll of continous paper in the other hand. After checking how much K
there was left on each disc,I set about transfering Tasword,MasterCalc and DFE
to a different disc. This different disc contained some programs from WACCI.
After messing around with Crime to copy the files,I CATed the disc. All was
fine.I then copied this new disc onto the back-up of the original disc.I
thought all was fine, but it was'nt.
I did'nt noticed untill I came to write one of the last articles in
AW1,when something went wrong.The loader for Tasword,"TASWORD.BAS",loaded
O.K,but when the computer tried to load "TASWORD.BIN",it chucked out a "read
fail",or "I've lost my glasses and I can't read this disc".I tried the back-
up,but the same happened.MasterCalc did'nt load ethier,but DFE did.
I was upset.However,I sent off for VDE,but this did'nt come.The rest of AW1
(which was only one article left to do) had to be done in BASIC.VDE came a bit
late,so I was late starting issue 2.The moral of this story is to verify your
discs.CP/M has one,and there's some in the Public Domain.I'm very sorry for
the late delivery of issue 2.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD PD LIBRARY?
After reading the feature in AA on PD,I thought I'd better say what I think of
PD libraries.I like libraries that stock their own software as well as
everybody elses.I like libraries that ask good prices, and have a speedy
turn around. However,do remember that PD libraries (and fanzines) are
hobbys.Still, none of them seem to treat their customers well. The maximum
waiting time for AW is two weeks. If it's going to be longer, then you will be
contacted (which is what happen with this issue).
In case your wondering where to send details about your library to,then
send it some to us.We'll give you a plug. Why not send us a catalouge, and
perhaps some unseen software to review.
While on the subject of PD libraries,I decied not to open a PD library. The
reason is because there's a lot of work envolved. However,we're going to open a
mail order superstore, where you can buy back issues and PD programs which have
been side B of AW.This superstore will be open soon.
Some PD libraries and fanzines (including some of the bigger ones) do have
poor records, but there some good libraries, fanzines and companys that have a
good serivice. These include WACCI,who are quick with sending the PD software
out.WAVE,a company who sometimes gets complaints, sent my copy of Mini Office 2
to me in a week.Other good companys are Siren Software, with the quick delivery
of my second 3.5" drive,Tasman Software, with the quick delivery of the Tasword
464 manual,and Sentinal Software,who sent me a catalouge promto.
IN THIS ISSUE
So,what's in this issue? Well, there's a feature on 101 ways to expand a
CPC,a look at the user group WACCI plus a review of the fanzine itself. There
is also the start of a new regular series called "Hot Tips",and some reviews
of PD software and PD discs.Of course, there's the three tutorials and lots
more.Well, what are you waiting for? Get reading!
