JL-COPY V CRIME V DISCKIT 3
In the first of a series of "group tests",we look at disc copiers.
Disc copiers are things that all CPC disc owners should have.Disc
copiers are important for keeping back-ups of programs. They are also
important for people like me who run a disczine.PD libraries will not
be able to live without them. This is why I'm doing this test.
Today,my copy of the WACCI PD disc 68 came.On this is JL-COPY and
Crime.I was puzzled over which one to use to copy AW when it comes
out. This sounded like a good idea for a group test.I also thought this
will be useful for readers, and PD libraries.
WHO'S WHO
Welcome to Another club. And tonight, for one night only, there is the
big fight! JL-Copy versus Crime Versus Disckit 3.We're going to make
a copy of the Powerpage disc,as this takes up one whole side of a
disc.
JL-COPY
This one gets around abit. It's probably in every PD library and it's
been on a AA covertape.
JL-Copy is a full copying suit.It contains a 64K,128K and even a
256K disc and file copiers!
And that's all it does.Copy discs and files. The other two copiers
also do other things,like verfiying,and formating.But then,this only
marks JL down a little,as it's the disc copying we're must interested
in.
For this test,we're using the 128K version.
First,JL-Copy took 64 seconds to copy one whole side of a standard
Amstrad disc.
JL-Copy will let you copy from drive A-A,B-B,A-B and B-A,though
I7m not sure weather this will work on 800K discs.
One good feature is that if the disc is the wrong format,or has a
error, then JL will format the disc.
The menu screen is boring, and has a poor choice of colours.
Overall,JL sounds good. Now for the others.....
CRIME
Bought you by one of Europe's finest and most famous coders,Crown. If
you have used Crunch, then this program will look familier smart
menu of Crunch (joke there) is on Crime.
To copy a disc,Crime took 58 seconds, making it the fastest so
far.
Crime will also copy files, format discs, and erase files. If Crime
comes across a disc error, then it will format the disc.JL Copy or
Disckit 3 won't.
Crime can also be set to your personal tastes. There's a choice of
two background colours, disc tracks can be set to 42 or 80 tracks youu
can also select single or double sided discs, filetracks (don't ask
what they are) CATing the disc and format the disc automaticly before
copying.
If you forget to take out the source disc, then a message will come
up.Like JL-Copy,crime will say when it's formatting a disc.
Now lets check out Disckit 3
DISCKIT 3
If you have a 664,6128 or a Amstrad DDI-1 disc drive then you will
have this program (or in one shape or form).Disckit 3 needs CP/M plus,
so it will only run on 6128's.This is a disavdanvatge,as CP/M takes a
age and a half to load.
So,how good is the copying? Well, disckit 3 took and wopping 66
seconds to copy a disc. The reason is that unlike JL or Crime,Disckit 3
copied a 178K disc in 3 goes.(or in other words, you had to swap
between the source disc and the disc you are copying onto about 3
times). Both JL and Crime needed two goes to copy a disc.
Disckit 3 did'nt get on with disc errors, wherelse Crime will do
something about it.
Disckit 3 also has a verify option.this checks the disc for disc
errors.

OVERALL VERDICT
CRIME *****
DISCKIT **
JL-COPY ***
As we can see,Crime is our winner.Look,to be frank it all depends on what
you need.If you want to do copying on a large scale (like if you run a
PD library) then go for Crime. If you think that paying 50p or less
for a PD prog is too much,or if you want a verify feature,or you also
want a DATA,SYSTEM and VENDOR formatter just when you need it,and you
can cope with the errors and the sluggish copying time, then go for
Disckit 3.If,however,you want the down to earth disc/file
coping,and/or your CPC has a 256K memory expainson, then go for
JL-Copy.
Thank you.AW
