╩C H A P T E R S I XΩ
╩6. The Less Serious SideΩ
Centrox provides several recreational programs for the
user to amuse themselves with. All of them are, of course,
still written in BASIC.
╩6.1 CYCLE - Light CycleΩ
╩Number Of PlayersΩ :None to three.
╩Computer ControlΩ :Yes-intelligent.
╩DifficultyΩ :Depends on who's playing !
╩KeysΩ :Player 1-Joystick.
Player 2-"\" for left and "f." for right.
Player 3-<SHIFT> for left and "v" for right.
In the game of light cycles, the object is to be the last
player to survive. Each of the players assumes control of
a light cycle which can be steered left or right. As it
travels, each cycle leaves a trail of light. If any cycle
hits this (or the side of the screen) it will crash-ending
the game.
There are always three riders competing in the game. If
less than three humans are playing then the computer
assumes control of the "free" bikes. If the '0' players
option is selected, the computer will race itself.
╩ScoringΩ :None !
╩6.2 SNAKEΩ
╩Number Of PlayersΩ :One
╩Computer ControlΩ :No.
╩DifficultyΩ :Quite Hard.
╩KeysΩ :Definable.
The object of the game is to guide a snake through ten
screens of obstacles. To complete a screen the snake must
eat all twenty of the people in the screen. At the same
time it must avoid eating walls or itself.
The hi-score table recognises certain "key" names but it
is up to the user to find out what these might be.
╩ScoringΩ :Ten points for each person eaten.
╩6.3 MAZEΩ
╩Number Of PlayersΩ :One
╩Computer ControlΩ :No
╩DifficultyΩ :Moderate
╩KeysΩ :Definable
The object of this game is to break out of a none
geographically analysed complex. To put it another way,
you must get out of a maze. The interior of the maze is
displayed in 3D and the maze itself can be very extensive.
Displays at the bottom of the screen show time remaining,
relative direction of the Exit and your current
coordinates.
The program can be invoked by name, or alternatively a
file name can be supplied. The referenced file must define
a maze in the following way:-
An "X" in the file indicates a concrete block.
A " " in the file indicates a passage.
An "E" indicates the exit, but this may be omitted and the
computer will choose the position of the exit.
An "S" indicates the start, but again this can be omitted.
In order to reduce the advantages gained from memorising
each maze, avoid using the "E" or "S" symbols in the
source file.
╩6.4 LIFEΩ
LIFE is a version of a popular program used to investigate
biological growth. A "culture" is set up and allowed to
thrive or die out according to three simple rules:-
1. Any cell with less than two neighbours
will die of "loneliness".
2. Any cell with more than three
neighbours will die of overcrowding.
3. A new cell can be created in a square
that is surrounded by exactly three other
cells. (Male, Female and referee..!)
When the program has loaded, use the Joystick or cursor
keys to move the cursor. Press FIRE or [COPY] to plant a
cell. When you have finished designing your culture, press
[SPACE].
Note that it is quite acceptable to have more than one
culture on the screen at once. With several cultures,
"wars" can be staged to study the interactions involved.
Not all cultures grow randomly-some cultures oscillate,
while others actually move ! The following designs
produce interesting results:-

XXX X X X X

╩6.5 TwigletΩ
This is a simple graphics demo. Press any key to exit.╒
