  69. If you try to bring up ZCPR3 manually (following the installation 
  70. instructions   in  ZCPR3:  The  Manual),  the  answer   is   yes.  
  71. Experience in assembly-language programming is necessary.  Source 
  72. code to your BIOS is necessary.  An understanding of CP/M and  Z-
  73. System concepts is necessary.
  74.      However,  you may not have to bring ZCPR3  manually.   There 
  75. are options...

  203. A  Z-System can take up a lot of memory, but it can also take  as 
  204. little as 1K, depending on how it's installed.
  205.      I  have  run the following programs in  a  full-up  Z-System 
  206. (which  takes 5K more than a similar CP/M system), and they  have 
  207. worked well for my applications:

  210.                    SpellStar           Pascal/MT+

  215.      There  are  some programs which hog so much  TPA  that  they 
  216. can't run under my full-up Z-System, but I don't use them or need 
  217. them for my applications.
  218.      The  impact on memory is really not that significant if  you 
  219. look at a true picture...

  263.      Note:  nK = p% indicates the size of the system in K (BIOS + 
  264. BDOS  +  CPR) and the percentage of the total memory taken up  by 
  265. the operating system.   In my case,  I am running a Maximum ZCPR3 
  266. with  a 5.5K BIOS overhead,  so this leaves a 48K TPA (64K  - 16K 
  267. System) which expands to 50K if the program overlays ZCPR3.   All 
  268. my programs, including WordStar and dBASE II continue to run, and 
  269. I have full ZCPR3 features.
  270.      Even  with this argument,  people will still ignore the vast 
  271. gains  in  functionality and capability offered by ZCPR3  and  Z-
  272. System  and concentrate on their single-minded fixation with  TPA 
  273. (for  reasons no one has adequately explained to me).   A  future 
  274. ZCPR3 release,  ZCPRB3, will offer a banked memory system with at 
  275. least a 60K TPA (now,  that should make them happy).  Note that I 
  276. am not moving to a banked system on their account,  but as a step 
  277. toward multitasking--something I really want.

  289.      The Z-System runs better on a hard disk...because everything 
  290. runs  better on a hard disk.  Also, a hard disk runs better on  a 
  291. Z-System  because of all the programs and features which  support 
  292. the hard disk:

  294.           Named directories with passwords
  295.           Public directories under ZRDOS+
  296.           Paths
  297.           Shells
  298.           Special commands, like CD (Change Directory)
  299.  
  300.      Most Z-System features are practical regardless of the  disk 
  301. used.
