Below are some possible essay topics suitable for VCE Level
questions on Lord of the Flies. Use these topics for revision
by writing or planning the essays and comparing your work with
that of a friend.
1. Discuss the idea that 'Lord of the Flies' gives a
pessimistic and depressing view of mankind.
2. Describe the events leading to the death of Simon and say
why this incident is of major importance in the book.
3. What have you learnt about human nature by reading and
studying 'Lord of the Flies'?

4. Trace the changing relationship between EITHER Ralph and
Jack OR Ralph and Piggy.
5. What do you think is the climax of the book? Justify your
choice and describe events leading up to the climax.
6. Choose one of the following settings. Describe at least
