  3. The island created by Golding is a complex one. It is seen as
  4. a real physical place and also as a symbol of our world.
  5. In Chapter One we find a good description of the geography of
  6. the island when Ralph Jack and Simon climb the mountain.
  7. In an effective image Golding portrays the island as a boat
  8. and significantly the 'boat' already seems to be moving astern
  9. a hint of the way the boys society will also regress into
  10. savagery.

  14. Later we find that the island has a 'friendly' and an
  15. 'unfriendly' side mirroring the real world - sometimes hostile
  16. sometimes helpful.

  18. Specific settings of importance to the novel are The Assembly
  19. Place and The Mountain and Castle Rock.

  21. The Assembly Place
  22. ------------------
  23. There is an excellent description of the Assembly Place at the
  24. beginning of Chapter Five so I will not describe it here.
  25. However you should be aware that like the conch the Assembly
  26. Place stands for democracy and an orderly way of doing things.
  27. As the novel progresses the meetings become more and more dis-
  28. orderly and finally nearly all of the boys desert this part of
  29. the island for the greater attraction of Castle Rock.

  31. A fruitful revision exercise is to trace the assemblies that
  32. are described (There are others mentioned). Ask yourself
  33. questions about them.
  34. E.g. Does Ralph make a mistake to call the night assembly? Who
  35. is present at the final assembly? etc.

  37. The Mountain
  38. ------------
  39. The mountain is another place that seems to turn against the
  40. boys as the novel progresses.
  41. At first it is a place of great hope where they light their
  42. fire that is the main chance for rescue.
  43. Later it becomes a place of fear when they believe the Beast
  44. has taken it over.

  46. Castle Rock
  47. -----------
  48. The appearance and the atmosphere of Castle Rock show clearly
  49. that it represents the disorder and evil in Man.
  50. Significantly Jack can only see its good side:
  51. What a place for a fort!
  52. While Ralph instinctively dislikes it:
  53. This is a rotten place.

  55. Their first exploration of the Rock is filled with fear of the
  56. unknown beast and it later becomes a place of terror when
  57. Piggy is killed there.
