  71.         The copyright owner,  E.  Neil Wagstaff, hereby permits anyone to 
  72.         copy the original FAMILY TIES master disk and to give the copy to

  98.         This  software  program was written for genealogists to  simplify 
  99.         their  work and this 'USERWARE' method of distribution  has  been 
  100.         chosen for the following reasons:
  101.         The author's belief that quality software should not be expensive.
  102.         Advertising,  wholesale  and retail distribution costs as well as 
  103.         the staff to market software is about 75% of the purchase price - 
  104.         so,  if  these  costs are minimal then the user can  obtain  good 
  105.         software at a low price.
  106.  
  107.         This experiment is not altruism on the part of the developer  but 
  108.         is based on the belief that everyone is basically honest and will 
  109.         be willing to pay a reasonable fee for a quality software program.  
  110.         The  fee  enables  the developer to provide user support  and  to 
  111.         continue adding more features and enhancements.

  113.         This  CP/M  version is the  pilot in this  marketing  experiment.  
  114.         Each  user who sends in their registration fee will be casting  a 
  115.         vote for more software to be marketed without copy protection and

  117.         this marketing method then future releases and updates of  FAMILY
  118.         TIES will be copy  protected and the price will increase to about
  119.         $150 to  cover  normal marketing costs - It's now in the hands of

  138.         FAMILY  TIES  Genealogy Program on your computer(s) in  a  single

  143.             download to your computer the latest version of FAMILY  TIES.

  270.                                  Getting started
  271.  
  272.         1.  First  install the program with FTINSTAL ( First time only )
  273.  
  274.         2.   Run the program with
  275.                   Program disc in drive A: (has CPM on it)
  276.                   Data    disc in drive B:
  277.         (Using a hard disk  you may have all the files on the same drive)

  279.         3.   Make  sure  that the default drive contains  the 
  280.              Program disc with 'PRINT.CTR' file
  281.         (Check by typing  DIR  and see if the file is present)
  282.  
  283.         4.   Enter  'FT'  (RETURN)    [do not type the '']
  284.              The  MAIN MENU is displayed.

  286.         5.   For the first person to be entered ONLY:
  287.  
  288.              Enter '2'  --  blank Family Group Sheet displayed
  289.              Enter 'E'  --  blank Edit screen displayed
  290.                         VERY IMPORTANT - the first record must be a MALE
  291.                         See end of 23rd line for sex of person being
  292.                         edited.  Start entry of Lastname

  294.         After the first person has been entered then males or females may 
  295.         be entered in ANY order.  Use S to create a spouse record.
  296.         Parents are not entered in the EDIT mode.  Use H (husb's parents) 
  297.         or W (wife's parents) in the Groupsheet mode and answer Y to add.

  300.         NOTE:   In  this program  (ESC) is used to denote the ESCAPE  key 
  301.         which  is  usually located upper left on the keyboard.  (RET)  or 
  302.         (RETURN) is the RETURN or ENTER key which is located middle right 
  303.         of the keyboard.

  305.                              I N T R O D U C T I O N
  306.  
  307.         The  FAMILY TIES Genealogy program is designed for the  organized 
  308.         compilation  of  personal genealogical information.  All  of  the 
  309.         names  entered  in this program are automaticaly linked  to  each 
  310.         other.   Starting with one individual (usually yourself) use  the 
  311.         edit mode to enter your information.  Then add a person linked to 
  312.         this first  individual eg. parents, spouse, other spouse or child 
  313.         and enter their information.
  314.  
  315.         Before  the FAMILY TIES Genealogical Program can be used for  the 
  316.         first  time  it will have to be installed for your  system.   The 
  317.         installation  process  will drastically change the files  on  the 
  318.         diskette  being  installed  so   NEVER   install your FAMILY TIES 
  319.         MASTER  DISKETTE (original disk).     Place a write  protect  tab
  320.         on the  MASTER.   Please do NOT remove it.

  333.         See the appendices at the end of the manual for computer specific
  334.         instructions.

  336.         Always make back-up copies of your programs.
  337.         Before  you do anything make 2 copies of the MASTER DISKETTE  and 
  338.         then put the MASTER away in a safe place.  
  339.  
  340.         Do  this by 
  341.         1. Formating (or initializing) 2 diskettes and copying 
  342.            CPM onto these disks to create system disks.  Use SYSGEN or the
  343.            program called COPY to do this.
  344.         2. Use SWEEP or PIP to copy the files from the MASTER.
  345.            Place a formatted system disk in drive A:
  346.            Place the MASTER in drive B:
  347.            Use one of the entries below
  348.  
  349.         For CPM enter      ^C                     {control + C}
  350.                            B:PIP A:=B:*.*[OV]    
  351.         {you MUST always use the parameters [OV] when using PIP on our files}
  352.         or run SWEEP and tag all the files.  Move them to the new disk.
  353.         3. Do this for both system disks.
  354.  
  355.         [NOTE: the files MUST be transfered one at a time from 
  356.         the MASTER - do NOT use a diskcopy program here as we supply copies
  357.         for computers with different capacity disks on the smallest common
  358.         format - you need to transfer to the largest capacity available]
  359.  
  360.         Place  the  ORIGINAL  MASTER DISKETTE away  now.   This  is  your 
  361.         insurance in case your MASTER COPY is damaged.
  362.         Label  one  of  the copies as a MASTER COPY  and  place  a  write 
  363.         protect tab on it.  This will be used to create any future FAMILY 
  364.         TIES databases you may need.  (see MULIPLE DATABASES)
  365.  
  366.         Use  the  second  un-installed copy to  create  your  FAMILY TIES 
  367.         database.  You will also  need a  blank  formatted  diskette  for
  368.         storing the data which will be used in drive B:.
  369.  
  370.     PROGRAM BACK-UPS                                         PROGRAM BACK-UPS
  371.  
  372.         If you have a program that will copy whole disks then use it  for 
  373.         making your BACK-UPS.
  374.  
  375.         It  is  very important that frequent back-ups be made as data  is 
  376.         added to the database.  If for any reason the data is lost (power 
  377.         loss,  diskette crash etc and these things will happen I promise) 
  378.         then  the  only  possible way to recover is to  go  back  to  the 
  379.         previous  back-up  copy and re-do all entries since then.   As  a 
  380.         rule  of  thumb;   BACK-UPS should be made when it  is  too  much 
  381.         trouble  to duplicate all the work since the last back-up.   Some 
  382.         will not make back-ups and Computer Services will NOT be able  to 
  383.         help recover lost data.

  385.         If the program crash occurs while in EDIT or NOTES then  back-ups 
  386.         MUST  be  used  as  record  links may  be  incomplete  if  a  new 
  387.         individual  has  just  been  added or the notes  have  just  been 
  388.         started.

  399.         One  method  of  backing up program data is to  have  3  sets  of 
  400.         rotating back-ups as shown below.
  401.  
  402.         Todays              This is todays work -  the regular
  403.         Current             program & data discs used for data
  404.         discs               entry etc.
  405.  
  406.         Latest              These are the most recent back-ups
  407.         back-ups            (rotated from the oldest).
  408.  
  409.         Intermediate        These will only be used if there
  410.         back-ups            is a catastrophe and the latest
  411.                             back-ups are lost.
  412.  
  413.         Oldest              These are the oldest back-ups and
  414.         back-ups            these diskettes will be reused to
  415.                             back-up todays work
  416.  
  417.         The  program keeps track of the next back-up set to be used.   If 
  418.         you answer 'Y' to the back-up question when you exit FAMILY  TIES 
  419.         the  next set # will be displayed.   The 3 back-up sets should be 
  420.         labeled 1,2 and 3. On one set of disc sleeves write 'LATEST BACK-
  421.         UP'  and always place the latest back-up set in them so  that  in 
  422.         the event of a crash you know which to use.
  423.  
  424.         NOTE: Data is written to 4 files on the disks.  These are called:
  425.                      DBNAME.DA1           DBNAME.DA5   
  426.                      DBNAME.DA4           DBNAME.NTS   
  427.  
  428.         where   DBNAME  is  the  database  name  specified  when  running 
  429.         FTINSTAL. These files are to be found on both the program and the 
  430.         data  disks  and  so both disks must be backed  up  at  the  same 
  431.         session.   If  there is ever any need to use a BACK-UP then use a 
  432.         PAIR of back-ups.   DO NOT use back-ups from different days under 
  433.         any circumstances as you will lose data.

  501.         The  forms  (Pedigree  & Family Group Sheet) are  131  characters 
  502.         across and 64 lines long.
  503.         NOTES are 80 characters across.
  504.            This program can print two formats:
  505.  
  506.         1.   Narrow              2.   Wide
  507.  
  508.         These each send different printer initialization codes  
  509.         The Install program is used to enter these codes.
  510.         Narrow:8 1/2 x 11 (Fgsh/Ped)  Needs codes to compress 131 
  511.                characters  into the paper width of 8 1/2" i.e. codes  for 
  512.                16 or 17 characters/inch and regular 6 lines/vertical inch.
  513.         (Notes)  have  only 80 characters to print on  each  line - enter 
  514.                codes to produce the normal 10 characters/inch.
  515.  
  516.         Wide: 14 x 8 1/2 (Fgsh/Ped) 64 lines have to be entered in 8 1/2" 
  517.               of  paper  height  and so the printer needs  codes  for  10 
  518.               characters/inch and 8 lines/vertical inch
  519.         (Notes)  8 1/2 x 8 1/2 high - Same as Fgsh/Ped

  533.         The program keeps track of the last 10 moves made in the database 
  534.         and  this  command allows movement back along this path.   It  is 
  535.         part of the jump command.  After entering J for a jump the prompt 
  536.         will ask for:

  540.         Entering a 'B' will cause a jump to the previous position; ie the 
  541.         last move is cancelled.

  546.              This  is  an  abbreviation for 'Born in  the  Covenant'  and 
  547.         refers to the L.D.S. church's temple ordinances.  B.I.C. can only 
  548.         be  entered  in  the edit mode of a Family  Group  Sheet  .   The 
  549.         section 'sealed to parents' has the option of a date,  a 9  digit 
  550.         temple code or B.I.C.  To enter B.I.C. press the letter 'B'. This 
  551.         will automatically print the word B.I.C.

  556.         This is used in the Family Group Sheet and edit modes and appears 
  557.         only in the L.D.S. version (the regular version is blank).

  559.              a:-in  the  form dd Mon yyyyc (where 'c' is  an  identifying 
  560.                 code-see CODES)
  561.              b:-using  the word 'Infant' for children who died before the 
  562.                 age of 8 (see Infant).

  567.              Child is a command code used in both the pedigree and Family 
  568.         Group Sheet.  It has a different function in each mode.
  569.              a.  Pedigree - Moves the eldest child of the base individual

  827.         baptisms, endowments and temple dates and codes that are of great 
  828.         interest  to Latter Day Saints).   LDS printouts do not show  the 
  829.         place  of  death of the children or their  record  number.   This 
  830.         space is used to print the LDS ordinance data.

  898.         cannot be split into two and,  once a record is added,  it cannot 
  899.         be deleted from the linkage chain.  
  900.              On  the  Family  Group Sheet of the link person  (those  who 
  901.         overlap each database) a comment could be placed in the NOTES  to 
  902.         indicate  the Record # and Database name where the individual  is 
  903.         also  located.   The Jump command provides a fast method to  find 
  904.         the record in the other family database.
  905.              Two  discs will contain the newly created data base and must 
  906.         always be kept in pairs.   Please label each disc very  carefully

  1034.         right margin.   The first time a Place is entered the county  and 
  1035.         state/country  will  be  requested.   Please use care  as  typing 
  1036.         errors cannot be changed once the spelling has been verified (you 
  1037.         can get out with ESC at any time before this)

  1455.     Memory CACHE as used in FAMILY TIES:
  1456.  
  1457.     This is the storage, in RAM memory, of names and places which have
  1458.     been read from disk.  Data can be obtained 100 times faster from
  1459.     RAM memory than from a disk so after a name or place is read from
  1460.     the disk, it is stored in memory for fast re-use.  Since only a
  1461.     small amount of memory is available under CPM there is a limit on
  1462.     the number of ITEMS (names/places) that can be stored.  When this 
  1463.     limit is reached then the item which has been least used will be
  1464.     discarded from memory to be replaced by a new name or place.
  1465.     The amount of memory available for CACHEing is determined by the
  1466.     TPA (Transient Program Area).  This is the amount of ram left after
  1467.     CPM has been loaded and is typically about 56K.  Some hard disk
  1468.     systems may have only 52K and MPM or Turbodos have about 48K.

  1470.     Four sizes of CACHE have been created to accomodate the various
  1471.     sizes of TPA.

  1569.         include up to 99 generations in these charts.  Now would be a good
  1570.         time to send in that registration form and become a legitimate user
