CAN YOU BREAK THE PROTECTION? by Terry Hill
Disk #157 contains two programs which illustrate a simple form of
protecting data by using passwords. If you have nothing better to do
on a rainy afternoon you might like to try to beat the protection. If
you do - and I'm sure that many of you clever people will - you might
like to let the editor know how you broke in -- or even write a better
system. If you are fairly clever and can't beat the system, please
drop a line to Terry Hill so he gets some feedback.
HELODERE needs a key created by PASSWORD to allow it to run. It also
expects to be on a disk which autoboots PASSWORD.
To play: initialise a disk to boot to the CCP with PASSWORD as the
initial command and copy CCP, PASSSWORD and HELODERE to it - you may
then do whatever you like.
PASSWORD needs an 8 character user name and an eight character
password. Before you give up in disgust - BOTH ARE VISIBLE AS
SCRAMBLED CONSTANT(S) if you use a disk editor (DISKPCH2 is my
favourite). This will not help you as much as knowing the user name is
what TERRY was christened and the password can be mistaken for a
synonym of `NUDE'.
If you successfully negotiate PASSWORD, HELODERE is unlocked.
If finding the username/password pair seems a little tedious, you
might like to test your hacking abilities. But make sure you keep a
copy of both programs on another disk - you never know what might
happen to the ones you are playing with.
The editor knows the magic words and has hidden them somewhere in the
CATCHER, for those of you who need them. (I sincerely hope everyone
needs them).
Seriously, though, many of us have files which we don't want open to
all and sundry, and need some way of keeping them private. If PASSWORD
and HELODERE are hard to get past, then LOGON.COM might be worth
using.
