STORY MAKER GRAPHIC FILE CONVERSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[ For Premium Microbees ONLY ]
My young kids enjoy using Story Maker as they can easily combine
graphics with text ( even then new Foundation font.) However, they soon
get tired of the same graphic pictures available. The picture files on
the Story Maker disk all have similar name ie. TOKENxx.GAL where xx is
any number between 00 and 62 inclusive. After studing the makeup of
these files I was able to determine how the picture date was save. It's
similar to Printmaster pictures except the data is stored for columns
rather than rows. Anyhow, I can now transfer Printmaster pictures and
Electric Paintbrush clipart to Story Maker (SM) files. Also, the
existing SM files can be converted to EP. I wrote the following programs
to do the above in Turbo Pascal.
EP2SM.COM
~~~~~~~~~
Load in the EP file containing the picture you wish to convert. Then
click the HAND icon and move to the required part of the file. Click
the CLIPBOARD icon (next to HAND) and move the cross to the upper left
corner of picture and click to mark. Now move the square th enclose the
picture and click to select. Click EDIT, click COPY then exit EP as
normal. Maximum size of this picture is approx. 1/4 of the screen, this
was saved as CLIPBRD.DAT . Now run EP2SM and give a number for the saved
file and there you have it. Do the above another 62 times to make a
complete set of new SM pics. The file GALLERY.FIL has 63 empty squares
numbered 00 top left hand corner and increase across each row. This is a
"16k Format File" as described in the Catcher Sept 88. Convert this to a
BeeArtistic file, edit it by drawing in little pics or use text. ( This
part you have to do yourself, I don't do everything!) Then convert it
back to a 16K Format file.
NOTE: One MAJOR problem. Normally you can select Large or Small pictures
when using SM. These newlly created pic files ONLY have LARGE option.
I havn't worked out how they get the Small option yet!
PM2SM.COM
~~~~~~~~~
For a PRINTMASTER picture to be converted to a Story Maker file, first
select the picture from a SLIB.SHP or ULIB.SHP file using the
editingprogram EDIT.COM (c) Tripple R and then save it and exit. It will
always be saved on A: drive ( or default drive) with the name ULIB.SHP.
A: drive must initially NOT have a file on it called ULIB.SHP as saving
will add to that file. We want a ULIB.SHP with only one picture
saved to it. Then run the PM2SM.COM program and it will produce a
file called CLIPBRD.DAT. This CLIPBRD.DAT file must be on the EP
disk. Run EP, click EDIT, click PASTE, position square and click.
It then appears on screen. Save file as normal. This might all be a
bit complicated and only converts one file at a time, but it works! I
have a Chalk Board to run EP and clip art is saved as CLIPBRD.DAT
only. Run by either:-
A>PM2SM <cr> - then enter TOKENxx.GAL file number
or A>PM2SM xx <cr> - where xx is TOKENxx.GAL file number
SM2EP
~~~~~
This file simply converts Story Maker files to Electric Paintbrush
files. Running this program simply produces a CLIPBRD.DAT file which is
then loaded into EP then usual way. Run by:-
A>SM2EP <cr> - then enter TOKENxx.GAL file number
or A>SM2EP FILENAME <cr>
These files all work well on my 128k Premium 'bee. I have not tested
them on a 256TC but see no problems. Let me know via the MBUG
Bulletin Board or SIG meetings if you have problems or questions.
NOTE: None of these programs check the disk to see if a file already
exists with the same name. When a file is created, it will over-write
any pre-existing file of the same name. The original file will then be
un-recoverable. You have been warned!
