  2. The improvement in human knowledge and survival potential
  3. following the invention of writing was immense.  There was also
  4. an improvement in self-reliance: It is possible to learn at least
  5. the basics of an art or a science from a book and not be
  6. dependent on the lucky accident that there is a nearby master
  7. craftsman to whom we may apprentice ourselves.

  10. viewed not only as a brilliant innovation but as a surpassing
  11. good for humanity.  I believe the same will be said of those who
  12. are today devising computers and programs at the edge of machine
  13. intelligence.  The next major structural development in human
  14. intelligence is likely to be a partnership between intelligent
  15. humans and intelligent machines (from The Dragons of Eden by Carl
