********************************************************************* Editorial PIPMAG, The Online C-128 CP/M Magazine from GEnie
As the PIP Online Magazine continues to grow, so does the quality of
our work. Several people have joined us in writing articles for the
third issue of PIP, with a more diverse topic selection. I must thank
the people who have encouraged me to continue this Online Magazine,
especially those who offer constructive suggestions, and of course the
people who took the time to submit articles (opps, almost forgot
Roxanne, one our helpers!).
Having been busy at the World Of Commodore Show, in Philadelphia, I
regret that I did not sit down and give you more information. For
those who did not catch my Show Notes, here, in GEnie (FlagShip RT
page 625;1) I will summerize who and what happened at this expensive
gathering. First thing I noticed was that the cost of food was about
the same as parking, and $10.00 for admission was steep. The Civic
Center bill must have been paid for in the first 10 minutes!! There
is just no excuse for this!!
While a large part of the floor space was taken up by Amigas, several
areas were for the C-128 and C-64. Commodore displayed their complete
line of hardware in the show's biggest booth, and it was nice to be
able to chat with several CBM gurus. CBM also had an area just for
software, called the Commodore Store, which was packed with both
people and software. Run, Twin Cities 128, and AMnews was prominent
along with several Software Distributers. Progressive Pereferials has
a new updated Bob's Term Pro that removes the dongle and other copy
protection in both 64 and 128 versions. Berkeley Softworks will be
releasing GEO Chart 64/128, Q-Disk now has included a CRC Check
program for the QBB Cartidge (see PIPMAG issue #2), Free Spirit's
SketchPAD 128 (80 col mode) can be mouse driven, and speaking of mice,
start looking for infra-red, cordless mice in the near future. It was
interesting to see plug in add-ons and software drivers demoed.
WordStar booting in 1.2 seconds from a Lt Kernal hard drive, Z3PLUS'
EASE (a point and shoot CP/M program) load instantly from a QBB Ram
Disk, Jiffy DOS cut disk access times in half on a '71 drive, and a
plug in 64K Video Ram board for the C-128. While I believe a picture
is worth a thousand words, a demo is worth a SOLD receipt!
Three items were strangely missing from the show: Basic 8, 1750 REUs,
and any new 8 bit products by Commodore <sigh>. Your guess is as good
as mine!
There will be several possible new additions for the C-128. One is
a full featured Terminal Program (native mode) that will rival Bob's
Term, and be able to write to CP/M disks, and an interface for CP/M
mode that will allow the C-128 to use multiple clone drives. While
there isn't any film at 11:00, more news in the next PIP.
Since this is a C-128 specific newsletter, I won't mention anything
about Apple entering the PC/FAX market with a $699 AppleFax modem
(resolution is 200 dots/inch).
Speaking of Apple, I am including a short Apple article that I think
you will find interesting.
**** NEWS FLASH ****
GEnie now has a CP/M Help Desk for C-128 users at 9:00PM eastern time
in room 4, page 625;2!! And don't forget the Wednesday night CP/M
Conference on page 685;2 at 10:00PM, eastern!!
**** NEWS FLASH II ****
Are we going to let Commodore kill the best drive that ever came out
of West Chester? That's right!! The 1571 is no longer being manufactured!
Join us for a discussion of this cruel treatment, or send me mail
with your ideas. I will soon be mounting a letter writing campaign to
stop this foolish behavior! Join me in defending the honor of the
8 bit Commodore Users!!
NEXT ISSUE:
The PIP will be publishing reviews on JIFFY DOS for native and CP/M
modes. Just how fast is it? Initial tests do show a speed-up for
disk access times in both modes, but read this review for information
about how to use it to your advantage.
Also, we answer the big question: How to save money reading all those
Messages on the GEnie Bulletin Boards!
And..... we will have several (finally) how to update your 28MAY87
CP/M plus disk to elliminate all those annoying, but still minor bugs.
Again I solicit articles, hints, tips, etc on C-128 (OK, 64 too!) in
Native or CP/M mode for the PIP. Please send submissions to me in
GEnie Mail, unformatted (no padded spaces from right justify), in
ASCII or PETSCII mode. While I don't get into CI$ much, for those who
don't have a GEnie account, you can contact me in EasyPlex:
74206,3310. GEnie mail is easier (and cheaper at 1200B): C128.CPM
Thanx again, Bill Juliani
