HINTS, TIPS, AND TRAPS FOR THE C-128 IN CP/M MODE
CP/M CRASHES: A FEW THINGS THAT A FEW OF US HAVE LEARNED TO PREVENT
CRASHES, DISK ERRORS, ETC:
HAVE YOUR COMPUTER PROPERLY GROUNDED!! OH, YOU'RE SURE? WHO SAYS
THAT THE GROUND (THIRD) PRONG IS CONNECTED TO A REAL GROUND?
NOTE: THE USE OF A SURGE PROTECTED POWER STRIP IS HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED.
PLUGGING ALL COMPUTER RELATED EQUIPMENT INTO THE SAME STRIP WILL
ASSURE GROUND CONTINUITY EVEN IF YOUR WALL OUTLET IS NOT PROPERLY
GROUNDED (THREE PRONG CONNECTED). THIS WILL PROTECT AGAINST SURGES AS
WELL AS INCORRECT POLARIZATION OF EQUIPMENT. THIS TIP COULD SAVE YOU
BIG $$$ AND LOTS OF LOST TIME.
WHEN NOT USING YOUR MODEM, TURN IT OFF!! BETTER YET DISCONNECT IT!
MANY PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED A CRASH AFTER ANSWERING A PHONE
(VOICE) CALL WHILE IN CP/M MODE. FOR THOSE OF YOU USING THE INFAMOUS
C=1670 MODEM BE AWARE THAT THE MODEM WILL ANSWER ALL INCOMING CALLS
WHETHER YOU WANT IT TOO OR NOT. ALSO, EVEN THOUGH YOU MAY HAVE A SURGE
PROTECTOR ON YOUR AC LINE, SURGES CAN STILL GET THROUGH TELEPHONE
LINES IN A BAD LIGHTNING STORM, AND CAN DO JUST AS MUCH DAMAGE TO YOU
COMPUTER. RS232 OR MODEM SURGE PROTECTORS ARE AVAILABLE. IT IS A GOOD
IDEA TO DISCONNECT YOUR MODEM FROM THE PHONE LINE IF YOU NOT GOING TO
BE USING IF FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.
WHEN SWITCHING FROM CBM TO CP/M MODE (OR VISA-VERSA) A COLD BOOT
(HITTING THE RESET BUTTON ON THE SIDE OF THE COMPUTER NEXT TO THE
ON/OFF SWITCH) SEEMS TO WORK BETTER THAN A WARM BOOT. IF YOU HAVE A
17XX RAM EXPANSION UNIT HITTING THE RESET BUTTON WILL ALLOW YOU TO
RETAIN THE CONTENTS OF THE REU SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO RELAOD IT EACH
TIME YOU BOOT YOUR CP/M SYSTEM. TURNING THE COMPUTER OFF WILL WIPE
OUT ALL MEMORY IN THE REU.
USING VDE OR W*:
IF YOU HAVE THE OLDER VERSION ROMS, YOUR CONTROL Q OR CAPITAL Q
MIGHT NOT PROPERLY DISPLAY, OR A CAPITAL Q <SHIFT> WILL DISPLAY A
DIRECTORY. USE THE COMMODORE KEY TO GET INTO CAPS MODE, HIT Q, AND
HIT THE C= KEY AGAIN TO RETURN TO UPPER/LOWER CASE.
