╔ WOULD LIKE TO SAY A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE ├OMMODORE 128, ╨OWER ╘ERM 128, AND
THE ╙HAREWARE CONCEPT.
╔ HAVE HEARD THE ├OMMODORE 128 REFERRED TO AS THE "╥OLLS ╥OYCE" OF 8-BIT
COMPUTERS. ╔ AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT 100%. ╔N CURRENT TIMES HOWEVER, THE
WORLD SEEMS TO BE GOING TOWARDS FASTER, MORE POWERFUL MACHINES. ╬OT ONCE DO
THEY CONSIDER THE MILLIONS OF USERS THAT CANNOT OR WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN
THIS RAT RACE TOWARDS THE ULTIMATE COMPUTING MACHINE. ╘HIS MAY BE BECAUSE OF
LOYALTY TO THEIR PRESENT COMPUTER, LACK OF FUNDS, REFUSAL TO GET CAUGHT UP IN
IT ALL, OR A COMBINATION OF SEVERAL REASONS. ╔F YOU ARE READING THIS, CHANCES
ARE THAT YOU FIT ONE OF THE MENTIONED CATEGORIES. ╔N MY OPINION, THE
├OMMODORE 128 IS AN OUTSTANDING COMPUTER THAT IS DYING FROM LACK OF SUPPORT.
╔ DIDN'T NECESSARILY WRITE ╨OWER ╘ERM 128 TO TRY TO RESOLVE THIS SITUATION.
╔NITIALLY, THE PURPOSE OF THIS TERM WAS TO "COMPLEMENT" A TELECOMMUNICATIONS
PACKAGE THAT WAS TO BE RELEASED COMMERCIALLY. ╠ATER, IT TURNED OUT THAT THE
TELECOMMUNICATIONS PACKAGE WAS GOING TO "COMPLEMENT" ╨OWER ╘ERM 128, STILL TO
BE RELEASED COMMERCIALLY. ─URING THE EIGHT MONTHS IT TOOK TO GET ╨OWER ╘ERM
128 TO THE LEVEL IT IS NOW, THINGS WENT AWRY. ┴S IS THE CASE SOMETIMES,
THINGS DON'T WORK OUT THE WAY THEY WERE ORIGINALLY PLANNED. ┴LTHOUGH THIS
TERM WILL NEVER BE RELEASED COMMERCIALLY, ╔ DECIDED IT WOULD BE A GREAT WASTE
TO LET IT SIT IN A DISK BOX JUST TO BE USED WHENEVER ╔ NEEDED IT.
═ANY TYPES OF COMPUTERS THRIVE ON BOTH COMMERCIAL AND PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE.
╫HY THEN, YOU MAY ASK, DOESN'T THIS HAPPEN IN THE ├OMMODORE 64 AND 128 MARKET?
╘HE ANSWER TO THAT IS BECAUSE THEIR SOFTWARE AUTHORS ARE REWARDED FOR THEIR
EFFORTS TO PROVIDE NEW, USEFUL SOFTWARE. ╘HE ╙HAREWARE CONCEPT IN MOST OTHER
COMPUTER COMMUNITIES WORKS FOR BOTH SIDES...THE USER AND THE PROGRAMMER. ╘HE
USERS APPRECIATE THE IDEA OF SENDING A SMALL DONATION TO A SOFTWARE AUTHOR,
WHO IN RETURN, WILL PROVIDE A BETTER; UPGRADED PRODUCT. ╘HE PROGRAMMER
APPRECIATES THE CONTRIBUTION IN RETURN, AS A COMPENSATION FOR THE EFFORT AND
TIME PLACED IN PRODUCING A QUALITY PROGRAM.
╬OW THAT YOU'RE THOROUGHLY DISGUSTED AT THE SUGGESTION OF SENDING MONEY TO
SOMEONE WHO WRITES THOSE "PUBLIC DOMAIN" PROGRAMS. ╘HOSE PEOPLE DO IT BECAUSE
IT IS THEIR HOBBY, RIGHT? ╫ELL, THAT'S THE ATTITUDE THAT MAKES PEOPLE STOP
UPGRADING THEIR CURRENT PROGRAMS, AND NOT WRITE ANY NEW ONES.
╘HE WHOLE POINT OF THIS PREFACE IS TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO SEND THAT CONTRIBUTION
FOR THAT ╙HAREWARE PROGRAM YOU USE ALL THE TIME; TO CONSIDER GIVING PAYMENT TO
THE AUTHOR, WHO IN ESSENCE, HAS SAVED YOU MORE MONEY THAN IS BEING ASKED FOR.
├ONSIDER THE COST OF THAT PROGRAM'S EQUIVALENT ON THE COMMERCIAL MARKET. ╔
GET DISCOURAGED WHEN ╔ DON'T SEE ANY NEW SOFTWARE BEING RELEASED FOR MY
├OMMODORE 128. ╔ WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS SITUATION CHANGE.
╔F THE COMPUTER SITTING IN FRONT OF YOU DIES BECAUSE OF LACK OF SUPPORT, WHOSE
FAULT IS IT? ╘HE SOFTWARE MAKERS? ╨ROBABLY NOT...

╔NCLUDED WITH THE ╨OWER ╘ERM 128 FILES IS A ┬┴╙╔├ PROGRAM CALLED "PHONEBK

CONVERT IT TO VERSION 2.0 FORMAT, SCRATCH THE OLD PHONEBOOK, AND FINALLY SAVE
THE NEW VERSION 2.0 PHONEBOOK. ╔T IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU RUN THIS FILE
┬┼╞╧╥┼ LOADING ╨OWER ╘ERM 2.0 FOR THE FIRST TIME. ╘HE PHONEBOOK FILE
(DFT.NUMBS) INCLUDED WITH VERSION 2.0 IS ALREADY IN VERSION 2.0 FORMAT.

╔T IS SUGGESTED THAT YOU MAKE AN ARCHIVAL BACK-UP OF THE ╨OWER ╘ERM 128 DISK
PRIOR TO THE INITIAL USE OF THE PROGRAM.
╠OADING ╨OWER ╘ERM 128 CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITH TWO METHODS:
O ╘URN ON YOUR DISK DRIVE, MONITOR, MODEM, AND COMPUTER. ╔NSERT THE '╨OWER

THE FOLLOWING LINE:
╥╒╬"╨╧╫┼╥ ╘┼╥═",╒(╪)
╙UBSTITUTE THE ╪ IN PARENTHESIS WITH THE DEVICE NUMBER OF THE DISK DRIVE
TO LOAD FROM.
╨OWER ╘ERM 128 WILL CHECK FOR THE PRESENCE OF A ╥AM ┼XPANSION ╒NIT WHEN
LOADED. ╔F YOU HAVE AN ATTACHED ╥┼╒, ├OMMODORE'S ╥AM─OS 128 ╥┴═ ─ISK DRIVER
WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY INSTALLED AS THE FIRST NON-EXISTENT SERIAL DEVICE ABOVE
DEVICE EIGHT. ╘HE ╥AM─OS FILE (RAMDOS128.BIN4.3) HAS BEEN RELEASED TO THE
PUBLIC DOMAIN, AND IS INCLUDED WITH ╨OWER ╘ERM 128. ╙UBSTITUTION OF A HIGHER
VERSION OF ╥AM─OS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY COPYING THE FILE "RAMDOS128.BIN*" TO
THE ╨OWER ╘ERM 128 DISK PRIOR TO LOADING THE TERMINAL.
┴LSO INCLUDED IS A PROGRAM CALLED '┬╧╧╘ ═┴╦┼╥ ╓2'. ╘HIS ┬┴╙╔├ PROGRAM CREATES
A ├OMMODORE 128/╨OWER ╘ERM 128 SELF-BOOTING DISK. ╘HIS FILE MAY BE USEFUL IN
THE EVENT OF THE BOOT SECTOR ON YOUR ╨OWER ╘ERM 128 DISK GETTING WRITTEN OVER
BY OTHER DATA. ┼NSURE THAT YOU RUN THIS FILE ON ╬┼╫╠┘ FORMATTED DISKS ONLY,
THEN FILE COPY ALL ╨OWER ╘ERM 128 FILES ONTO THE DISK.
