╔F YOU HAVE JUST DOWNLOADED NEZTERM 9.0 AND HAVE TRIED TO RUN IT, THEN YOU PROBABLY HAVE SEEN THE MESSAGE:
├╧╬╞╔╟ FILE NOT PRESENT:
╟O TO ├ONFIGURE ╙YSTEM ╞ILE ╙ECTION
╘HE CONFIGURATION FILE IS YOUR SET OF TAILORED COMMANDS FOR NEZTERM. ╘HE TERMINAL CAN BE RUN WITHOUT THE CONFIGURATION FILE, BUT MUCH OF THE POWER OF THE TERMINAL IS LOST WITHOUT YOUR CUSTOM FILE PRESENT. ╘HIS FILE CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:
1.╨ULSE OR ╘ONE DIALING(PULSE IS THE DEFAULT)
2.═ODEM COMMAND STRING - ╘HIS IS THE HAYES STRING THAT IS SENT TO THE MODEM
BEFORE EACH CALL. ╔T SETS SUCH THINGS AS VERBOSE/TERSE MODE, ECHO/NO ECHO,
TIME TO WAIT FOR CARRIER(CONSULT YOUR 1670 MANUEL FOR MORE INFORMATION).
╔ TESTED THIS TERMINAL USING A 1670 MODEM, AND HAVE SINCE HEARD FROM A
NUMBER OF PEOPLE USING OTHER 'HAYES COMPATABLE MODEMS', SAYING THAT THE
TERMINAL DOESN'T DIAL CORRECTLY. ╘HE MODEMS THAT ╔ HAVE HEARD THIS FROM
ARE:
1. VOLKSMODEM 1200
2. ┴VATEX 1200
3. SMARTTEAM 1200.
4. ? HELP OTHER USERS(REPORT THE MODEM COMMAND STRING THAT
WORKS FOR YOUR PARTICULAR MODEM)
╔F YOUR ARE EXPERIENCING AUTO-DIALER PROBLEMS, AND ARE USING ONE OF
THESE MODEMS, YOU CAN PROBABLY FIX THE PROBLEM BY CHANGING THE 'MODEM
COMMAND STRING'.(TYPICAL PROBLEM COMMANDS ARE:
1. NO 'S' REGISTERS (ESPECIALLY ┴╘╙0=ANSW ON NTH RING,
┴╘╙7=TIME TO WAIT FOR A CARRIER DETECTION
2. NO ┴╘╪1 , ┴╘═1 , ┴╘┼1 , ┴╘┌ , ┴╘╤1
3. ╘HE DEFAULT ESCAPE SEQUENCE IS ╬╧╘ '+++'
3.┬OARD NAME
4.┬OARD NUMBER
5.┬OARD BAUD RATE
6.╘HREE USER DEFINED PASSWORDS FOR EACH BOARD LISTING
7.╘ERMINAL COLORS
8.'CALL WAITING' DISABLE !!! ╔F YOU ─╧ ╬╧╘ HAVE 'CALL WAITING' LEAVE THIS
OPTION SET TO '┼╬┴┬╠┼─'. ╘HE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT TO DISABLE CALL
WAITING, AN EXTRA 3 CHARACTERS MUST BE DIALED(#70,,) AND A 4 SECOND DELAY
MUST BE ADDED TO THE DIALING TIME FOR THE PHONE COMPANY TO RESPOND TO THE
'CALL WAITING' DISABLE REQUEST. ╔ HAVE HEARD FROM A LOT OF PEOPLE SAYING
THAT THE AUTO DIALER DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY, AND 9 TIMES OUT OF TEN, THEY
─╧ ╬╧╘ HAVE CALL WAITING INSTALLED IN THEIR PHONE LINES, BUT HAVE THE
TERMINAL SET UP TO DISABLE CALL WAITING.
!! ╔F YOU DON'T HAVE 'CALL WAITING' , LEAVE 'CALL WAITING' - '┼╬┴┬╠┼─' !!
╘HE ADVANTAGE TO ENTERING ALL THIS INFORMATION FOR EACH BOARD IS THAT 300 AND 1200 BAUD BOARDS CAN BE INTERMIXED IN ONE DIAL LIST AND THE TERMINAL WILL AUTOMATICALLY SET THE TERMINAL SOFTWARE TO WHICH EVER BOARD IT HAPPENS TO CONNECT TO. ╘HE REASON FOR ENTERING PASSWORDS INTO THE CONFIGURATION FILE IS THAT WHEN THE TERMINAL SOFTWARE CONNECTS TO ANY OF THE BOARDS IN THE DIAL LIST, THE ├= 1, ├= 2, AND ├= 3 KEYS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE PROGRAMMED TO THE PROPER PASSWORDS, AND THE BAUDRATE WILL BE SET FOR THE PROPER BOARD.
═╧─┼═ ├╧══┴╬─ ╙╘╥╔╬╟
╘HE MODEM COMMAND STRING IS USEFUL IF YOU DO LONG DISTANCE DIALING(TO SET THE CARRIER WAIT TIME LONGER). ╔T IS ALSO USEFUL IF YOU ARE USING A MODEM THAT USES '┴╘' COMMANDS THAT ARE DIFFERENT THAN THE STANDARD 1670 'HAYES' COMMANDS. ╔F YOU ARE NOT SURE THAT YOUR MODEM USES THE SAME HAYES COMMANDS AS THE 1670, THEN GO TO TERMINAL MODE, PRESS <╞2> KEY, PRESS 'A', AND THE LIST OF 1670 'HAYES' COMMANDS WILL BE LISTED TO THE SCREEN. ├OMPARE THESE TO THE COMPARABLE COMMANDS THAT YOUR MODEM USES(THEY ARE USUALLY LISTED IN THE USER'S MANUEL). ╔F THEY ARE DIFFERENT, YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR 'MODEM COMMAND STRING' TO UNDERSTAND YOUR MODEM'S DIALECT OF HAYES COMMANDS.
╙┘╙╘┼═ ├╧╬╞╔╟╒╥┴╘╔╧╬ ╞╔╠┼
┴FTER YOU HAVE MADE YOUR INITIAL ├╧╬╞╔╟ FILE SAVE IT TO DISK FROM THE CONFIG SYSTEM FILE SCREEN. ┘OU WILL UNDOUBTEDLY WANT TO MAKE CHANGES FROM TIME TO TIME TO THIS FILE. ╘HIS CAN BE DONE EASILY BY GOING TO THE '╙┘╙╘┼═ ├╧╬╞╔╟╒╥┴╘╔╧╬' MENU OR THE 'EDIT PHONE LIST' OPTION OF THE CONFIG SYSTEM SCREEN. ─URING THE EDITING OF A PHONE ENTRY, ALL OF THE FORMER ENTRIES WILL BE RE-ENTERED IF A <RETURN> ALONE IS ENTERED(EXCEPT FOR THE BAUD RATE, IT WILL DEFAULT TO 1200 IF A <RETURN> ALONE IS ENTERED). ╔F YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH YOUR CHANGES, SAVE THE NEW CONFIG FILE TO THE DISK(YOUR PREVIOUS CONFIG FILE WILL BE SAVED UNDER THE NAME 'CONFIG.OLD', SO IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND ABOUT YOUR RECENT CHANGES, OR SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAPPENS, YOU STILL HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR LAST CONFIG FILE(BEFORE THE MOST RECENT SET OF CHANGES). ┬E SURE TO SAVE THE CONFIG FILE IF YOU WISH TO MAKE THEM PERMANENT. ╧THERWISE, THE NEW CHANGES WILL BE LOST WHEN YOU EXIT NEZTERM.
╘╚┼ ┴╒╘╧-─╔┴╠┼╥
╘HE DIALER HAS SOME UNIQUE FEATURES THAT MAY NOT BE APARRENT AT FIRST, THEY ARE:
<╨RESS <╞1> AT THE DIALER MENU FOR A QUICK RUNDOWN OF FEATURES>
1. ╒P TO 40 COMPLETE SETS OF PARAMETERS FOR BOARDS
2. ╒P TO 20 BOARDS CAN BE SET IN ANY DIALING ORDER AT ONE TIME
3. ╘HE DIAL LIST CAN BE CYCLED THROUGH THE DIALER FROM 1 TO CONTINOUS TIMES
4. ╘ELEPHONE NUMBERS CAN BE DIRECTLY ENTERED INTO THE CURRENT DIAL LIST
WITHOUT ENTERING THEM INTO THE INDEX LIST. ╘ELEPHONE NUMBERS CAN BE
INTERMIXED WITH INDEX NUMBERS IN THE SAME LIST. ╘ELEPHONE NUMBERS MUST
BE FROM 7 TO 11 DIGITS LONG. ╘HE CONNECT BAUD RATE OF TELEPHONE NUMBERS
WILL BE THE TERMINAL BAUD RATE AT THE TIME OF THEIR ENTRY INTO THE DIAL
LIST.
5. ┴FTER CONNECTING TO A BOARD, AND THEN LOGGING OFF, A FORMER DIAL LIST(OR
ANY PART OF IT CAN BE RESTORED) THEN REDIALED. ╘HIS SAVES TIME OF
RE-ENTERING ALL THE NUMBERS OF THE LAST DIAL LIST. ╘HIS IS DONE BY
ENTERING A '0' AT EACH PROMPT THAT YOU WANT TO RESTORE THE OLD NUMBER
TO. ╔F THERE IS NO FORMER NUMBER, YOU WILL BE PROMPTED TO THIS, AND YOU
CAN EITHER START DIALING, OR ENTER A NEW NUMBER.
(╥ AT THE PROMPT WILL RESTORE THE FULL LIST, MINUS ANY 'CONNECTED TO'
BOARDS, AND START THE DIALING AUTOMATICALLY)
6. ┴T ANY POINT DURING THE NUMBER ENTRY OR DIALING PROCESS YOU CAN EXIT TO
THE MAIN MENU BY ENTERING A SERIES OF <ESC> KEYS(THE NUMBER OF <ESC>'S
IS DEPENDENT ON YOUR POINT IN THE PROGRAM.
7. ┴ <RETURN> ALONE AT A DIALER ENTRY PROMPT WILL EXIT THE NUMBER ENTRY
MODE AND GO TO THE DIALER MODE.
8. ┴T THE 'CYCLES THROUGH LIST' YOU CAN ENTER ANY NUMBER FROM 1 TO
CONTINOUS(<RETURN>).
9. ╒PON DETECTING A CARRIER, THE TERMINAL WILL AUTOMATICALLY EXIT THE
DIALER MODE AND ENTER THE TERMINAL MODE.
╚┴┘┼╙ ┴╘ ├╧══┴╬─╙
╚AYES ┴╘ COMMANDS CAN BE ENTERED DIRECTLY TO THE MODEM FROM THE TERMINAL SCREEN. ╘HE ONLY RESTRICTION IS THAT YOU MUST ╬╧╘ BE CONNECTED TO A BOARD OR ANOTHER COMPUTER AT THE TIME YOU SEND THE ┴╘ COMMAND. ╘HIS IS SO BECAUSE THE MODEM WOULD GET CONFUSED BY CONVERSATIONAL TEXT IF IT WERE ALLOWED TO LISTEN FOR ┴╘ COMMANDS WHILE CONNECTED.
╘HIS AFFORDS THE ADVANTAGE OF USING THE TERMINAL AS A SORT OF MINI-BBS. ╘HIS CAN BE DONE BY GOING TO TERMINAL MODE, THEN ENTERING:
╘OGGLE ╞3 TO THE DESIRED BAUDRATE
┴╘┼1 (ALLOWS ECHO TO THE SCREEN)
╧╦ (WILL BE IT'S RESPONSE)
┴╘╙0=1 (THIS TELLS IT TO ANSWER ON THE FIRST RING)
╧╦ (WILL BE IT'S RESPONSE)
╫HEN THE PHONE RINGS, THE MODEM WILL CONNECT TO THE CALLER, AND YOU CAN THEN CARRY ON A CONVERSATION, OR TRANSFER FILES.
╔F YOU HAVE BEEN ONLINE, AND WANT TO DO SOME DISK ACCESSES, OR READ THE BUFFER, OR WHATEVER, AND DON'T WANT TO BE INTERRUPTED BY INCOMING CALLS YOU CAN DISABLE THE MODEM BY:
GO TO TERMINAL MODE
┴╘╙0=0 (NO ANSWER OF THE PHONE)
╘HIS WILL DIASBLE THE MODEM FROM ANSWERING THE PHONE.
╔F YOU HAVE BEEN CARRING ON A VOICE CONVERSATION, AND THEN WANT TO GO MODEM TO MODEM WITHOUT HANGING UP AND THEN CALLING EACH OTHER BACK BY COMPUTER YOU CAN:
GO TO TERMINAL MODE
┴╘┴ (ANSWER MODE WITHOUT A RING)
┴LL HAYES COMMANDS CAN BE ENTERED FROM TERMINAL MODE.
╨╥╧┬╠┼═ ┴╥┼┴╙
═OST COMPLAINTS THAT ╔ HEAR OF ARE:
1. ╔ JUST DOWNLOADED THE TERMINAL AND IT DOESN'T DIAL PROPERLY, BY THE WAY ╔ USE A ??? MODEM.
╘HIS IS USUALLY CAUSED BY A DIFFERENCES IN HAYES COMMANDS BETWEEN DIFFERENT BRANDS OF MODEMS. ╔ USED A COMMODORE 1670 MODEM TO MAKE THIS VERSION. ├ONCENTRATE ON TAYLORING THE 'MODEM COMMAND STRING' TO YOUR MODEM.
2. ╫HEN ╔ GO TO AUTO-DIAL, THE DIALER BEGINS TO DIAL, THEN JUST STOPS. ┬Y THE WAY, IT PRINTS A *70(#70 IS A MISTAKE) TO THE SCREEN JUST BEFORE IT QUITS DIALING.
┘OU ARE TRYING TO DISABLE 'CALL WAITING'. ╔F YOU HAVE CALL WAITING, AND NEED TO DISABLE IT SO THAT YOUR MODEM LINK WON'T BE INTERRUPTED BY INCOMING CALLS. ╘HEN YOU WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH THIS 4 SECOND DELAY BEFORE EACH CALL OUT. ╘HIS IS THE TIME IT TAKES MOST PHONE COMPANIES TO RESPOND TO A CALL WAITING DISABLE REQUEST. ╔F YOU DON'T HAVE CALL WAITING FEATURE ON YOUR PHONE, LEAVE THIS FEATURE 'ENABLED'.
3. ╫HEN ╔ UPLOAD TO A BOARD USING XMODEM PROTOCOL, ╔ GET A LOT OF BLOCKS THAT NEED TO BE RE-SENT.
╘HIS IS STILL A BUG IN THE SOFTWARE. ╔T ISN'T WAITING LONG ENOUGH FOR THE ┴├╦ FROM THE RECEIVER TO SEND THE NEXT BLOCK. ┴S A RESULT, THE RECEIVER DOESNT GET THE FULL RECORD NUMBER. ┴S A RESULT, THE BLOCK HAS TO BE RESENT. ╘HE ERRORS WILL ALL BE CAUGHT, AND THE BLOCKS RESENT IF NEEDED. ╘HE INTEGRITY OF THE FILE WILL BE MAINTAINED, THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE FILE WILL TAKE LONGER THAN NORMAL TO SEND. ╘HE REASON THAT THIS BUG IS STILL IN THE SOFTWARE IS THAT ╔ HAVEN'T FOUND ANYONE YET WHO IS WILLING TO LET ME UPLOAD XMODEM TO THEM UNTIL ╔ GET THE DELAY TIME SET CORRECTLY. ╔F ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN THIS PROBLEM, DROP ME A NOTE.
(BY THE WAY, XMODEM ONLY SUPPORTS CHECKSUM, NO CRC)
4. ╫HEN ╔ DOWNLOAD A TEXT FILE FROM AN XMODEM BOARD, USING XMODEM IT LOOKS FUNNY ON A WORDPROCESSOR(UPPER AND LOWERCASE LETTERS ARE REVERSED AND A LOT OF STRANGE GRAPHICS CHARACTERS INSERTED).
╘HIS IS BECAUSE COMMODORE USES PET-ASCII AND MOST XMODEM BOARDS USE TRUE ASCII. ╘HIS IS NOT A PROBLEM WHEN YOU 'CAPTURE' TEXT IN YOUR BUFFER BECAUSE THE TERMINAL HAS A BUILT IN TRUE-ASCII TO PET-ASCII CONVERTER FOR CAPTURED TEXT. ╘HE PROBLEM INVOLVES DOWNLOADING USING XMODEM. ┬ECAUSE IT IS AN ERROR CHECKING PROTOCOL, THERE SHOULD BE NO CHANGES MADE TO THE INFORMATION, OTHERWISE THE INTEGRITY OF THE INFORMATION WOULD BE LOST. ┬UT SINCE MOST XMODEM BOARDS' TEXT FILES WILL BE IN TRUE ASCII, THIS ALLOWS FILES TO BYPASS THE TRUE-ASCII TO PET-ASCII CONVERTER. ┬ECAUSE OF THIS, WHEN YOU TRY TO VIEW THE FILE WITH A WORDPROCESSOR, THE TEXT WILL BE MIS-INTERPRETED AS PET-ASCII. ╘HIS IS MORE A PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE SOLVED BY A FILE CONVERTER THAN A TERMINAL. ┴ND ╔ HAVE WRITTEN A FILE CONVERTER FOR MY OWN USE TO DO JUST THAT. ╔F ANYONE WANTS IT, DROP ME A NOTE AND ╔ WILL UPLOAD IT.
5. ╘HE AUTO-DIALER DOESN'T WAIT LONG ENOUGH FOR THE OTHER BOARD TO ANSWER.
╘HE ╙7=12 IN THE 'MODEM COMMAND STRING' IS NOT LARGE ENOUGH, TRY ╙7=14
6. ╔ CAN'T GET THE CONFIG PHONE LIST TO ACCEPT PAUSES IN THE PHONE NUMBERS.
╨AUSES CAN ONLY BE USED IN THE DIAL LIST, AND CAN'T BE SAVED INTO THE CONFIG PHONE LIST AT PRESENT. ╘HE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT COMMA'S ARE SEEN IN A SEQUENTIAL FILE AS DELIMITERS. ─ELIMITERS ARE WHAT THE SEQ FILE SEPARATES ENTRIES IN A FILE WITH. ╔F YOU ├╧╒╠─ ENTER THEM IN THE CONFIG PHONE LIST, THEY WOULD THROW OFF ALL OF THE CONFIG ENTERIES AFTER THE FIRST NUMBER USING A COMMA IN IT. ╔ HAD INTENDED TO CHANGE THIS TO READ THE NUMBER BEFORE IT WAS ENTERED INTO THE CONFIG FILE, AND SUBSTITUTE ANY COMMAS TO A MORE BENIGN CHARACTER, THEN UPON READING THE CONFIG FILE, CONVERTING THEM BACK TO COMMA'S. ┬UT ╔ FOUND THAT ╔ DIDN'T NEED ANY PAUSES FOR MY CALLS, AND IT WOULD UNNECCESSARILY SLOW DOWN THE READING AND WRITING OF THE CONFIG FILE THAT ╔ ABANDON THE IDEA. ┬UT ANYONE THAT HAS AN INTEREST IN THIS, DROP ME A NOTE, AND ╔ WILL BE GLAD TO ADD SOME IDEAS AS TO HOW IT CAN BE DONE.
7. ╙OMETIMES INSTEAD OF THE DIALER SAYING 'NO CARRIER' WHEN THERE IS NO ANSWER ╔ GET SOMETHING LIKE '9#" 1O CARRIER'.
╫HEN YOU ARE IN THE AUTO-DIALER MODE, AUTO-DIALING. ┘OU WILL SEE SOMETHING LIKE:
┴╘─╨5551234
NO CARRIER
╘HESE ARE NOT GENERATED BY THE PROGRAM, THEY ARE RETURNS FROM THE MODEM AND ARE A CLUE AS TO WHAT IS WRONG IF YOUR TERMINAL IS DIALING UNSUCCCESSFULLY. ╘HE ┴╘─╨5551234 IS THE NUMBER THAT THE MODEM RECEIVED FROM THE SOFTWARE AND IS CURRENTLY TRYING TO DIAL. ╔F IT IS NOT WHAT IT SHOULD BE EITHER THE MODEM IS NOT GETTING THE PROPER NUMBER, OR IT IS INTERPRETING IT INCORRECTLY. ╔N THE
'NO CARRIER', THE 'N' IS FROM THE MODEM AND IS SAYING THAT IT HAS WAITED THE ALLOTTED TIME SPECIFIED BY ╙7 AND IN THAT TIME IT HAS DETECTED NO CARRIER. ╔F YOU HEAR A CARRIER ON THE LINE AND STILL GET A 'NO CARRIER' YOU HAVE SOME HAYES INCOMPATABILITIES MOST LIKELY.
╘HE '9#" 1O CARRIER' IS A SPECIAL CASE, IT MEANS THAT THE LINE CONNECTED, BUT THERE WAS NO CARRIER DETECTED. ╘HIS SOMETIMES MEANS THAT A HUMAN MAY BE ON THE OTHER END OF THE LINE CUSSING YOU OUT FOR DIALING HIS VOICE PHONE. ╔F YOU SEE THIS RESPONSE, YOU SHOULD LIFT THE PHONE AND SEE IF SOMEONE IS ON THE LINE. ╧R IT COULD JUST BE THAT THE BOARD THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO CALLS' SOFTWARE HAS CRASHED AND IT ISN'T ANSWERING THE PHONE PROPERLY.
8. ╫HAT DO ╔ DO WHEN ╔ WANT THE TERMINAL TO STOP WHAT IT IS DOING. ╚┼╠╨!
╘HE <┼╙├> KEY WILL GET YOU OUT OF ALMOST ANY TROUBLE. ╔F YOU GET LOST AND WANT TO BACKOUT TO SAFE GROUND JUST KEEP HITTING THE <┼╙├> AND YOU WILL USUALLY END UP AT THE MAIN MENU.
9. ╚ELP SCREENS ARE AVAILABLE WHILE USING THE TERMINAL
┴UTO-DIALER MODE - <╞1>
╘ERMINAL MODE - <╞2>
10. ╚OW DO ╔ GET IT TO UPLOAD, DOWNLOAD OR VIEW THE BUFFER.
╔N EARLIER VERSIONS OF ╬EZTERM, THESE USED TO BE OPTIONS AVAILABLE ONLY FROM THE MAIN MENU. ┬UT ╔ NOTICED THAT THE ONLY TIME THAT ╔ USED THEM WAS FROM THE TERMINAL MODE. ╔ THOUGHT THAT IT WAS AN INCONVENIENCE TO HAVE TO EXIT TERMINAL MODE TO ACCESS THEM. ╙O IN THIS VERSION, ALL UP/DOWNLOADING FEATURES ARE AVAILABLE FROM A SEPARATE SUB-MENU THAT IS CALLED FROM THE TERMINAL MODE BY PRESSING THE <╘┴┬> KEY. ┴LSO ALL BUFFER UTILITIES CAN BE ACCESSED FROM EITHER THE TERMINAL MODE<╞6> OR FROM THE MAIN MENU MODE (THEY ARE ALSO IN A SEPARATE SUB-MENU).
(┴LL DISK UTILITIES CAN BE ACCESSED FROM TERMINAL MODE WITH <╞4>)
11. ╔ HAVE A ??? MODEM AND IT DOESN'T HAVE THE ╙7 REGISTER, SO ╔ DELETED THE ╙7=12 FROM THE 'MODEM COMMAND STRING'. ╫HEN ╔ AUTO-DIAL, THE TERMINAL DOESN'T WAIT AT ALL TO LISTEN FOR A CARRIER, IT JUST GOES ON AND DIALS THE NEXT NUMBER IN THE LIST.
╘HE ╙7=12 SERVES TWO PURPOSES IN THE SOFTWARE. ╘HE FIRST IS TO TELL THE MODEM HOW LONG TO LISTEN FOR A CARRIER, BUT THE SECOND PURPOSE IS TO TELL THE SOFTWARE HOW LONG TO WAIT FOR THE MODEM TO GIVE A CARRIER DETECT SIGNAL. ╔T IS DONE IN THE SOFTWARE BY TAKING THE LAST 2 CHARACTERS OF THE 'MODEM COMMAND STRING', CONVERTING THEM TO A NUMBER, AND INSERTING THEM INTO AN EQUATION THAT CALCULATES THE WAIT TIME FOR THE SOFTWARE. ┬ECAUSE OF THIS, THE LAST TWO CHARACTERS OF THE 'MODEM COMMAND STRING' ═╒╙╘ BE NUMBERS, AND THEY SHOULD BE IN THE RANGE OF 12.
╘HIS ALSO BRINGS UP ANOTHER POINT. ╔F YOU CUSTOMIZE THE MODEM COMMAND STRING, THE ╙7=12 ═╒╙╘ CONTINUE TO BE THE LAST COMAND IN THE STRING. ╔F NOT THE SOFTWARE DELAY WILL TRY TO CALCULATE THE DELAY FROM A STRING OF ASCII CHARACTERS. ╘HIS WILL GIVE UNPREDICTABLE RESULTS.
(EXAMPLES)
┴╘╓1╪1╙7=15 (ACCEPTABLE)
┴╘╓1╙7=15╙0=5╪1 (WILL GIVE UNPREDICTABLE RESULTS)
┴╘╓1╪1╙7=15╙0=5 (WILL GIVE INCORRECT AND UNPREDICTABLE RESULTS)
┴╘┌┼0═0 (WILL GIVE NO SOFTWARE DELAY AT ALL)
┴╘┌┼0═012 (ACCEPTABLE)
┴ WORD TO LIVE BY IS, IF IT DOESN'T ╬┼┼─ TO BE CHANGED, DON'T CHANGE IT. ╘HAT MAY SOUND RUDE, ╔ DON'T MEAN IT TO. ╫HAT ╔ MEAN TO SAY IS, TRY THE TERMINAL FIRST WITH THE DEFAULT SETTINGS. ╔F IT DOESN'T WORK CORRECTLY 'OUT OF THE BOX', THEN YOU SHOULD ASK THESE QUESTIONS BEFORE 'DIGGING INTO' THE BASIC.
1. IS THE C-128 IN 80 COLUMN MODE?
2. IS THE C-128 CONNECTED TO AN 80 COLUMN MONITOR?
3. HAVE ╔ SAVED OFF A CONFIG FILE YET?
4. AM ╔ USING A 1571 DISK DRIVE, IF NOT SOME DISK COMMANDS ARE NOT
VALID?
5. DO ╔ HAVE CALL WAITING? AND DO ╔ WANT IT DISABLED?
6. AM ╔ USING A 1670? ╔F NOT, WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN '┴╘' COMMANDS
BETWEEN MINE AND THE 1670?
7. NO PIECE OF SOFTWARE IS COMPLETELY BUG FREE, AND ╔ AM SURE THAT
THERE ARE STILL BUGS IN THIS TERMINAL. ┴ND THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO
SHOW UP WHEN USERS OTHER THAN THE WRITER ARE USING THE SOFTWARE.
┴ND WHEN USERS USE DIFFERENT HARDWARE THAN IT WAS WRITTEN ON. ┬UT
BEFORE YOU GET TO THE POINT OF DELETING LINES, CHANGING LINES OR
BYPASSING SECTIONS OF BASIC, TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE ╞╒╠╠
IMPLICATIONS OF THE CHANGES THAT YOU ARE MAKING. ╘HE BASIC PORTION
OF THE TERMINAL IS FAIRLY COMPLEX, SOME VARIABLES ARE LOCAL TO THE
SUBROUTINE THAT THEY ARE USED IN, AND SOME ARE GLOBAL TO OTHER
SEEMINGLY UNRELATED SECTIONS OF THE PROGRAM. ╔ SUGGEST THAT BEFORE
YOU START MAKING ANY CHANGES TO THE TERMINAL YOU SHOULD USE THE
PROGRAM '╪╥┼╞ 128' TO GET A LISTING OF WHERE ALL LINES ARE CALLED
FROM AND WHERE ALL VARIABLES ARE CALLED AND USED FROM.
12. ╔F ╔ AM IN TERMINAL MODE, AND USE <╞2>HELP, THEN USE EITHER <╞4>DISK UTILITIES, OR <╞6>BUFFER UTILITIES, THE MENU IS PRINTED ON TOP OF THE HELP SCREEN.
╘HIS IS A BUG THAT SLIPPED BY ON THIS REV. ╘O FIX IT, LIST THE BASIC, AND AROUND LINE 1240 THERE WILL BE A LINE THAT STARTS OUT 'PRINTTAB(15)"PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE...". ╧N THIS LINE, BETWEEN THE 'GETKEY' AND ':IFA$'. ╔NSERT THE FOLLOWING ':PRINT"CLR/HOME"'. ─ON'T TYPE CLR/HOME, PRESS THE 'SHIFT CLEAR/HOME' KEY. ╘HIS WILL CLEAR THE HELP SCREEN AFTER YOU ARE THROUGH LOOKING AT IT, AND LEAVE IT BLANK SCREEN FOR THE PRINTING OF THE MENU SCREENS. (╠IKE ╔ SAID, ╬╧ SOFTWARE IS FREE OF BUGS, SORRY ABOUT THAT).
13. ╘HE CALL WAITING DOESN'T WORK. ╫HAT'S WRONG?
╘HE PERSON WHO RESPONDED THAT THE '#70' WAS INCORRECT AND SHOULD BE '*70' IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. ╔T SHOULD BE '*70'. ╔ HAVE SINCE FOUND THAT '1170' CAN BE SUBSTITUTED FOR THOSE WHO HAVE PULSE DIALING ONLY. ╘HE REASON FOR THIS SLIPUP IS THAT ╔ WAS ASKED TO INCLUDE THIS FEATURE, AND NO ONE IN MY AREA HAD CALL WAITING TO TRY IT OUT.(THANKS TO THE PERSON THAT RESPONDED TO THIS).
14. ╔ AM TRYING DIRECT DIAL ╨LUTO VIA VOYAGEUR, AND NEED A 25 DIGIT PHONE LIST.
═OST PEOPLE DON'T NEED THAT MANY DIGITS IN THERE PHONE NUMBERS, SO ╔ THINK THAT IT IS UNNECESSARY TO CHANGE THE TERMINAL FOR THIS MOD. ┬UT IF YOU ARE REALLY CALLING THAT FAR FROM HOME, ╔ THINK THAT 11 DIGITS WAS JUST AN ARBITRARY VALUE SET ON MY PART. ╘HE ONLY AREAS THAT MIGHT CAUSE TROUBLE BY ENLARGING THAT NUMBER MIGHT BE IN THE DIALER SECTION, THE CONFIG READER/WRITER OR THE MAXIMUM SIZE FOR A VARIABLE STRING. ═AKING NUMBERS THIS LARGE WILL BLOAT THE SIZE OF YOUR CONFIG FILE, AND CONSEQUENTLY SLOW THE READING, WRITING AND LOADING OF THE CONFIG FILE.
╔╬ ├╧╬├╠╒╙╔╧╬
╔ WOULD JUST LIKE TO THANK ┬ILL ╬ESBITT FOR PUTTING THIS TERMINAL INTO PUBLIC DOMAIN, AND TO INVITE ANYONE ELSE TO CONTINUE TO ADD THOSE THINGS THAT ARE STILL MISSING FROM IT. ╙OME OF THE THINGS THAT ╔ WOULD STILL LIKE TO SEE ADDED ARE:
BUFFER EDITOR
PET-ASCII TO TRUE ASCII FILE CONVERTER
TRUE ASCII TO PET-ASCII " "
XMODEM(CRC)
FULL KEYBOARD INTERPRETATION(LIKE UP-CURSOR AND GRAPHICS CHARS)
PROGRAMMABLE STOP BITS, WORD SIZE AND PARITY
AND ╔ GUESS WHILE ╔ AM DREAMING,
KERMIT PROTOCOL AND LYNXING, ARCING AND LIBRARING FROM WITHIN TERMINAL
MODE WOULD ABOUT COMPLETE IT.
═AYBE SOMEONE WITH ONE OF C-128 COMPILERS WOULD BE KIND ENOUGH TO COMPILE THIS TERMINAL AND RE-UPLOAD FOR THE REST OF US POR' FOLK.
╞OR THOSE WHO FIND BUGS, OR FIXES TO BUGS , MORE QUESTIONS OR JUST INFORMATION THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE ADDED TO THIS FILE, DROP ME A NOTE, AND ╔ WILL ADD THAT INFORMATION TO THIS HELP FILE.
