  22. Every red-blooded personal computer user has had at least a
  23. momentary flirtation with the seductive advances of the 286
  24. chip, and her younger, even racier sister, Miss 386.
  25.  
  26. Even those of us who have stubbornly clung to our faithful,
  27. durable CP/M Kaypros, steadfastly resisting the wanton charms
  28. of the swelling horde of camp-following IBM clones, have gone
  29. a little weak in the knees at the potential speed (6 to 16MHz)
  30. and potential memory (1 to 16 megabytes) of the latest DOS
  31. chips.

  33. But just when the most conservative of the CP/M Kaypro users
  34. thought it might be worth the risk to take a little fling with
  35. DOS, comes the news of a revolutionary CP/M enhancement which
  36. can give our faded, reliable old Kaypro's not only a face-lift
  37. but a complete make-over.

  39. Suppose that you could have the CP/M equivalent of a turbo-
  40. charged AT under the hood of your Kaypro...

  94. except it will now run at 12MHz instead of 4, with no memory

  104. At the heart of the ULTRABOARD is Zilog's new Z280
  105. microprocessor, the release of which has just been announced.
  106. High Tech Research has been a Z280 Beta Tester for Zilog.  The
  107. Z280 is the downwardly-compatible latest generation of the Z80
  108. series chip, the processor that drives the CP/M Kaypros.
  109. Zilog has spent more than four years in the development of the
  110. Z280.

  112. Among its' features the Z280 chip
  113. - is designed for CMOS low power operations.
  114. - contains an enhanced Z80 CPU instruction set that maintains
  115.   object code compatibility with the Z80 microprocessor.
  116. - adds 45 additional instructions to the Z80 CPU instruction
  117.   set.
  118. - includes a 3 stage pipe-lined 16-bit CPU architecture, with
  119.   both user and system modes.
  120. - contains direct co-processor and multi-processor interface
  121.   support.
  122. - includes an on-chip paged memory management unit (MMU)
  123.   that addresses up to 16 megabytes.
  124. - includes an on-chip 256 byte instruction and/or data
  125.   associative cache memory with burst load.
  126. - contains 3 on-chip 16-bit counter/timers.
  127. - contains 4 on-chip direct memory access (DMA) channels.
  128. - includes an on-chip full duplex UART (serial I/O.)
  129. - includes a built-in refresh controller for dynamic RAMS.
  130. - contains an on-chip oscillator with a 20-50MHz oscillator
  131.   clock frequency.

  133. The ULTRABOARD's Z280 on-board Cache Memory automatically
  134. stores all recently used instructions and/or data, so the
  135. processor has instant access to them for memory fetches, and
  136. subsequent disk and memory accesses are eliminated.  On chip
  137. Cache Memory can reduce bus transactions by a much as 75%.
  138.  
  139. The ULTRABOARD's Z280 Instruction Pipeline functions like
  140. three co-processors built into a single chip, internally
  141. processing multiple instructions.  While the first processor
  142. is handling one instruction, processors two and three are
  143. simultaneously working on the next two instructions.
  144. Pipelining contributes dramatically to the ULTRABOARD's
  145. improved processing speed.
  146.  
  147. The wizards at High Tech Research even had to replace the
  148. Kaypro screen driver so the screen could keep up with the
  149. Z280's phenomenal processing speed.  The ULTRABOARD includes a
  150. new 18MHz no-wait-state graphics screen driver, with its' own
  151. 256 byte Cache Memory for virtually instantaneous screen
  152. updates, 25 TIMES FASTER THAN YOUR CURRENT SCREEN.  No more
  153. waiting for the screen to catch up with your programs.
  154.  
  155. The new screen driver comes with an RGB connector so you can
  156. attach an external color monitor to your Kaypro and select
  157. your own display colors.  You can even design your own
  158. character sets, and switch between them and the standard
  159. Kaypro character set.  The Graphics chip set (GKS) on the
  160. ULTRABOARD contains a subset of the new GKS Standard (whatever
  161. that means.)

  163. The ULTRABOARD comes populated with 1 megabyte of RAM,
  164. expandable to a maximum of 16 megabytes.  That's the memory
  165. equivalent of 48 double-sided, double-density floppy disks.
  166. In RAM!  Gone forever are the 64k CP/M memory limitations for
  167. spreadsheets and databases.
  168.  
  169. The ULTRABOARD has a 1 megabyte ROM capacity, making a number
  170. of resident applications possible.  Imagine WordStar, for
  171. example, as a ROM resident program, able to be accessed from
  172. within any other program.  A modified version of Advent
  173. Products TurboROM is included in the ULTRABOARD.
  174.  
  175. The ULTRABOARD supports multi-tasking and networking.  But
  176. like the 286 and 386 processors, full realization of these
  177. ULTRABOARD capabilities awaits the completion of an operating
  178. system, already under development, specific to the new
  179. processor.
  180.  
  181. An optional ULTRABOARD power kit supplies continuous backup
  182. battery power to the ULTRABOARD RAM, to keep the memory
  183. capacity of the machine always active, during a cold boot, a
  184. power failure, or even when the computer is turned off.
  185.  
  186. The ULTRABOARD provides pin-outs for an SCSI bus, enabling the
  187. processor to support up to 300 megabytes of hard disk storage.
  188.  
  189. And of course, at no additional cost, ULTRABOARD includes the
  190. full implementation of HANDYMAN, High Tech Research's built-in
  191. Desk Top Utility.
  192.  
  193. High Tech Research has in development a high speed interface
  194. between the ULTRABOARD and the PC.  This will eventually
  195. permit the connection of the CP/M Kaypro to a cheap PC clone
  196. for hard disk storage, and for use as a network file server.
  197.  
  198. Last year at the HANDYMAN "B.A.K.U.P." meeting, I said that
  199. Bill Nesting of High Tech Research and people like him were
  200. the future of CP/M, people who were finding ways to improve a
  201. basically excellent personal computer.  ULTRABOARD validates
  202. that claim.
  203.  
  204. There have always been reasons to stick with CP/M.  Thanks to
  205. High Tech Research and the ULTRABOARD, we have now been given
  206. the best reason of them all: the lowly Kaypro CP/M computer
  207. just jumped ahead of the best of the DOS machines, in a single
  208. bound.
