  4.      This month let's take the plunge and learn to install Perfect
  5. Writer to properly operate a printer.  Of course its impossible to cover
  6. every conceivable printer, so we'll install the Smith-Corona TP-I
  7. Printer.  If you look over how it was done for that printer, you should
  8. be able to get the idea of how it is installed and modify the directions
  9. to your specific printer.  The main point to be made is that the format
  10. given below allows you to format your file on the screen and except for
  11. boldface and underscore, you will see exactly what the printed page will
  12. look like to include page breaks, margins, justifications, etc.  That's
  13. important.  You will have to print your document only one time and it
  14. will not only save time, it will save printer ribbons and wear and tear
  15. on your printer.  Here, then, is how it is done - step-by-step.  The
  16. information after the ":" is what you enter at the keyboard.  Of course,
  17. "return" means just hit the carriage return.
  18.  
  19.   PERFECT WRITER INSTALLATION
  20.   PROTOCOL FOR TP-I PRINTER
  21.  
  22.      The printer configuration program uses a program on your
  23. installation disk named PFCONFIG.COM.  This program gathers material
  24. regarding printer configuration and stores it in a special file named
  25. PF.DAT.  Note that this file comes from Perfect already full of printer
  26. definitions, and if any more are to be added, it is necessary to delete
  27. one or more existing definitions first.  The PF.DAT file must be present
  28. when you use your printer or Perfect will not understand how to send it
  29. data.  The following installation procedures result in an edit disk
  30. suited for writing a book and make all opening instruction in text files
  31. unnecessary.  The text will be 51 lines to the page and the line length
  32. will be 55 characters.  The margins will be one and a half inch on each
  33. side and margins will be justified.
  34.  
  35. A.  Copy the MASTER Installation disk.
  36.  
  37. B.  Copy the MASTER Edit disk.
  38.  
  39. C.  Sysgen (write CP/M to) both new disks.
  40.  
  41. D.  Place the newly created Edit disk in drive A and the newly
  42. created Installation disk in drive B.
  43.  
  44. E.  Give the system a "cold start" by pressing reset.
  45.  
  46. F.  After getting the "A>," type "B:pfconfig" and hit "return".
  47.  
  48. 1) To the question "Wish to change Edit disks?" Answer "NO".
  49.  
  50. 2) Select No.  2, "Define printer types".
  51.  
  52. 3) Select No.  1, "List the currently defined printer types".  Look them
  53. over.  Note that one printer type MUST BE DELETED to make room for your
  54. new printer definition.  Choose one to be deleted.  Type any character to
  55. return to the next level, and delete the printer definition by selecting
  56. option No.  4, "Delete printer definition".  When it asks the name of the
  57. printer to delete, respond with your selection.

  59. 4) When the prompt says "O.K.  to delete printer definition?" Answer
  60. "Yes".
  61.  
  62. 5) Select option No.  1, "List currently defined printer types," and
  63. verify that the selected type has in fact been deleted.
  64.  
  65. 6) Return to the next level by typing any character and select No. 2,
  66. "Define a new printer type".
  67.  
  68. 7) When the prompt asks the name of the new printer type, respond
  69. "TP-I".

  71. G.  The specific steps to follow in selecting a new printer are as
  72. follows:

  74. 1) Paper Width: 21590 micas.
  75.  
  76. 2) Paper Height: 27940 micas.
  77.  
  78. 3) Standard character width: 254 micas.
  79.  
  80. 4) Height of a single-spaced line: 423 micas.
  81.  
  82. 5) Smallest Horizontal movement: 254 micas.
  83.  
  84. 6) Smallest Vertical movement: 423 micas.

  86. 7) Proportionally spaced font/printwheel? No.
  87.  
  88. 8) There may be no number 8, or there may be an 8 that says Character
  89. Width: return.

  91. 9) Generate on-line readable output? No.

  93. 10) Initial paper offset: 0.

  95. 11) Special Printer code: 1.

  97. 12) Use Control-H for backspace? Yes.

  113. 20) New line string: " Control Q", "return", "return".  Note this will
  114. yield a "control M" as follows: "^M".

  116. 21) Boldface on string: return.

  118. 22) Boldface off: return.

  120. 23) Italics on string: return.

  122. H.  Return to the previous level.

  124. I.  Select "1," "List Currently defined printer types," and verify that
  125. TP-I has been listed as a newly defined printer type.

  127. J.  Return to the previous level by typing any character.

  129. K.  Select "5" - "Select the default printer type".
  130.  
  131. L.  Name of the default printer type: "TP-I".
  132.  
  133. M.  Name of printer type for console: "Console".

  135. N.  "Update existing printer definition," and when it asks for the name
  136. of the printer to be edited, respond "Console".  Change the "Console"
  137. definitions so that they match the definitions for the TP-I.  This is
  138. necessary so that "what you see on the screen is what you get on the
  139. printer".  Specifically:

  141. 1) Paper width: 21590 micas.
  142.  
  143. 2) Paper height: 27940 micas.
  144.  
  145. 3) Standard Character: 254.
  146.  
  147. 4) Height of Single spaced line: 423.

  185. S.  CONGRATULATIONS! You have just configured Perfect Writer to
  186. the Smith-Corona TP-1 printer.

  188. Think about this.  It is possible to delete all the pre-defined printer
  189. types on the COPY above.  SAVE THE MASTER! When you do, you can redefine
  190. seven or eight variations for your one printer.  One is justified; one is
  191. without right margin justification; one is block paragraph; one is
  192. indented paragraph; one has endspace; one has no endspace, etc.  THEN
  193. WHEN YOU SEND YOUR DATA TO THE PRINTER - DO NOT SELECT THE DEFAULT
  194. PRINTER TYPE.  SELECT THE ONE THAT IS THE FORMAT YOU WANT.  Be sure you
  195. have named them something meaningful like Just; non-just; indent;
  196. non-indent; etc.  The point is - Perfect Writer doesn't know or care
  197. that all those "different" printer definitions are really the same
  198. printer with different style outputs.
