  5. The Happy Investors(TM) Personal Portfolio Organizer (HIPPO(TM)) 
  6. supports  your investment decision making with accurate,  timely 
  7. reports on your securities.   It provides the basics  -- current 
  8. prices,  earnings,  and  dividend  yields -- but also  has  many 
  9. unique  features  that make it a powerful tool for  the  serious 
  10. investor. HIPPO(TM) acts as your faithful and experienced clerk, 
  11. so you'll be glad you hired our HIPPO!

  13. HIPPO'S BASIC FEATURES

  15. Like other good portfolio tracking systems, HIPPO(TM) reports:

  63. Licensees of the  full HIPPO(TM) package will receive  a  clear, 
  64. printed  manual,  which will make everything easier  still,  but 
  65. these few pages are really all an experienced computer user  and 
  66. investor needs to get started.  Have fun!

  68. SYSTEM OVERVIEW
  69.  
  70. To use Happy Investors(TM) Personal Portfolio Organizer (HIPPO(TM)), 
  71. you enter information into four programs.  
  72.  
  73. HIPinit   In  the  full system,  you use this program  first  to 
  74.      create  your  portfolio  files  and to  enter  a  portfolio 
  75.      heading.   In this free demo system,  you can only select a 
  76.      sorting  option.   HIPinit also sets your cash balance  and 
  77.      daily cash increment.  
  78.  
  79. HIPsecur  This  friendly  program enters securities you  own  or 
  80.      want to watch,  records purchases,  and enters sales.  (The 
  81.      demonstration  version  is limited to four  securities  and 
  82.      eight purchases,  enough for the small investor,  who can't 
  83.      afford $90 for HIPPO(TM), to use happily until he grows.)
  84.  
  85. HIPedit   When  you need to enter stock dividends or splits,  or 
  86.      to edit purchase or security records, use this program.  
  87.  
  88. HIPprice  Run  this  quick  and easy program  to  enter  current 
  89.      prices  of securities and values of market indices,  and to 
  90.      enter dividends, ex-dividend dates, and earnings per share.  
  91.  
  92. HIPreprt then uses the price file created by HIPprice to  update 
  93. your portfolio, and prepares your printed portfolio report.  
  94.  
  95. USING THE HIPPO(TM) SYSTEM
  96.  
  97. Each HIPPO(TM) program  is simple to use.   It prompts  you  for 
  98. information  straightforwardly  and shows you how to  enter  the 
  99. data. And while its clarity discourages mistakes, HIPPO(TM) makes 
  100. them easy to fix when they do occur.
  101.  
  102. Happy Investor's(TM) Personal Portfolio Organizer almost  always 
  103. displays  in parentheses () an appropriate response that you can 
  104. chose simply by pressing RETURN.  We call it "the default."
  105.  
  106. To exit any  HIPPO(TM) program,  or to go  back  to  correct  an 
  107. erroneous entry, press BACKSPACE, CTRL/H, or DELETE.  These keys 
  108. back you up successively through previous prompts.
  109.  
  110. Note,  as  you enter securities into your portfolio,  that  type 
  111. codes B,  N,  T,  and $ must be reserved for bonds,  notes, tax-
  112. exempt bonds,  and cash equivalents,  since their prices, unlike 
  113. other securities', are quoted as percentages of face value.
  114.  
  115. The HIPPO(TM) system compares the performance of each purchase you 
  116. make  with the performance of a selected market index during the 
  117. same period.  For this feature to work, you must enter the value 
  118. of  your chosen comparison index on the date of  each  purchase.  
  119. You  can do this in HIPsecur at the time you enter the purchase, 
  120. or later using HIPedir.   Because it can be any index, HIPPO(TM) 
  121. calls  it  *INDX;  most investors use the Value  Line  Composite 
  122. Average or the Dow-Jones Industrial Average.  
  123.  
  124. Because  Happy  Man Corporation does not make its money  selling 
  125. people securities prices,  we have built into HIPprice a  quick, 
  126. easy  way  to  create a new price file each day before  you  run 
  127. HIPreprt.   Since  you  can enter closing quotes as fast  as  he 
  128. speaks,  your  broker will welcome the chance to spend a  minute 
  129. with you each day.   If you prefer not to use his free services, 
  130. you  can use the afternoon paper or a private quote service,  or 
  131. get your price file from a timesharing service by modem.  
  132.  
  133. HIPreprt, run after HIPprice, uses the price file to update your 
  134. portfolio files while it prints a detailed report.  
  135.  
  136. Your  portfolio  report will look like the  illustration  below.  
  137. Because so much useful information is presented,  it may  appear 
  138. cluttered at first.   Any confusion will soon pass as you become 
  139. familiar  with  the report and grow to appreciate the  power  it 
  140. gives you.  Remember that it isn't hard to master, just new.

  143. line of information, which we have emphasized below:

  151. %Div Dividend yield,  the indicated annual dividend as a percen-
  152.      tage of the price.  Update the dividend figure, whenever it 
  153. changes, with HIPprice.

  155. Tkr  Ticker symbol,  entered with HIPsecur when you created  the 
  156.      new  security record.   Ticker symbols can be changed,  but 
  157. not in the demonstration package.  
  158.  
  159. %EPS Earnings yield.   This is the last 12 months' earnings  per 
  160.      share as a percentage of the price -- the reciprocal of the 
  161. price/earnings (P/E) ratio.  The earnings yield expression makes 
  162. it  easier to compare securities and interest rates than the P/E 
  163. ratio does.  Update earnings, when they change, with HIPprice.
  164.  
  165. Price      Current price of the security.   You can update  your 
  166.      prices daily with HIPprice, easily and quickly.
  167.  
  168. Day  The percentage change in price since the previous report.
  169.  
  170. Shrt,Med,Lng   Percentage change in price versus short,  medium, 
  171.      and long-term moving averages.   These take time to develop 
  172. a history.  The manual explains how to give them a head start.
  173.  
  174. Security Name  The  name of the security,  as you entered it  in 
  175.      HIPsecur.  In the full package, names can be changed.
  176.  
  177. ToVal     The  total value of your holdings of this security  at 
  178.      the current price, in thousands of dollars.
  179.  
  180. T    Type  of security,  such as S for stocks and B  for  bonds.  
  181.      The  type  code  is  entered  for  new  securities  through 
  182. HIPsecur and can be changed later with HIPedit.  
  183.  
  184. Cst  Total  cost  of  your  holdings in  thousands  of  dollars.
  185.  
  186. Shares    The total number of shares you own of a stock,  or the 
  187.      total face value of your bonds.
  188.  
  189. Ex-Date   The date on which the shares begin trading without the 
  190.      dividend.  Prices can move sharply on the ex-dividend date.
  191.  
  192. Directly  below  each security listing,  all of  your  purchases 
  193. appear in two columns.  We have emphasized one column below.

  201. PurDate   Date of the purchase.

  203. L    Long-term code:  this space is blank until six weeks before 
  204.      a purchase becomes long-term, when an asterisk (*) appears.  
  205. After  the purchase is long-term,  the asterisk changes to an L.  
  206. The  asterisk  code will alert you in case you want to wait  for 
  207. more  favorable tax treatment before selling at a  gain,  or  to 
  208. sell  the  shares  while you can still take a  short-term  loss.  
  209. This little memory-jogger can pay for HIPPO(TM) quickly!
  210.  
  211. Shares    The number of shares purchased.   This will usually be 
  212.      a whole number but,  if you are in a dividend  reinvestment 
  213. plan or a mutual fund, you can enter decimal fractions.
  214.  
  215. Value     The purchase's value at the security's current price.
  216.  
  217. @    Location  code:  your  made up,  one-letter  code  for  the 
  218.      location of your stock certificates.   (The "M" shown might 
  219. stand for Merrill Lynch.)
  220.  
  221. V/C  Value/Cost ratio: the current value of the purchase divided 
  222.      by its cost.  It shows how you've done -- higher is better.
  223.  
  224. Mrkt Market index ratio:   the current value of *INDX divided by 
  225.      its  value on the purchase date.   Thus you can compare the 
  226. performance of your purchase, indicated by the Value/Cost ratio, 
  227. above, to the market's performance during the same period.  This 
  228. unique feature helps you learn faster from your experience.
