"TELE-CHESS VERSION 1.4
"
"THIS IS A TWO PLAYER CHESS GAME THAT
"ALLOWS THE PLAYERS TO EACH PLAY FROM
"THE COMFORT OF THEIR OWN HOME VIA A
"MODEM AND TELEPHONE CONNECTION.
"
"THE FOLLOWING FILES ARE NEEDED TO PLAY
"THIS GAME:TELE-CHESS 1.4, CHESS.CHRSET,
"AND TELE-CHESS.DOC.
"
"AFTER THE PROGRAM HAS LOADED IN, YOU
"WILL BE ASKED FOR YOUR NAME, THE NAME
"OF YOUR OPPONENT, AND FOR A MODEM
"COMMAND.
"
"
"THE MODEM COMMAND IS FOR SMART MODEMS.
"THE COMMAND YOU ENTER WILL BE SENT TO
"YOUR MODEM BEFORE THE START OF THE
"MATCH. EG: ATA, ATO,
"
"IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SMART MODEM, JUST
"PRESS RETURN AT THE MODEM COMMAND
"PROMPT.
"
"THE TWO PLAYERS SHOULD CONTACT EACH
"OTHER BY PHONE, AND DECIDE WHO WILL
"PLAY WHITE, AND WHO WILL PLAY BLACK.
"ANSWER THE PROMPT FOR THE SIDE TO PLAY
"AND THE BOARD WILL BE SET UP. THE
"PLAYERS SHOULD SWITCH ON THEIR MODEMS,
"ONE IN ANSWER MODE, THE OTHER IN
"ORIGINATE MODE, AND THEN THE GAME CAN
"BEGIN.
"
"USE JOYSTICK IN PORT 2. CLICK ONCE ON
"THE PIECE YOU WISH TO MOVE AND CLICK
"AGAIN ON THE SQUARE THAT YOU WANT TO
"MOVE TO. THE PIECE WILL AUTOMATICALLY
"BE MOVED ON EACH OF THE PLAYERS
"BOARDS. PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE
"ERROR CHECKING IN THE MOVE ROUTINES,
"YOU CANNOT MOVE PIECES UNLESS YOU ARE
"IN MODEM CONTACT WITH ANOTHER USER
"RUNNING THIS PROGRAM. OTHERWISE,
"THE BOARD WILL ATTEMPT TO SEND THE
"MOVES AND QUIT AFTER 50 SECONDS IF YOU
"ARE NOT CONNECTED TO ANOTHER PLAYER.
"
"TO CHAT WITH YOUR OPPONENT, JUST TYPE
"ON THE KEYBOARD. THE CHAT MODE ALLOWS
"THE TWO PLAYERS TO SIMULTANEOUSLY
"CONVERSE AS YOU PLAY THE GAME.
"
"FUNCTION KEYS:
"
"F1 UNDO: THIS WILL UNDO YOUR LAST
"MOVE. NOTE: MUST BE PRESSED BY BOTH
"SIDES. YOU SHOULD USE CHAT MODE TO
"INFORM THE OTHER PLAYER THAT YOU
"INTEND TO UNDO. ACCORDING TO THE RULES
"OF CHESS, HE DOES NOT HAVE TO LET YOU
"TAKE BACK A BAD MOVE. IF YOU UNDO A
"MOVE AND FAIL TO TELL THE OTHER SIDE
"YOUR CHESS BOARDS WILL NO LONGER BE
"IN AGREEMENT, AND THE GAME WILL BE
"RUINED.
"
"
"F2 RESET: RESETS THE BOARD AND
"SWITCHES COLORS OF PIECES FOR ANOTHER
"GAME.
"
"F3 SAVE: SAVES THE CURRENT STATE OF
"THE BOARD IN CASE THE GAME IS
"DISRUPTED IN THE MIDDLE. BOTH SIDES
"MUST SAVE THE GAME IF IT IS TO BE
"CONTINUED LATER.
"
"F4 LOAD: LOADS A PREVIOUSLY SAVED
"GAME. BOTH SIDES SHOULD LOAD THE SAME
"GAME OR CHAOS WILL RESULT.
"
"F5 MODEM: SENDS A MODEM COMMAND
"
"F6 ALTER: LETS YOU SET-UP THE BOARD,
"SWITCH PIECES, AND GENERALLY EDIT THE
"BOARD IN ANY WAY YOU WANT. THIS
"FUNCTION SHOULD MAINLY BE USED TO
"SELECT WHICH PIECE A PAWN WILL BECOME
"IF IT SHOULD MAKE IT TO THE OTHER SIDE
"OF THE BOARD. THE PROGRAM IS SET TO
"AUTOMATICALLY SELECT THE QUEEN IN
"THIS INSTANCE, BUT FOR STRATEGIC
"PURPOSES, PLAYERS MAY WISH TO ELECT A
"DIFFERENT PIECE. USING CHAT MODE AND
"THIS OPTION WILL ALLOW THE PLAYERS TO
"DO THIS. NOTE THAT THE ALTERATIONS
"MADE ON ONE BOARD VIA THIS OPTION ARE
"NOT SENT OVER THE TELEPHONE. BOTH
"SIDES MUST SELECT THIS OPTION IN ORDER
"TO STAY IN AGREEMENT. IF THE TWO
"PLAYERS WISH TO ENTER A GAME FROM A
"BOOK OR MAGAZINE, IT WOULD BE FASTER
"FOR ONE OF THE PLAYERS TO SET UP THE
"BOARD USING THE JOYSTICK TO MOVE THE
"PIECES AROUND, THAN IT WOULD TO HAVE
"BOTH PLAYERS USE THE MODIFY OPTION.
"
"F7 CHECK : SENDS THE WORD CHECK...
"OVER THE TELEPHONE. SAVES A LOT OF
"TYPING IN AN ACTIVE GAME!
"
"F8 COLOUR: YOU CAN ALTER THE COLOUR
"OF THE BOARD OR THE PIECES WITH THIS
"OPTION TO SUIT YOUR PERSONAL TASTE, OR
"THE PECULIARITIES OF YOUR MONITOR. THE
"PIECES CAN BE ANY OF THE 16 COMMODORE
"COLOURS, AND THE BOARD SQUARES CAN BE
"ANY OF THE 8 CTRL COLOURS.
"
"THERE IS FULL ERROR CHECKING AS EACH
"MOVE IS TRANSMITTED SO THERE IS NO
"POSSIBILITY OF A MOVE ARRIVING AT THE
"OTHER END WITH THE WRONG CO-ORDINATES.
