Z3YANCAT - OR AVOIDING THE MCAT VS. YANC DECISION WITH ZCPR3
Much has been made of the great PD disk catalog shootout -
which currently comes down to Irv Hoff's lean and fast MCAT45 and
Paul Sittler's menu-driven, but rather slow and very large YANC-
23. I liked much about the latest incarnations of both programs
- MCAT for speed, YANC for versatility. Z3YANCAT is simply a
YANC-like ZCPR3 MENU shell - the actual shell is MENU Version
3.6, renamed YANC.COM and patched to look for YANC.MNU. In
addition to MCAT and XCAT, it also runs Hoff's lightning-fast
FIND51.COM, ZEX, WordStar and your favorite flavor of SD (ZRDOS
users need Joseph Wright's SD97.COM, those with the Plu*Perfect
Systems PUBLIC patch to the DRI BDOS should use the SD.COM in
PUBPAT.LBR or PUBPAT11.LBR) renamed to DIR.COM.
I really didn't need the elaborate help screens of YANC-23 - as
Sittler himself has noted, novices don't stay that way for long -
but it wouldn't be hard to simulate them if you desire. WordStar
is a lot of code to carry, but is needed to enable the automated
initialization of MAST.CAT and the PURGE function, both under ZEX
control - hard disk people will have it available anyway and us
poor floppy users usually have a dedicated catalog disk. Just
install YANC.COM with Z3INS and you should be ready to go -
modify YANC.MNU to suit your situation, a lot of hard disk
machines have their floppies as drive C, for example. Z3YANCAT
assumes only SAVE and ERA as CPR or RCP resident commands. The
PURGE function, by the way, can be quite a test of patience,
particularly if there aren't that many file names on the disk
volume being purged - just don't give up and hit control-C or all
will be for nought! By the way, my WordStar starts out in non-
document mode - document mode is OK for purging but the high bits
may pose a problem for MAST.CAT initialization - I didn't try it.
Of course, if you already have MENU.COM on your Z3 path, you
can get rid of YANC.COM, rename YANC.MNU to MENU.MNU and start
the whole shebang with an ALIAS named YANC.COM or ST.COM - as is
usually the case where ZCPR3 is concerned, there are dozens of
options and variations possible. Have fun!
