**>> PRN UPDATE <<**
This file briefly describes the changes in v3.6 of PRN, the
graphics processor for CP/M computers. PRN creates, stores and
prints graphic characters in WordStar and NewWord text files.
1. A new printing option (Main Menu Option #6) has been
added. This function prints text without adding margins and
dividing it into pages. Plain text like source code and
documentation can therefore be printed in formats other than the
WordStar standard page. In v3.5, such plain printing would have
required insertion of dot commands in the file to turn off the
standard format. In addition, under the new Option #6, printer
settings made with Main Menu Option #1 do not interact with
automatic page formatting, and this makes it easier to set the
printer for ordinary text.
2. A user-determined line spacing can be set from PRN
Main Menu Option #1. The same custom spacing (eg, half-line or
triple) can be toggled from within a file using a new imbedded
print command, ^Y= .. =^Y.
3. Letter quality print has been added to the Option #1
menu, and a new print command, ^Y& .. &^Y, has been added so that
this mode can be toggled from within a text file. This option is
available on recent Epson printers which have an LQ font.
4. A user-patchable string of any sort may be sent to
the printer from the menu of Option #1. This can be used for
commands not included when the program was designed, or for
automated delivery of a series of setup commands.
5. A new dot command, .CF, enables the program to switch
character files automatically while printing. This is a major
enhancement which makes available an essentially unlimited number
of user-created graphics, in addition to the 54 graphic
characters originally available in the first-selected character
file. Alternatively, using this dot command, each text file
containing graphics can be headed by a dot command which
automatically loads and uses the correct set of custom
characters.
6. Numerous smaller changes have been made. ^X (stop
printing) has been made much more responsive, in order to make
printing part of a file easier. The directory patch circulated
separately, which give the directory (Main Menu Option #8) access
to the current user area, has been made in the main program. The
ability to escape from print Options 5, 6, and 7 without
specifying a file to print (just type *<cr>) has been added, in
order to make it possible to review the directory when required.
There seems to be nothing else like PRN in the public domain, for
the design, storage, and dot-matrix printing of text containing
unusual character graphics. Read PRN36.DOC for full instructions
on using the program's many capabilities.
