FORTH.DOC
This archive includes reference material for the three major FORTH
dialects, these being - Fig-FORTH, FORTH-79, FORTH-83. Fig-FORTH
and FORTH-79 have been largely superceded by FORTH-83 though
implementations and program source for these still exist. Hence
they have been included for reference purposes.
The texts are extracts from the relevant Standard documents and
provide definitions of the primary or basic Forth Wordsets. These
are the basic 'building blocks' upon which user-defined functions
and programs are created.
For those wishing to learn about Forth, a good tutorial to FORTH-83
is STARTING FORTH (Second Edition) by L.Brodie, Prentice-Hall.
While many commercial Forth-83 compilers exist, a good public-domain
implementation is 'F83' by Laxen & Perry. Versions are available for
MS-DOS and CP/M-80 and may be obtained from computer bulletin boards
or shareware distribution houses. The best source for Forth related
material is, however, the Forth Interest Group, USA. Write to them
for a mail order list. They will also be able to advise you as to
the location of your nearest FIG Chapter.
