  1. KERMIT BINARY FILES                                            January 2000

  5. Kermit software is not in the public domain.  Be sure to read the copyright
  6. notices that come with each version.
  7.  
  8. This directory, kermit/bin, contains 8-bit binary files, in most cases
  9. executable Kermit program images for various platforms, with names
  10. corresponding to the naming conventions used in the a, b, c, and d
  11. directories.  For instance, where the msvibm.boo file in the kermit/a
  12. directory is a printable text encoding of msvibm.exe, the real msvibm.exe
  13. can be found in kermit/bin.
  14.  
  15.   THE FILES IN THIS DIRECTORY ARE, IN GENERAL, NOT COMPLETE KERMIT PACKAGES,
  16.   BUT RATHER, ISOLATED BINARIES.  A COMPLETE KERMIT PACKAGE USUALLY INCLUDES
  17.   NUMEROUS AUXILLIARY FILES.  C-KERMIT AND MS-DOS KERMIT ARE ALSO INCOMPLETE
  18.   WITHOUT THE APPROPRIATE PUBLISHED MANUAL, "USING C-KERMIT" OR "USING
  19.   MS-DOS KERMIT".  Look in the kermit/archives directory for prepackaged
  20.   versions of the most popular Kermit programs.

  22. Before downloading any of these binary files with Kermit, be sure to "set file
  23. type binary".  If you are getting these files with FTP, also be sure to use
  24. the appropriate command to tell your FTP program that these are binary files,
  25. such as "type binary".  Here is a listing of the more popular entries in this
  26. directory:

  29. C-KERMIT

  31. C-Kermit binaries.  These are not compressed or tar'd.  Just transfer
  32. them in binary mode, rename them appropriately, and chmod +x to give
  33. them execute permission.  The names of the files are supposed to explain
  34. what they are:

  38. where x is u for UNIX, v for VMS, d for Data General AOS/VS, l for
  39. Stratus VOS, s for Atari ST, i for Commodore Amiga, 9 for Microware
  40. OS-9, p for Plan 9 from Bell Labs.  nnn is the edit number:

  43.   192 = C-Kermit 6.0
  44.   196 = C-Kermit 7.0

  50. MS-DOS KERMIT

  52. MS-DOS Kermit binaries for the IBM PC, PS/2, and compatibles.  NOTE: you
  53. should normally not retrieve MS-DOS Kermit binaries separately; they are part
  54. of a larger package, which is packaged together in a ZIP archive, msvibm.zip,
  55. stored in the kermit/archives directory.
