INSTALLATION
------------
If you downloaded this file from a BBS, you don't need to run
Install. If you purchased an evaluation disk from a shareware
vendor or the story, follow these directions.
To install Cargo Bay, place the diskette into the A drive and
type A:, or into the B drive and type B:. When the A> or B> prompt
appears on the screen, type INSTALL. Follow the directions to
install the software.
To begin the game type CARGO.
NOTE TO WINDOWS USERS
---------------------
Cargo Bay will run as a DOS application, spawned under Windows. To
install a Cargo Bay icon on your Windows Program Manager, run the
included Setup program. Note that you must install the game to a
directory other than the one in which you have unzipped it. The
Setup program will create an icon on your Windows Program Manager.
If you do not wish to run Setup, you can still run the game from
Windows. To do so, from Program Manager, first click on File, then
on Run. Then enter the directory in which you have installed Cargo
Bay, followed by \CARGO. Then click on OK.
MAKING A CLEAN BOOT DISK
------------------------
If you encounter problems running Cargo Bay there may be a conflict
between it and a program resident in memory. Here's a way to avoid
the conflict.
Place a blank, unformatted diskette into drive A of your computer.
Then type
FORMAT A:/S/U
and press enter. When the computer is finished formatting the disk
and copying the system files to it, press the RESET button on your
computer or the ALT-CTRL-DEL keys at the same time. After your
computer has rebooted, go to the Cargo Bay directory and play the
game. If it runs, there is a conflict between a resident program
loaded by your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file. Whenever you want
to play Cargo Bay, simply reboot your computer with the boot disk
you have created.

=========================< THE STORY >=========================
Altair-217 is an experiment in peace. Five warring planets have
decided to work out their differences by sending diplomats and
colonists to coexist at this space station. The Taurien
Coalition, however, has other plans. This criminal group with
members from the five races has vowed to keep the peace
initiative from succeeding. They have planted iradium explosive
devices in the colonists' cargo bays throughout the station.
If detonated, the races will blame each other, and all hopes for
peace will vanish.
You play Lt. Marston, Head of Security for Altair-217. You have
just received a communique. HQ Sector Command has directed you
to clear the station of all iradium devices before they can
be detonated. To fail would mean the destruction of the station,
and the end of the peace.
======================< PLAYING THE GAME >=====================
Startup:
~~~~~~~~
Type "CARGO" at the command line to start Cargo Bay. After the
logos are displayed, you will see the introduction. You can hit
the ESC button to exit the intro, or any other key to page to the
next screen. You can also click the left mouse button to page to
the next screen. You will then see the main menu.
The Main Menu:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Main Menu screen has several controls on it. In the upper
right corner are labels that read "INSTRUCTIONS," "LOAD\SAVE,"
and "EXIT." Next to each label is a button with a keyboard
equivalent printed on it.
INSTRUCTIONS [F3] - Shows the Cargo Bay instructions.
LOAD\SAVE [F2] - Shows the Load\Save Game dialog box.
EXIT [ESC] - Exits Cargo Bay.
To activate these, either click on the button with your mouse, or
press the associated key.
In the middle of the screen you will see a section of alien faces
labeled "Levels." Clicking on a face changes the current level,
causing the Bay selections at the bottom of the screen to change.
You can choose these by clicking on the alien face with your
mouse, or by pressing the key of the first letter of their race
name.
Caelian [C] or [c] - Level 1.
Eridani [E] or [e] - Level 2.
Ge' Tar [G] or [g] - Level 3.
Taurien [T] or [t] - Level 4.
Muuldok [M] or [m] - Level 5.
At the bottom of the screen you will see a section labeled
"Bays." You select the Cargo Bay you want to clear, and click on
the miniature bay or press the function key next to that diagram.
[F5] - First bay of that level.
[F6] - Second bay.
[F7] - Third bay.
[F8] - Fourth bay.
Choosing one of these takes you to the Game Screen.
Unlabeled keys:
[F9] - Toggles Sound FX on/off.
[F10] - Toggles Music on/off.
The Game Screen:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the left side of the game screen is the play field. This is
where the action takes place in Cargo Bay. The shimmering blue
squares are beam pads. Your goal is to push all of the crates
onto these pads before the timer runs out. At the top-right of
the screen is the "Status" section. This tells you the current
state of the game. There are four displays, labeled "SCORE,"
"TIME," "BAY" and "LEVEL."
SCORE - Current total score for the game.
TIME - Time left until detonation of the iradium charges.
BAY - The current bay you are playing.
LEVEL - The current level.
Directly below the "Status" display is the "Controls" board. It
has four labels that read "EXIT", "HELP", "OPTIONS" and "UNDO".
Next to each label is a button with the keyboard equivalent
printed on it.
EXIT [ESC] - Exit the current bay.
HELP [F1] - Display the "Help" screens.
OPTIONS [O] - Display the "Options" dialog box.
UNDO [U] - Undo to the position prior to the last push.
Below these controls are four arrows representing Grav-Sled
movement keys. To activate any of these, click on the button
with your mouse, or press the associated keyboard equivalent.
Scoring:
10 points for each crate pushed onto a beampad.
100 points for each bay solved.
500 points for each level solved.
Unlabeled keys:
[F9] - Toggles Sound FX on/off.
[F10] - Toggles Music on/off.
[T] or [t] - Toggles the Timer on/off.
The Options Menu:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Choosing "Options" from the Game Screen menu brings up the
Options dialog box. Here you can change the configuration of
Cargo Bay to suit your preferences. On the top half of the
Options screen you will see two columns of buttons, as shown
on the next page:
Left Column:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
INSTRUCTIONS [F3] - Displays Cargo Bay instructions.
INTRODUCTION [I] - Displays Cargo Bay intro.
SOUND FX [ON] - Toggles Sound FX on/off.
EXIT [ESC] - Exit Options dialog box.
Right Column:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MUSIC [ON] - Toggles Music on/off.
TIMER [ON] - Toggles Timer on/off.
SOLVE [S] - Auto-Solves current bay.
RESET [R] - Resets current bay to original position.
To activate any of these, click on the button with your mouse, or
press the associated key. For this shareware version of Cargo
Bay, the "Solve" button will only solve the first bay. If you
order the full, registered version, you will have the Auto-Solve
feature for all 60 bays.
On the bottom half of the screen you will see two volume
adjustment displays. The first one controls the music volume.
Use your mouse to click on the [+] key to increase volume, or the
[-] key to decrease it. The Sound FX volume adjustment works the
same way. The LED-type indicator between the [+] and [-] keys
will show you the approximate volume level. When you exit Cargo
Bay, these levels will be saved in the game configuration file,
so they will be at the levels you set them the next time you play.
Below the volume adjustment section, you will see a button next
to a display that reads "Show intro at game startup?". Click on
this button to toggle whether you wish to see the intro every
time you begin Cargo Bay.
Unlabeled keys:
[F9] - Toggles Sound FX on/off.
[F10] - Toggles Music on/off.
[T] or [t] - Toggles the Timer on/off.
The Load\Save Menu:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Choosing [F2] from the main menu brings up the Load\Save dialog
box. At the top-right you will see four labels that read "LOAD,"
"SAVE," "CANCEL" and "OK."
LOAD [L] - Load a saved game from disk.
SAVE [S] - Save current game to disk.
CANCEL [ESC] - Cancel current action.
OK [OK] - Accept action.
[Return] is the equivalent key for "OK." You may either click on
these buttons, or press their equivalent keys. To the left, you
will see seven "slots" that will read "EMPTY" the first time you
play Cargo Bay. When you save a game, you will be prompted to
type in a description of the save game in these slots, to help
you remember them. You can stop any action at any time by
pressing the Cancel button [ESC].
=====================< ADDITIONAL OPTIONS >====================
Sound Overrides:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most of the time, Cargo Bay will correctly determine whether you
have a sound card, and if so, what its settings are. However,
there may be a time when this doesn't work perfectly for your
system. If you play Cargo Bay and you don't hear any sound
effects or music, you should first make certain that the volume
is turned up on your speakers, that they are properly connected,
that the volume is turned up on the "Options" dialog box, and
that the "Sound FX" and "Music" buttons read ON. If not, you may
need to enter command line overrides to manually set your sound
card's parameters.
There are three options that you may provide on the command line.
These are PORT, IRQ, and DMA. Refer to your sound card's
documentation to see what these values should be. You do not have
to enter each value, only the one that isn't being correctly
detected. However, if you aren't sure which one that is, enter
all three just to be safe. To enter them, simply type them after
the word CARGO when you start the game, like this:
CARGO DMA:1 PORT:220 IRQ:7
These values are just examples. You must use the correct values
for your card, as specified by the manufacturer. Either capital
or lower case letters is acceptable. If you make a mistake
entering the values, Cargo Bay will exit with a message
giving you the proper format.
