  8.         I have heard a good deal of discussion and a lot of
  9.     dissent about squashed files in an ARChive. There are SYSOPS
  10.     that will not allow squashed files on their boards. These
  11.     folks are behind the times. What would have happened if
  12.     squeezed files and library files and ARC files would have
  13.     been excluded when they first came out ?

  16.         When a file is ARChived, the ARCing program must
  17.     first decide which algorithm will yield the best compression
  18.     ratio (and this is no tivial task if you are optomizing for
  19.     speed). Each of the storage methods, packing, storing, squeezing
  20.     and crunching becomes the best choice under the right circumstances.
  21.     Squashing is no different. Why should we want to omit one of our
  22.     compression tools ?? Squashing can offer significant savings on the
  23.     right file and is a viable tool in our bag of compression tricks, not
  24.     to mention that it is the easiest (and most logical) to code.

  27.         Phil Katz has, in my opinion received undue criticism
  28.     on this squashing matter (and admittedly from me too in the
  29.     early stages, but that was not a well considered opinion).
  30.     I am in favor of squashed files and urge others to accept them
  31.     as well.
