On June 18,1985 IBM issued the following advisory:
IBM has determined that a faulty component on less than 10%
of Fixed Disk/Diskette Drive Adapters may cause problems with
data storage on the fixed disk drive.
IBM AT's affected are in the following serial number ranges;
Model 068 5019001 to 5141250
Model 099 0054001 to 0146900
only a limited number of these units are affected.
Two methods of inspection are provided.
1 - FD/DD Adapter Test Program
run the program- every few seconds an asterisk will appear on screen
to indicate normal progress. The test takes 60 minutes to complete.
At the end, results will appear on your screen.
2 - Visual inspection
All FD/DD Adapter cards with a TI chip with a -10 suffix in position
U-19 (near the "front" of the machine about three chips down from the
top), should be replaced.
IBM also notes that users who require replacement should be informed that
they could lose data on their fixed disk when replacing the adapter.
All this is pretty much verbatim per IBM System Support Guide dated
July,1985.
