Omen Technology Inc takes pride in announcing Professional-YAM for the
IBM Personal Computer.
We believe you will agree with our Beta testers that YAM is one of the
very best programs of its type, if not the best for experienced data
communications users.
If you would like a wee taste of Pro-YAM, give Omen's part-time YAM
remote access system a call at 503-621-3746 (Password = Ritchie).
1. Get a Handle on the Information Explosion
Professional-YAM is an INTEGRATED COMMUNICATIONS TOOL that helps you
COLLECT, CONTROL, and TRANSMIT information with a minimum of time,
hassle, and expense.
1.1 Collecting Information
Pro-YAM captures text from dial-up systems and local computers into a
large CIRCULAR BUFFER. This information may be written to disk with
several optional modes of parity bit and control character editing. The
CIRCULAR BUFFER allows the user to save important messages selectively,
without having to commit to capturing all data ahead of time. VT52 and
ADM3a terminal emulation access most on-line applications, including
Unix screen-oriented applications. YAM can display graphics sent by
many PC-based bulletin boards.
Pro-YAM provides three documented, public domain file transfer protocols
to exchange files with the widest range of computer systems and
networks, in addition to the popular Compuserve Information Service.
The YAM BATCH PROTOCOL provides efficient and accurate file transfers
between Pro-YAM and/or Unix systems. The YAM BATCH PROTOCOL preserves
the exact file length and creation date.
The widely implemented Ward Christensen MODEM/XMODEM protocol is a
subset of the YAM Batch Protocol. Pro-YAM's implementation uses several
proprietary logic enhancements to increase the robustness and accuracy
of file transfers IN ADDITION TO the 16 bit CRC option missing from most
commercial implementations. Only the 16 bit CRC guarantees the
detection of all double bit errors, all burst errors of 16 bits or less,
and more then 99.99 per cent of all other errors. This protection will
become even more important if the breakup of the telephone network
continues to degrade line quality.
The KERMIT PROTOCOL breaks the "mainframe barrier" to transfer text AND
BINARY files with a wide variety of mainframe computer systems,
including IBM, CDC, Honeywell, Pr1me, and Univac.
Pro-YAM supports error correcting file upload and download of text and
binary files with the popular Compuserve Information Service. A
Protocol Binary file transfers make costly, inefficient hexadecimal
coding unnecessary.
Pro-YAM's Remote access function allows file access and electronic mail
transfers to/from a wide variety of terminals and systems with multiple

passworded security levels. Remote access also allows automatic message
reception using either the YAM Batch or TWX protocol.
Pro-YAM uses a free form TELEPHONE DIRECTORY which contains any number
of remote system names, port numbers, transmission speeds, automatic
logins, and message retrieval scripts. The entries may also contain
off-line utility commands. The Telephone Directory can have scripts to
interrogate multiple bulletin boards and timesharing systems without
operator intervention. The Telephone Directory is a regular text file,
with no special characters, that can be edited with standard text
editors, listed on a printer, or transmitted, in whole or in part, to
other machines. YAM's single file Telephone Directory saves almost
400kb disk space (on a PC-XT) for each 100 directory entries compared to
programs which require a separate file for each function.
An alternate long distance service may be dynamically selected.
Full printer buffering allows use of slow printers, or printers with
burst transfers (line printer, MX80, etc.).
Pro-YAM's SCRIPT FACILITY automates many information gathering
operations, including high speed unattended information retrieval from
multiple bulletin board systems. YAM's ability to transfer data
unattended, at high speed, will become even more important as 2400 bps
and faster modems provide a countermeasure to high phone bills.
Pro-YAM's Remote access also allows automatic message reception using
either the YAM Batch or TWX protocol.
1.2 Controlling Information
Pro-YAM's CIRCULAR BUFFER lets you flip back and forth through data.
With BUFFER SEARCH commands, you can scan the subjects of two hundred
messages from Compuserve's bulletin boards in a couple of minutes. (It
has to be seen to be believed.) To reply to a message, save a piece of
it in a file, and call your favortie editor to compose your reply using
the message text as refrence. You can do this without losing your place
in the queue of incoming messages because Pro-YAM can call other DOS
programs as SUBROUTINES.
The high speed screen driver optimally supports DMA video boards for
maximum display speed. Display speeds are up to 450 per cent faster
than the corresponding DOS 2.1/ANSI.SYS commands. HARDCOPY TERMINAL
EMULATION converts overprint sequences to bold or underlined characters,
providing high speed CRT preview of printer output.
Pro-YAM fully supports transfers and disk utilities with DOS 2
PATHNAMES, DIRECTORIES, and WILDCARD FILENAME EXPANSIONS. Pro-YAM
provides a number of built in utility commands that operate on one or
more files. The output of the utility commands may be redirected to a
disk file or DOS supported printer. Incoming data or the output of
utility commands may be appended to existing text files, whether those
files were written in DOS or CP/M format.
Disk utility functions include directory change, directory listing with
file transfer time, and disk free space calculation.

Files, including SQUEEZED files, may be interactively listed, copied,
renamed, edited, unsqueezed, and/or deleted.
Pro-YAM provides file word/line count, and three types of file
checksum/CRC calculations for verifying the correctness and identity of
files transferred to or from other systems.
Pro-YAM can search files for lines matching a string, insensitive to
case.
1.3 Transmitting Information
Pro-YAM can upload files to many diverse types of systems, even
Microcomputer based Bulletin Board Message Systems incompatible with
common file uploading techniques. Pro-YAM can also send disk files to
TWX machines.
Pro-YAM provides an optional one line window for composing commands
and/or text to be transmitted when ENTER is typed. This CONFERENCE
command is especially useful when several people are keyboarding on a
party-line connection such as Compuserve's CB simulation.
Pro-YAM's Remote access function allows file access and electronic mail
transfers to/from a wide variety of terminals and systems with three
passworded security levels.
Pro-YAM's callout queue intersperses outgoing calls with incoming
messages with the same modem.
1.4 Other Features
Interrupt driven modem input allows High speed operation with file
transfer and conversational terminal operation at 19200 bps and above.
The modem port may be selected dynamically.
A real-time status line displays column, row, time, elapsed time,
transmission speed, and other important information.
Automatic encrypted password generation provides a unique password for
each remote system based on one local password and the remote system's
telephone directory entry name.
Fifty SOFT KEYS provide convenient execution of reptetitive commands.
Applications developers can use Pro-YAM's powerful script facility to
write task oriented menu interfaces for novice users.
Pro-YAM does not impose itself on the user with distracting graphics,
droll bits of wisdom, or cumbersome menus.
Professional-YAM can maintain logs of systems called, files sent, and/or
files received with disk, date/time, filename, file length, speed, and
the name of the remote system.
Pro-YAM is written in C for performance, portability and
maintainability. Pro-YAM loads quickly from a moderately sized

executable file with no cumbersome overlays.
Early versions of YAM have been used by an enthusiastic community of
computer wizards since 1981. Almost two decades of telecommunications
knowledge are distilled in Pro-YAM. In addition, Omen Technology is a
small firm that can respond to your needs.
Omen Technology Inc is proud to introduce DEMAND UPGRADE software update
technology which allows users to download updated software versions
without the bother and delay of traditional methods of upgrading
customers' software copies. Encrypted copies of the new versions of the
software are provided on publicly accessible dial-up system(s).
Legitimate users can download and decrypt the new version using files
supplied on their distribution disks.
Pro-YAM uses NO COPY PROTECTION scheme to cause hard disk
incompatibility, headaches and loss of work due to failure of the
distribution diskettes.
2. Manual
Pro-YAM comes with a cross refrenced 49000 word, 160 page manual. The
introductory manual is punched for PC style binders.
A special chapter helps you select the best file transfer method for
each application. An exclusive tutorial chapter explains how to design,
write, and debug your own scripts.
3. Requirements
Pro-YAM requires an IBM Personal Computer, XT, AT, or work-alike with
DOS 2 or DOS 3, 128k of available RAM, a 360k disk drive, 80 column
display, a serial port, and a user willing and able to read software
documentation. It is also assumed that the user is familiar with the
disk operating system (DOS) and basic telecommunications concepts.
Pro-YAM is not intended to be used as a beginner's communications
program unless customer supported for specific applications.
Pro-YAM exploits more memory, fixed disk(s), high performance displays,
and multiple serial ports, when present. Pro-YAM works well on the
PC-AT using DOS 3.0. The program also operates on PC-jr's with
sufficient memory.

5. Kudos
"Let me be among the first to congratulate you on the release of
the much-awaited YAM - your features of terminal review (for
those looking on: scroll up/down by line or page, do string
searches, search next, kill buffer, kill to end of buffer...)
will set the industry on end, I think - at least from what I've
seen of Xtalk ..."
-Ward Christensen
Author of "Community Bulletin Board System (CBBS)" and
designer of the popular MODEM file transfer protocol.
"Just received copy of Pro-YAM from (snail-like) ups & I AM
IMPRESSED! ... the impression I get from the manual & what I
have tried is of a very powerful & well-planned program.. note
to eavesdroppers: anybody who doesn't shell out for a copy of
this program immediately is nuts.. --skip"
Skip Gilbrech
"YAM is my primary tool for communication, and more. I use it
every day for a variety of tasks and about once a week something
comes up that only YAM can do."
