The forested areas of central Germany were some the most important areas of glass production in the Middle Ages and at the beginning of the modern times. The glassblowers of the region formed a large trade guild, the centre of which was near the town of Mainz in Spessart during the 15th century and later on in Hesse. Glassmaking spread further from there to northern Germany and as far as Denmark and Sweden. The glass production of Spessart was very much curtailed during the Thirty YearsΓÇÖ War because Swedish troops invaded the area in 1631 and destroyed all glassworks. Forest glass was produced in central Germany, and it was mostly simple, green utilitarian glass.
