The earliest glasses recovered in Tartu are Venetian enamelled beakers. The fragments are from at least 11 different vessels, which is more than has been discovered anywhere else. Only few European towns can boast as exquisite and abundant 14th-century glass finds as Tartu. Late medieval glasses have also been found in the town, and objects made of colourless glass in Bohemia or northern Germany (including Stangengläser and beakers with applied threads) were in particularly abundant use. Glassware from the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century has very rarely been discovered in Tartu, which in those days had ended up as the battleground of lengthy wars.
