Shards of an early vessel, decorated with glass trails and probably dating from the 13th century, have been found in Roskilde, but finds from the later Middle Ages are rare, as they are also in western parts of Denmark. Further east on the coasts of the Sound and, for instance, in Lund glasses were used more commonly. The use of glass in Denmark increased considerably when the first glassworks were founded in the country in the middle of the 16th century. There is plenty of glass finds from Roskilde dating from the end of the 16th century and the 17th century, some of them from the ruins of a tavern situated right beside the Cathedral.
