Almost two hectares of medieval Tartu has been studied in archaeological excavations. Specified finds from this area amount to approximately 100 000. The cultural layer where the town is situated is some three metres thick. Remains of wooden and brick buildings, as well as refuse heaps, have been discovered under the soil. Especially the refuse heaps have been interesting finding sites because many vessels, including medieval glass beakers, have been preserved in them. If the finds had been in soil of another kind, especially the glass would probably have been destroyed in the course of time.
