Several fairly extensive archaeological excavations have been conducted in the area of medieval Turku. In 1995 a large area was excavated in the so called Convent Quarter, situated approximately 250 metres downstream from the Turku Cathedral. The excavations revealed a part of a quarter which, in the Middle Ages, had included several stone buildings and cobbled streets. The masonry houses were built latest during the first half of the 15th century, and already at that time remains of earlier occupation and cultural layers at the site were destroyed. The cellars and stone buildings were well-preserved, and the Aboa Vetus museum was built around them. In the excavations also a considerable amount of stray finds were recovered, dating from the turn of the 14th century to the 19th century.
